Are they effective? Is it really worth it to invest in laptop or netbook coolers? How can I prevent my laptop from heating up too much other than getting a cooler?

i have hp compaq laptop brands, laptop is very hot during use fast, I want to ask if there is a good cooler for this laptop. I've been using a fan cooler under the laptop. even if it's too hot I added a fan to cool.

Do laptop coolers make a difference? Or is it ok if i don;t buy one. Plus, if i buy one, should i buy the pricey one or just a cheap/generic cooler? What can you suggest?
