Pizza Delivery

GrandpaBob gets credit for me starting this discussion. Do you order pizza for delivery? When they deliver the pizza to your door, do you tip? How much do you tip? I usually tip a couple of dollars. I don't believe they should get the same amount wait staff get in a restaurant, do you? I noticed recently, though, because of the rise in gas prices that a delivery charge has been added to the bill. If the delivery person is driving their own car I assume this money goes to them to pay for their gas. If not, then it goes to the restaurant. Ordering pizza for delivery is incredibly convenient but I think twice about doing it now with the added charge. I still tip the delivery person though. What about you? Do you order pizza for delivery? Are you charged for it? Do you tip the delivery person, and if so how much?

Tipping the pizza dude only helps them make more money. BUT they get paid SO MUCH usually for delivering! did you ever notice if you order for example 4 Large cheese pizza's its one price to pick it up yourself? and MORE to have it delivered?? usually its like $3 to $4 more to have it delivered instead of picking it up yourself! This is because the pizza delivery person keeps that money as their delivery fee/tip. Tipping over and above that is just double dipping.. but they wont complain! ** BUT BE SURE and notice... SOMETIMES the delivered price is the same as the price you pay if you pick it up! THAT is the only time you TIP!

Thanks for pointing that out. I didn't know that. What I have noticed is at 2 for 1 Pizza you are supposed to be getting two pizzas for the prize of one, but I ordered only one recently (which I rarely do) and it was half the price. I've got a real beef with their name now.

There is a higher delivery charge at the pizza places we order from. We have always given the driver at least $3.00. I don't think we have ever given less than that. We have to pick up our pizza when we order it now because even though we only live 15 minutes away, they don't deliver anymore because of the gas prices. It's not that much a big deal though to go pick it up. If they ever start delivering again, they can always expect at LEAST a $3.00 tip.

That's new... a pizza place that doesn't deliver. Pizza without delivery is like fish and chips places being closed on Good Friday. They just seem to go together. I know it's a business decision but I guess I just figured that's what pizza was all about, having it delivered. Thanks for responding.

Yeah it is kind of a bummer. Those were the only two places that delivered anyway before they stopped. The one is Dominos and that one is a small one that also doesn't open until 4 in the afternoon because they are in a small town and they don't make much. Oh well, I like Pizza Hut best and they never delivered to us since we live out of their range, so it gives us an excuse to get that pizza and pick it up. LOL

Nobody delivers out here. We're 25 or more miles from the nearest pizza place, so we usually make it at home. When we lived on base, Pizza Hut did deliver, and we usually tipped $3+ the change. Our pizza was always hot and quick, because they knew we were good tippers. The closest to delivery we do now, is when we order Chinese food, and then meet the delivery guy at the gate on base. We're 20 miles in the opposite direction of where most food places are. Sometimes when we are going to be on base anyway, shopping or whatever, we order Chinese so that we can meet them as we are getting ready to leave. We usually tip them $3 or 4 + the change, too.

Usually we give tips but of course we only give tips like the few extra change (coins etc.) IF there are no coins we usually give a P20 bill and that's the highest tip I've ever given to a pizza delivery person. However if the delivery has a service charge then I don't give tips anymore.

I dont order pizza since i prefer home made pizza. Aside from the fact that you save money. You can also choose the flavor and you are sure that the ingredients are all fresh and good for your health.

I do love papa john's pizza, but order pizza for delivery is nightmare for me, I placed an order on 5 pm, and they came to my place at 6:30!! I dun know wathek were they doing.....I ended up by order online and take away now....For the tip, I think 10%-15% would be fairly enough.

Sheesh my name brought up again in a discussion. Hahaha! Gotta love it though I guess. I have also noticed they've added a delivery charge. I do tip the delivery people for pizzas etc as well. They do put a lot of wear and tear on their vehicles doing this job. I feel that any service rendered to us should be tipped somewhat. We usually tip at least $3 on one pizza delivered. But lately we've been getting the take and bake pizzas more often. Or we order then pick up the pizzas. But a tip is stil;l given then as well if allowed. HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB !!~

Gotta give credit where credit is due. I wouldn't want people thinking I copied their idea. I've seen someone do it with one of my discussions and was like I just did some math. If my pizza is $25 with delivery charge, a 15% tip would be $3.75 (which I would round up to $4). Do you think they deserve the same size tip as wait persons?

Yes we do order Pizza for delivery and there is a $2 delivery charged to the bill. I always tip the driver, usually between $2-$4, depending on how much the bill is. We don't order out as much anymore, but when we do, it's usually Pizza.

When we have the occasional poker night (8 people once every 4-6 mths) our order is usually over $30 so that's another reason why we tip a little more.

You guys are awsome. I use to be a pizza delivery boy and it is amazing how maney people would not tip. Even when it was raining or snowing and cold outside. But there were people out there that tipped a little bit more then I was use to seeing.

No, because I like my pizza without the tomato sauce its hard to find a pizza that way unless you either buy a kind that doesn't have tomatos, like the "green" pizza at Cici's or you special order one.

I try to tip pizza delivery people $5-$6 dollars because I use to know a few people in the past who use to delivery pizza for a living and they told me they made the bulk of their income from tips ( just like a waitress or waiter do in restaurant) and pizza delivery people use their own personal car to make the delivery's with, and driving all those mile's delivering pizza's daily really does put ware on a person's car. So that's why I give them a good tip.

Maybe it's just me because of this so-called 2-for-1 Pizza that seems more expensive than it ought to, I'm reluctant to tip now that they've added a service charge. Don't you think the service charge goes to the delivery person?

