Lost nuts/seeds

Starving? - This squirrel went nuts looking for dropped bird seeds under the feeder.

Well with all the snow etc here as of late the critters seldom show up. Well except for the ever hardy gray squirrels. They love stealing the finches feed from their feeder. It has been too cold to mess with cleaning and filling it so it has been empty for a few days. Well this squirrel knew there had to be some lost seeds etc under all that snow. I watched him dig the area up then finally got my camera to get a shot of him in the snow munching on left over/dropped seeds from the feeder. This Saturday I am getting another big bag of seed for the birds. Well, for the squirrels as well I reckon as they are creative, ingenious thieves afterall. Do you feed the birds in the winter even though you know squirrels will get most ther seeds in the long run? HAPPY HOLIDAYS FROM GRANDPA BOB !!~

The house behind me feeds the birds all year round. I only feed the hummingbirds. The lady that used to live next door to us used to get pecans from a friend of hers and put them out for the squirrels. The squirrels are always getting something out of our yard to eat but not sure what.

Mom had a feeder for hummingbirds up at the farm when she was alive. I do not know if theirs any near me with the busy road etc I live on. I haven't asked neighbors etc about it. But I would love to see some in my yard etc. None of the red flowers I grow attract them so I doubt theirs any near me really. HAPPY HOLIDAYS FROM GRANDPA BOB !!~

There is one house between me and a busy street and at one time we lived on a really busy highway in the country and I have never had as many hummingbirds as I did there. Maybe put a feeder up next spring and just see if you get in to come in.

Hi grandpa Bob... Yes I feed the birds knowing that the squirrel and chippys will be eating it too! We have a chipmunk that we call "Hoover Chippy"...cuz he vacuums up the seed so fast.... I've been putting a separate bowl of feed under the steps for him...haven't seen him lately...probably too cold..but the squirrels have been running up and down the fence line..

We have Chippys in Ireland. It is where we get Fish and chips from. I was in Canada a few years ago and was amazed by the little chipmonks everywhere. They are so cute.

When I lived up northw where it snowed. I did feed the birds every winter...summer to. I never had to worry about squirrels. I think because I had cats. So, no squirrels would dare come on my porch. But birds had no problem coming to the feeders. I know the bluebirds could be very aggressive and scare the rest of the birds away. So, did those awful squawky blackbirds.

The squirrels have gooten uused to my beagle, Buster, as he is used to them now. They only scamper away if I run outside screaming at the squirrels. They stare at me when I bang on the window as if to say, Yeah I see you, so what." HAPPY HOLIDAYS FROM GRANDPA BOB !!~

When I bother to fill the feeder, I put critter food in it because the cats like the squirrels better.

Noooo, all my cats are inside only, and back when I did have a few that went in and out, they knew if they brought them home I'd take them away so they didn't. I did once point out to my cat, The Doctor, a couple of mice and he dispatched them for me.

GB..I have a huge pecan tree in my backyard and let the birds and squirrels claim them for their food since I don't need them all... and you are right about them pesky squirrels..they will take anything for themselves

Well, we used to have Squirrels and birds that used to eat stuff we would leave for them, but then many of our neighbors in our Condos now own Cats so we see very few birds or squirrels looking for food around here anymore. I actually miss seeing them around here, as it was fun watching them sit on our Balcony and eat stuff we would leave out to feed them.

My sister has two hummingbirds living at her home in Seattle Washington. They have not migrated which I thought humming birds did. They are very hungry and so she feeds them all the time. The problem she is having is the nectar/sugar water freezes before they can drink it all. So she got a second feeder to keep in the house she she has one at room temp at all times so she can change them out.

We haven't gotten any snow yet. I throw crusts of bread out to the birds sometimes. My grandfather gave us a bird feeder one year. It didn't last too long. He feeds the birds and squirrels daily. It is on of his hobbies.

I wouldn't dare feed those little gray furry critters not after what they did to my house, I have a picture on my profile page where they chewed a hole in the side of my house that I had to have repaired and after they did that I vowed from now on they are on their own. If I can get a picture I will show you that your squirrel doesn't look like he is starving, he is fat compared to the squirrels I see in my back yard.

The first night we slept in this house we heard clawing sounds from the walls. The next morning I walked around finding a hole in the house near the roiof eave. I boarded that up and checked things out closely. No other damage done. And none since. But when we replaced some soffet wood two years aleter, we did find a full skeleton of a squirrel. Now they have not been eating/gnawing at my house at all. Mostly I think due to having Buster our beagle. This hole etc was prior to having Buster. Yeah this one is fed well as are others in my yard/neighborhood. I set an ear of my home grown sweetcorn out recently for them. HAPPY HOLIDAYS FROM GRANDPA BOB !!~

The squirels are crafty. We have them here but they never really come into the garden. Thats a great photograph of the squirel looking for the lost nuts. They are very smart. I always leave nuts out for the birds. I have a little Robin living in my garden. I bought him fat bells last week. They are full of fatty seed things and he loves them. During the spring it nested in my barbaque and it had three little baby robins.

I don't feed the birds. I would love to eventually get a bird feeder. I mean we have some beautiful birds around here and I would love to put a bird feeder up. I am just not sure what kind of feeder to get. I would love to see all the birds that we have around here.

I don't feed the birds in my garden as it's small and regularly occupied by my cat who even at 18 is a notorious hunter! Willow tends to frighten them off too. I do feed them at my employers though. He even has me making bird cake for them. He buys bird seed from the pet shop and keeps various packets of nuts which I chop up and has me melt suet to hold it all together. Some goes into a yogurt carton which hangs upside down from one bird table, some goes into a feeder that only the little birds can reach and the rest on the table. He can't get out much so it's great for him watching the birds, they regularly visit and this year a Robin has taken up residence in the hazel tree. We have quite mild but wet winters here in NW England and the birds are always happy for the helping hand. We don't have many squirrels in town but for several weeks he had me putting out cat food for the hedgehog that came nightly. I'm not a lover of the grey squirrel, they are responsible for the decline of our smaller native red squirrel which even in the Lake District it's a rare sight to see. However I wouldn't begrudge them a meal!

How lovely to have squirrels! We have blue-tongue lizards instead - they've just come out of hibernation and love to sun themselves on the warm paving stones next to the pond. They actually live underneath the pond, and slide back underneath when the sun goes in. We also have lots of kookaburras, which sit on the fence and laugh. It would certainly be hard feeding all your native animals in the snow!
