First of all I don't believe any superstitions, but I do think some of them are interesting. I hear that Americans have some superstitions that are quite interesting.According to one American superstition,if you have a cough that won't go away, then you should take a piece of your hair and put it between two slices of buttered bread, then feed this hair sandwich to a dog and say,"eat well, you hound, may you be sick and I be sound."And there is another one,During a wedding ,brides must wear or carry"something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue".I got to know this when I was watching Friends, but didn't understand that at that time.If you are an American, tell me is is true that about the two superstitions I wrote above? Well,in China, the number two is very important,we consider two is a lucky number,"Good things come in twos" Oh,eight and six are also lucky numbers .Some business people pay large money to get their phone number contains six or eight. They think eight and six can bring fortune. My friends,do you mind sharing some superstitions of you contry?

I don't believe in them. Most of them are funny though. The ones you listed above I have never heard of, but they are quite hilarious. Where did you hear the cough one from?

For chinese, 4 is an unlucky number and for some, 13 is also a bad number too.. hehe ^_^ Other than that, because in my country, we will hang our laundry on bamboo poles, and hang it on the outside to dry, so our superstitious will be not to walk under those laundries as ple will hang all their bras and panties on the bamboo poles.. LOL

I am an American and have never heard of taking your hair and putting it between two slices of bread. Not sure I would feed that to my dog*L* The bride one is true. It is supposed to bring them luck and happiness. We have a lot of superstitions such as don't walk under a ladder, it is bad luck if a black cat crosses your path and see a penny pick it up all day long you'll have good luck. I think these have been passed down from generation to generation so we just keep going by them. I am not one that is big on them but hey then again I don't really test them all that often and anything that brings me good luck is a good thing right?

I sometimes believe if its easy to do. Some superstitions i know is it's bad to give handkerchief/towel and socks. If you really have to give this kind of stuff, you must ask a coin in return to serve as payment. For lovers, it's bad to give religious items. It's also bad to have three persons in a photo. And i think this is common, on friday the 13th, you should wear red. these are some supertitions i know.

Sometimes following superstitions can prevent dangerous situations. For example, walking under a ladder can cause all kinds of accidents. It's much better to walk around it. What about an open umbrella indoors? Yes, it's just a superstition, but it is safer to open it outside. A broken mirror probably doesn't cause 7 years bad luck, but you might cut your hand on the glass. I don't believe in superstitions per se...I love black cats and have had two of my own, but I think that some superstitions can contain practical advice.

i have never heard of the dog one. The wedding is not a superstition, i don't believe. It is a tradition. It is true tho that we have many weird ones such as breaking a mirror will bring 7 years bad luck. walking under a ladder is bad luck. Openening an umbrella is bad luck. And a new one that the young people started is that white lighters are evil. In our store, they just don't sell well at all because of that silly belief.

When I was a child, I read a few books about superstitions around the world! It was very interesting and a subject that our teachers had us discuss. Most of us did not believe in the superstitions but tried to understand where they originated and why! I have never heard of the hair sandwich, although I wonder where that came from, it does sound biblical to me! (Something about how demons could be transferred to pigs so the human would be free again!) I have heard about lucky numbers, I think seven is a lucky number. I know about the superstitions since I read the book, "Superstitious? Here's why!" Here is a fun link with the most superstitions ever found on the internet! http://www.oldsuperstitions.com/

Yeah,I also don't believe it.But sometimes it's really an interesting thing and we would do it and not think that it's superstition. But I think the believe in once mind is important.Without belief no one can have a good and happy life.

I am a chinese, and there are a lot of sayings about superstitions. Once birds' dejecta happened to drop to a man's head, he must to beg a bowl of rice from his neighor and eat it. They said the dejecta from the sky could bring your doom. That is easy to understand: no one want to find the dejecta on his head. But i still don't know why they have to beg a bowl of rice.

I didn't know of these superstitions earlier. Thanks gxnfly for the information!!I am from India and we too like other countries have superstitions and I feel most of them would be common to every country.we consider it bad luck if a black cat crosses the path and good luck if a black dog crosses the path and if a dog cries its considered to be a bad omen.we believe that if you're going out to do something good or are going to appear for your examinations eating curd will bring you luck and bad luck if anybody sneezes while you're about to start it.

I believe superstitions are things people make up to help solve a problem they can't describe. For example, saying the play: "Macbeth" by Shakespeare is definitely a bad thing, since that particular play has brought much ill-fortune to the actors in it.

I used to be so superstitious it was silly! I gradually got out of it as the years passed but I still honor some superstitions. Like I will not walk under a ladder as that is supposed to be bad luck, the other is a saying about a magpie, one magpie seen by two, brings good luck to both of you. If you are alone when you see one then you have to salute it and say good morning or good afternoon mr magpie!

Well, I have heard the superstition about the wedding things, but not the one about the buttered bread thing. People have lots of supersitions, I'll give you a few such as: don't walk under a letter it's bad luck, if a black cat runs in front of your car you should make a big finger X on your windshield, if you see a penny on the ground you should pick it up for good luck, but if it has tails don't pickup its bad luck. These are a few I can think of, but there I know are lots more.

In Indonesia, superstitions is very common. such as, girl may not sit before a door. we can't cut off our nails at midnite cuz they say we want our paretns die. also, we should not whistle at the night. we must sweep floor cleanly, in order to get a good husband, we have to spend our meals tidily. In some isolated places, we should never refuse the food offered by society there. But i think some superstitions are ethics, just a norm that we should pay attention to.