We rarely order pizza to be delivered anymore. That is because we have become spoiled with my semi-homemade pizzas. Now, when we order pizza out, it looks like it has almost no meat on it. In fact, the place we get delivery from when we do order (3 or 4 times a year) has delivered pizzas to us and forgotten to put the meat on the pizza 3 times in a row! My husband says he'd just rather I make them. I must say, when you are waiting and starved and a pizza arrives you paid $20+ for, you want it to have on it what you ordered! The pizza place we order from is privately owned and does not charge for deliver. Yes, we do tip, usually $3. The pizza restaurant is actually only about a half-mile from our house.

Only once have we had an order messed up. They forgot one of the meats we ordered. So they sent another pizza out to us, and we got to keep the first one. In that case we definitely got a free pizza, and I sure as heck wasn't tipping the delivery guy for making a second trip even though it wasn't his fault.

They said we were to return the original pizza even though we had started eating it before we realized the bacon was missing. In the end, the delivery guy just looked at the first pizza but told us we could keep it.

Wow, that's great customer service! I don't think ours would ever do that. They are always gone before we even know what is or is not on it!

We've stopped having it delivered here. Since we are only about two miles away we just drive and pick it up. With the added cost to deliver, then a tip on top - not to mention the increase in their prices. It was just too high to have it delivered. We ate at Pizza Hut the other night and both had personal pan pizzas with a glass of ice tea. And yet our bill (with tip) was over 15.00. And thats for those personal pan pizzas. If we split a medium or get breadsticks we can't seem to get out for less than 20 bucks anymore. Eating out anywhere is getting really expensive these days.

I agree eating out is getting pretty expensive. I do find that East Side Mario's has really reasonable prices but have never tried their pizza. I should though. Our Pizza Hut shut down.

Hi patgalca Yes we do order pizza every now and again abd yes I usually give a $2 tip but since they have added a delivrey charge to the bill I have been very hestiant about tipping mainly because if you really set and think about it the reason we were tipping is knowing they were using there gas so we want to make it right but now that that charge is added they are getting paid for the gas they use but I still tip them anyways sometime I wish I didnt because lets face it in todays economy $2 adds up

I don't know. I thought we just ought to tip people who provide a service, especially the minimumly paid people that do the actual serving. We have a restaurant here called Taco Time. It's kind of like Taco Bell but better... freshly made product right in front of you like a sub place. There is an eating area but you go to the counter, place your order at one end, pay and receive your order at the other end. On the counter in front of the cash register is a tip jar. Don't you just wonder....

I see what you mean on the taco place you are already paying for the meal that you have to stand in line to get you have to refill your own drinks and yet they still ask for a tip people are out to get paid whatever way they can weather its wrong or not

here in the philippines, it is very convenient to have the pizza delivered because of the traffic. our favorite local pizza is greenwich, i love its hawaian pizza and as far as my tongue knows, it has the most delectable cheese in town, am hungry now lol. last week, when my cousins and aunt visited in the house, my aunt's younger sister order for 2 pieces of pizza, one was motzarella and the other was over loaded, that came with free softdrinks and 3 lasagnas, we all enjoyed. but we did not give some tips to the delivery boy, if i had paid it, i could have given, i am generous when it comes to giving tips hehe, the delivery charge was already included in the order. unsatisfied, we ordered again lol..i remember last time when i was in charge of paying, i tipped him almost a hundred peso or more than a dollar, it was my first payday, and it was a yuletide season..

Yes, if it was the holiday season I think a tip would definitely be in order, just as I suggested in my discussion about newspaper carriers. Thanks for responding.

There has been a $2.00 delivery charge for many years in this area. I don't order pizzas, as its a short walk from my house. I don't see any reason to pay $2.00 for them driving a couple of blocks. Gas is high, but not that high! The local place has been offering a low cost pizza for carry out. I can't see any reason to pay twice the price to have it delivered vs carry out.

I would love to order pizza for delivery but we live in the country and they do not deliver way out here. We have to call it in and go pick it up.

My husband sometimes insists on picking it up even though we live in town. Now that we have to pay for delivery, I am thinking more and more about picking it up. If hubby is home, I'll send him. I probably wouldn't go pick it up myself. If I'm ordering it's because I'm lazy. LOL!

My husband and 2 of my boys deliver pizzas. I can tell you about the restaurant they work for that the delivery charge is $1.50 and 75cents goes to the driver and the other goes to the restaruant. I think that getting pizza delivered is such a convience that I don't mind paying the extra charge and yes, I always tip the driver. To be honest, alot of people don't. There are many times that my husband will deliver a pizza and the people ask for their change back~ it could be 10 cents and they want it back! Others are very generous tippers. I always tip $2 + the change to round up my order. So just remember....delivery pizza guys are paying more for their gas to get you your pizza, so give them a little something.

my sister often orders pizza. here in my place tipping is not customary. the charge is usually included in the bill as service charge and govt tax. some provide free delivery and some charge a small amount for delivery. so all we need to pay is what's written in the receipt. but sometimes my sister tell the delivery guy to keep the change if it is small

Well since my first job as a teenager was pizza delivery I always tip them. I used to tip $5.00 but now with the delivery charge I usually tip $3.00 Especially if they are using their own car like I did! But even if they are using the company car they have to put gas in it.Or at least you did back in 198? never mind! LOL

Excellent question! Yes, delivery people should get tipped. Many are working for tips only, some get a very small hourly wage too. Don't assume that a tacked on delivery charge is given to the drivers. Some restaurants are adding it to offset rising food costs, instead of raising menu prices. Ask your delivery person. That's your best source for information. I've upped my tip from $2.00 to $3.00. If I can't afford that, then I go pick up the pizza myself.
