Hi! Friends, do you alone or you and your partner or you along with your siblings/your parents go regularly to the market to buy vegetables and fruits. If it is so, do you go on daily basis or weekly basis or you buy the vegetables and fruits randomly or as and when required? If you do not buy vegetables and fruits etc. yourself, do you remain aware about the rates of seasonal and non-seasonal vegetables. Do you remain interested in keeping yourself abreast with the prices of vegetables and fruits available in the market? I believe that those who are regular at the market always know the prevailing rates. Please share your funny and interesting experiences, when you go to the market to buy vegetables and fruits. A VERY VERY HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL OF YOU!

Hi deepak, Since me and my hubby both are working, we do weekly purchase from supermarket.......I don't care about prices.....lol, but my hubby will first see the price and then make decision to buy, which irritates me a bit, but I keep quiet because I know he is right. But that does not mean he is always right....he just keeps eye on things that I choose and most of the time makes faces so I don't buy and then we fight .....Out of 100, at least 90 times we end up shopping in fighting....lol, yet next week we are again ready to go to super market together........how stupid na

Hi Dpk....I do not go to the market to but vegetables though it is a bit cheaper than what we get in other retail shops because our market is situated in a crowded and congested part and getting a car parking space in its close visinity is an impossible task.Infact only people with two wheelers can shop comfortably there and since we dont have one, that option is also ruled out.. So since I drive my own car,and am a house wife,I do all the shopping myself and buy vegetables and other things in shopping malls near my place where there is sufficient parking place ,since I have to carry all the things myself to the car............And when it comes to vegetables and fruits I do not care much about the price and buy good and fresh ones only. But I do keep an eye on the prices and if some off season veggies or fruits are priced highly,I avoid buying them, since they will be available cheaply when in season.....

HI! Dear! I can understand your point that it is not possible to visit a crowded marked, where there is no parking space available. Now a days, in New Delhi, too many shopping malls and outlets have opened, where one can buy fresh vegetables and fruits, besides buying other products. We also go to such outlets, but we buy only when the quality is good, prices do not matter much. However, sometimes, we do not get the desired quality at such outlets, even after paying the price. You say that you do not bother about prices, but do you keep a tab, what is the trend, or you simply spend the money and come back home with a loaded bag? Please, Be brave to buy non-seasonal vegetables, even if they are priced higher, to enjoy a Carrot or Peas in summer season, is treat in itself. To cook ladyfinger in chilly winter is another fun experience, because normally good quality ladyfingers are available in summer season, specially in Delhi. Many thanks for sharing. Have a great and fun filled New Year! Deepak

Hi Dpk.....well I dont buy things blindly and just fill my bag,but I just turn a blind eye to the price if the vegetables are fresh and of good quality........And since we dont have winter here we get fresh veggies and fruits most of the time.it is only when it rains that I am very careful while buying, because the vegetables tend to get soaked and spoilt easily while being transported......But sometimes due to some lorry strike or soemthing they tend to raise the price of vegetables exhorbitantly and then I buy less and wait for the price to go down......

Hahaha.....you caught me there Deepak! I hardly go shopping for groceries and vegetables. My mom does that and I do not like much to go around looking and choosing for vegetables and fruits. It's only when my parents are not around, I have to. On those occasions I enjoy it. Nothing like buying fresh green vegetables and cooking it fresh, The taste increases manifold! And I agree, those who go to market regularly, they have to and as in my mom's case, she really enjoys buying stuffs and keeps talking about the rising prices. I think, since I am not into it I am not that interested but once I get into it, I would love it as well. Happy new year to you also...

You just gave me clue to start this discussion.........ha! ha! ha! and I converted your clue in a post.........LOL! It is your mother, who does all the shopping for vegetable, that is why you do not bother much about the vegetables and its prices, because you get it, without visitng the market. By the way, how many times, in the recent times, have you gone to market to buy some vegetables, when your parents were not around and how much approxmimate total amount you spend on purchasing vegetables? I would suggest, try to visit the market along with your Mother to buy some vegetables and fruits, once in a blue moon, you will not only enjoy the experience but you will come to know about the latest trends of vegetables and its prices in the market. Many thanks for sharing. Have a great and fun filled New Year! Deepak

Really! So I inspired you to start a discussion! Great! Thanks Deepak. And next time, when I get time, may be on a Sunday, I will accompany my mother and tell you the detailed price rates. You can ask me questions and I am sure I will pass on it with star! lol.. My marketing expedition just covers a few minutes when I just pick and buy stuffs I need to buy, without asking for individual. Next time I must make sure to ask the rates. I must. Actually only the other day my brother told me that they had a MCQ asking about some price rate. He was talking about MAT!!

U know still we have persons coming in streets on donkey carts, with fresh vegetable. and what ever is required, family bought it daily fruits, i am in touch as most of times its me who buy them when coming back to office, so i am aware of them. nowa days, oranges, kino, banana, guava and apples are in my list take care

For me the vegetable market is on the way home so it is not at all troublesome to do my marketing in the evenings. On Sundays I take my kids to the market so they can have their choice of vegetables and fruits. But when my hubby was there I would never go to the market. That was his department altogether.

So you must be aware about the latest trend in the market and which are the vegetables are available from time to time. Taking kids along with you is also a good idea, at least it gives them a idea what kind of vegetables are available in the market, so they could choose themselves. Thanks for sharing.

