Okay I am a member at a few various sites that pay me for emails etc etc. I signed up awhile back for a free 3 day 2 night Vegas contest I think. No credit card number etc. just address name and phone number. I noticed my phone bill was a lot higher and a new company for long distance was listed. USBI was the name. Also known as Voicenet company. Anyhow I did not read the very fine print when I signed to win that trip and signed up for 3 months of this long distance service. Anyhow they allowed me to cancel early but am still liable for the past months bill. So be careful out there I know I will from now on.

Ouch, what a hard lesson to learn, sorry to hear you had gotten a bad deal here..This is why I am very cautious of what I sign up for and who gets information about me..
And thanks for the warning, I know that people like you have saved me before when I didn't know..I hope this helps someone here...

Wow, I was going to say that 416 is a lot...
Good thing it was only 16, enough to get your attention to correct it before it got any higher..

This is part of why I do very few of those free offers anymore. I may not read the fine print as well as I should, and get stuck.

Wow I didn't think they could do that without having a voice authorization. I know a long time back I used a long distance service other then AT&T and they told me they had to have my voice authorization in order to switch it over. You might call your own long distance carrier and ask them what the ruling is on that. If it hasn't changed then you won't owe a huge bill. Best of luck to you on that one. I will watch better from now on.

Hi GRANDPA BOB! Thanks for the warning. I have learned my lesson on that before and I did learn the hard way. Fine prints are supposed to be read because that is where the twist on the contract is. More blessings to you and take care always. Happy mylotting!

Yup, i did the same thing for a $500.00 Target gift card (which by the way, you never get) and ended up with USBI. my phone company sent the bill back to them as refused, and of course i had to cancel "my account" with USBI. so now i never fill out anything asking for my phone #. if it's i'm really interested in checking out, i put 000-000-0000 as my phone #...it usually let's you continue. Here's 3 pieces of advice i can give my fellow MyLotians:
1)If you don't know the company, DON'T give out your phone number.
2)If you get an e-mail telling you for your opinion, you'll get "A dream vacation", "A 500.00 gift card", "A Red Lobster dinner", or many, many similar offers...and "your opinion" turns out to be just checking off page after page of boxes to different offers, don't waste your time, just close the E-mail...this is where these strange phone bills come from.
3)Download "McAfee SiteAdvisor" it's a little green box that sits on your browser window, but when you go to these questionable sites it warns you by turning red.
Just remember people...there really is "No Free Lunch"

Because of those fine prints, I am always careful for what I sign up for. We have been hit like that before.

Yeah, you gotta read those terms all the way through on some of those offers on those sites. That's one reason why I don't like to do some of those offers. I'm glad, though, that they let you cancel early, but it's too bad that you have to pay the first month.

yes you always have to read the fine print of everything and make sure you are no being swindled, this is rampant in online and telemarketing pitches.

I had this happen to me twice in 5 months and still don't know where the voicemailplus came from. All I know is suddenly it showed up on my phone bill even thou I had no idea I signed up for it and had no need for it. Now I'm going to be super careful on what I sign up for cause never know when it's gonna pop up on me again somewhere and I fall for it yet again.

I actually did a discussion about something similar and how important it is to read that fine print or those terms & conditions. I have no idea which website it was as I hunt around quite a lot and it was one of those things where you fill out a form including one's phone number...next thing you know I'm getting these strange charges on my phone bill that I know I didn't do, including a collect call long distance to Calif...like huh? Yes I do have one friend there but this was a different phone number from hers and like why would I make a collect call when I have long distance charges already included with my phone bill??...So naturally I contacted my phone company and explained things..it took awhile but eventually the phone company reimbursed me for these charges that I DIDN'T make--to the tune of over $100 at that
Are you sure you can't get reimbursed as well? My phone company is verizon

Thats why sometimes I am not real keen to sign up any free offers. We had to read the term ( very long woth small smaal letters) before we press sign up. After reading your experience, i had to be extra careful now in signing up anyy offers. Thx grandpa Bob.

I have done similar things, so this is a very good warning post to all of us who try this offer or that offer. There is one site that wants to give you coupons, but you get switched on your phone company as well. We need to all be careful. That fine print can be expensive.

There are a lot of crappy, sneaky sites like that. I am very wary of them. One has to read the fine print. But even that is not good enough sometimes.
We had a mysterious phone call this morning. They hung up as soon as the answering service cut in. I bet it was one of those sites that request my phone number on the sign up process.

I noticed recently that my phone bill was alot higher also but I do not recall the name of the compnay that was making charges to it. I had to pay 3 months worth of this service but I did get it cancelled and got reimbursed for it too. The same thing happened on my credit card also so I got new credit cards.
