If your cupboards vanished today, which 3 shelf-stable items would you replace first? For me, it would be olive oil, dried pasta, and black pepper. (And I always have Parmesan in the fridge)

So, as posted previously I have been almost buried in a mountain of cherry tomatoes. This years bumper crop has meant that we have been eating them til they have been coming out of our ears ….and still have loads left.
On Monday I...

When I was a baby my mother used olive oil and cornstarch on me.
I used the same on my children because it is edible. If a baby puts a hand on the oil and then in the mouth, or on the cornstarch, it's okay. It's food.
Not so...

Gosh, I am not liking the taking of my morning dose of olive oil and nighttime dose of apple cider vinegar. The vinegar I am taking right now is old and very strong. It takes all I can muster to get it down. But, I am seeing...

New Year's Eve was nice. I napped soon after dinner until about 10:30. then I woke up and watched the one-hour Rod Stewart special. Some good oldies I enjoyed and he was energetic and still sounds good. I turned on NBC just in...

This is a natural oil extracted from the fruit of an olive tree. It has 14% saturated fat, 11% polyunsaturated fat such as omega-3 and 6 fatty acids. But 73% is monounsaturated fat or oleic acid. This acid, studies suggest,...

Have you ever tried using olive oil in baking?
I used it in salads and cooking too but never tried it in baking.
Olive oil has a certain distinct smell and taste that differentiate it from other oil.
I usually...

Vince finished his working life as a bursar/business manager in a school. A bursar friend retired about the same time Vince did and bought a few acres in Ferguson Valley, Western Australia, not too far from where we lived.
He and...

As many of you know I love hearts of palm. They can be used in any salad in which one might have been tempted to use artichoke hearts. But their color and texture make them unique.
I recently had an afternoon snack consisting...

Here are some healthy do's and don'ts to think about.
DON'T buy olive oil in clear glass. The light degrades the heart-healthy oil.
DO smell yourself 30 pounds lighter. People who smelled green apple, banana or peppermint...

Do you ever just buy something that you don't need, just because? Well, I was referred by a co-worker to this local specialty olive oil (and balsamic vinegar) shop that has a crazy variety of "infused" olive oils and balsamic...

I just got back from a long but enjoyable day at my friend's preschool. I got some extra hugs because I worked part of the day in a classroom I hadn't visited in a couple of weeks.
I scored some wine on the way home but was too...

They say "necessity is the mother of invention," and I believe I experienced that the other night.
My cupboard was almost bare, but I spied some pasta, some olive oil, some fresh garlic cloves, and (in the fridge) some grated...

It is my own fault.
You may or may not know I make infused oils to be used in salves and such. I had some on the counter, behind my bread machine.
I went to the kitchen to get started, and found I had turned over my calendula in...

I seem to go in cycles when it comes to food. I'll become "addicted" to something, buy it every time I go shopping, and then get tired of it after a couple of months.
Such is the case with Trader Joe's Mandarin Orange Chicken....

I was thinking about my younger days this morning and remembering that I always made myself an afternoon snack when I got home from school. This was in Chicago, so it would have been my 4th through 12th grade years. My default...

I had a strange night last night (see my previous post). But I got back to sleep and woke up at about 9 AM.
At about 10 AM, I put together my new "staple" breakfast, and it was absolutely delicious!
I fried two eggs on low heat...

As some of you know, I tend to graze for breakfast, and that means that lunch is important to me. I spent the morning writing progress notes for my work with the "troubled " kids, and all I had to eat was some lox, some cheese and...