Hello my friend dpk262006 Ji, Well, this is a job assigned to my hubby, but I do accompany him at Times, if i too have to buy at regular items of my need. But as we were always away from cities, we used to buy on weekly basis, and we will buy ourselves. my hubby is fond of going to vegetable/fruit markets alon, for the reasons known best to him. but i can understand liberty to choose, or if some one accomanies, it may be comulsion to buy out of his choice. Now-a-days, this job is done by DIL, who buys everything as per family needs and it goes on . life never comes to end. may god bless you and have a graet time.

Hello my friend dpk262006 Ji, My hubby is retired AF personnel and with Science background, so he does everything as if he is still doing some experiments, plans very well, what has to be done in shopping under different heads, he would list them including Vegetables in quantity and type. We take different menu everyday and as such if we have to go to market every fortnight, that means at laest minimum 30 numbers fried subji and 15 numbers curry subji will be required under rotation basis considering whole family requirements and also requirements on fast days etc. So it is a hectic drama before starting, but mutually, we can always change, but he only will lead me, he will tell me to start one side see whole market compare rates and then make purchases. We enjoy shopping, as we will be out for quite sufficient time, he will make our Lunch on order by phone, who will not use onion/garlic in our meals, as we do not take. We enjoy, it has never been burden to us. may god bless you and have a graet time.

Hi Deepak, I go to the market alone to buy my fruits and veggies. Its only the fish that my hubby buys as I don’t like visiting the fish stalls. But I enjoy buying my own supplies, I love haggling with the vendors and feeling the items myself before deciding on what to buy. I buy them once a week on Saturdays when I have some free time and can enjoy the shopping. I usually like to look around a bit, check out the prices, the freshness of items and also while buying, I plan the menu for the coming week too. Its really a very de-stressing experience.

HI! Dear! You appear exactly like us, because we both also go to market on Saturdays to buy our weekly stock of vegetables. We also keep checking the quality, prices and freshness of the vegetables and love to buy any new vegetable, which we find over there. As now a days, winter season is here in Delhi, so you can get lots of green vegetables and carrot, peas, cauliflower, cabbage and turnip in abundance. As you visit the market to buy vegetables on regular basis, you must be knowing what are the current prices? What are the current price of potatoes, onions and peas in your area? Many thanks for sharing. Have a great and fun filled New Year! Deepak

Well you can say that my partner and I are amongst the lucky ones as we have a small organic farmlet and so grow our own fruit and vegetables. Well almost all of them but we still have to buy a few as our climate is nit suitable for a few things that we like. Yes we do know the prices or at least what we get paid for what we sell ourselves and what price we sell it to the locals, as distinct from those for the market or contracts. So you see my partner and I go go together msot of the time to get our fruit and vegetables .. from our own garden. During the season we will freeze and dehydrate some of ou fruit and vegetables so that we have them all year round and they are just as fresh as if we had picked them as we use them. Actually we do know the locals who buy directly from us and of course those who buy all the time get a little bonus when they purchase. It is our way of thanking them for their patronage and we know they will come back again if we look after them. With other things, what we buy locally whichever one of us is down the street where the shops ared will get it or I might pick up what we need when I am on my way home from a trip. With our major shopping trip is one that we do every couple of months and we do that together as it takes us several hours to go the the 4 different supermarkets.

Yes we are very lucky to have our own fruit and vegetables. We know that what we eat has been grown by us and that includes out of season because of what we can freeze and dehdrate. Some days, particularly when it is very hot, when we are tired because we have had several really busy days and don't feel like doing anything, we still carry on. Because it is only a temporary feeling and if we don't grow our own foods then we would have to buy it and would not know how it had been grown and what had been used on those foods. At least growing them organicaly we know that no chemicals, herbicides or pesticides have been used at all. Also our soil is well composted and full of earthworms to improve the quality of the soil.

Hi dpk, I am going myself for purchasing the vegetables and fruits. Actually when I return from office I am crossing through the market (from the bus stop to my home). Usually I am purchasing the necessary things on alternative days but it may varies on situation and since I am crossing the market everyday there is no tension to go to the market or finding out time etc. My hubby is ready to go to the market but usually I am refusing his service, you know why, then I have to make the list of necessary things and quantity of the same and his habit is buying the things in bulk quantity, even if I mentioned the quantity in list, he don't bother and sometime it will be a waste. So I am sending him only on unavoidable situations like continues holidays, younger son got ill etc. Passing through the market everyday I have an idea about the rate of the vegetables/fruits. What about you?

No Cupid, I am not smart in bargaining and you know we are regular customers and they will reduce the price by themselves without asking for a reduction. I never asked a reduction for vegetables because I felt that they are not rich and doing the business for survival. If the price is too high for a particular vegetable, definitely I ask, why the price is so high and they are explaining the reason very politely. But I know cunning people are also there, if I felt the same, I just avoid those people next time. What about you, are you going to the market with your wife?

I rarely as work is toxic, DIL goes often. But when I go, I haggle with almost anything I buy... When I first did the marketing , I just paid without question, but hubby taught me how to haggle and I was mortified to learn later that I could buy them for half the price they were offering me and it was fun haggling. But of course when I see that they need the money, I just pay and not make it difficult form them to sell. happy mylotting.

This is one job that is mone and mine alone. No one wants to do it. I do all the vegetable, fruit and grocery shopping myself, including buying fish, chicken and meat. I like shopping for vegetables and fruits and even other household stuff and have no complaints as such. I walk while going to the market because it is good excercise for me, so I go every other day to the market to buy the essentials , since i cant carry too much at a time.
