Did the "one that got away" ever truly get away?

Every one in life has the story of the guy/gal that they foolishly let slip away, that's all a part of life and love. What I wonder about constantly though is whether or not that saying is actually a hundred percent accurate....

It's sort of a cliche phrase, you've probably heard it. It typically applies to that one person from your past that you'll always love even though you are no longer together and have probably moved on. Or something like that....
