Baby Born two days after mother died...

Don't know how many myLotters have read or heard of this extraordinary story in the news - of the new born baby girl who was delivered from her mother who was declared 'brain dead' two days before after she collapsed following a brain haemorrhage of which the only signs she had was a headache... You can read about this story from various links online now but here's one of them http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/health/7824462.stm I feel really sorry for the family (dad especially who must've been in shock!) as they must be going through a difficult time with losing the mother so suddenly and also glad at the same time about the surviving baby... It is also remarkable that doctors were able to save this baby who was 2lbs at 25 weeks.. They managed to keep the mother's heart beating for 48 hours to deliver the baby on life support machines. Had you heard of the story? Did you read the story? What do you think of it? Remarkable, huh?

Yes I saw this story on the news this morning. It's pretty incredible and all credit to the doctors who managed to keep the mother alive until they could save the baby. The baby is now in intensive care I think.

I think that I had heard of something like this before where they kept the mother on life support long enough for the child to be born. It is incredible and something like this could not have been done years ago. So, instead of burying mother and child, at least the child could survive.

It is indeed incredible and it is good that at least one of them was saved and docs did all they could... Haven't heard something like this prior to this but another myLotter has also mentionned so

yes maina321, I also read the story. It is a both sad and happy thing for the family. However it is not amacing that our medical health system are so god that it actually could save the child? They have really made a different here. And I guess as a believer, God had something to do with it.

Yes, I think God had a hand in this... the fact that she was with someone when she collapsed, was got to hospital quick enough and the baby has been born, miracle really...

I hadn't heard that story, but it is indeed amazing! My fiance was also 3 months premature and he turned out fine. The only thing with him is that he is totally blind, due to retinopathy of prematurity, a condition that is caused by medical negligence. They left him in the incubator for too long, giving him too much oxygen and causing his blindness. Still, he is extremely lucky to have made it as is this young baby. I hope that he grows up happy and that his family tells him all about his mother. I hope he appreciates how lucky he is to be alive when he is older.

Cheers for sharing your fiance's story... it is a shame about the negligence of that team; I suppose it is really hard to know how well they're doing when they're so small... (I had two younger sisters born premature too) I do hope the little girl makes it ok, she'll still be her dad's miracle regardless

True, let's hope the baby survives the trauma of being born pre-mature and goes home to dad...

No, I am hearing it here from you! This is what I would call a miracle of science …the fact that the doctors tried everything they could and succeeded in the end to save the baby, must have been some relief to the distraught family. I do feel sorry for the dad…a total loss for him in money and life

Hi Marina, Yes the news was in today's newspaper. The credit goes to doctors but I felt bad about the baby and baby's father who lost the mother and wife. It is really an extraordinary story. The baby should live without the mother's care and it is really a sad thing. But she is lucky to get her life back by the efforts of doctors. Hope she will be happy with her father. Let us pray for her.

Yes; I read the story in today's issue of "The Hindustan Times" . It is amazing how doctors were able to do so . It is so unfortunate for the little baby and her father . They would have to go through such horrible times . Regards -Sweety_81

That is so sad! Birth is such a special time. It must have been very hard for the dad. But a blessing as well. Atleast he does have one of them. And it must have been hard for the family to witness and take part in as well. Sad, sad, sad.

Hi there marina321 I do think this story is amazing but at the same time very sad. I have heard the story over and over again on the news on my radio all day. They said that they even had to use an injection to help develop the babies lungs before she was born. I can't imagine the emotions the husband/father must be going through, happiness and elation over the birth of his baby but deep sadness at the loss of his wife.

Yes, they had to inject with steroids; think one of the links says mother... According to this link, she was buried last Friday, wonder who leaked the story then or if dad was given a few days to moan before letting the media in on it... http://www.guardian.co.uk/society/2009/jan/13/health-premature-birth

Thank God for the ability of these doctors to do such a thing. I had not heard of this story other than here on Mylot. Of course I don't find much time for television other than in the early mornings. This is such a sad thing for this father. He is surely having a hard time dealing with the loss of his wife. So sad she will not be here to see her child grow up.

Sure feel for the family so sad. They can do wonders now cant they. Had a neice that was born about this same time in the pergnacy and she also weighed about 2 pounds they said used hankys for diapers and held her in one hand. She now will soon be 55. So the baby can make it. and the more love she gets the better . Lets hope the dad has a lot of love to give to shower on the baby.

It is an incredible story for sure! I have heard of similar things in the past. Actually I have heard of women being kept alive for a long time to keep their unborn babies alive till they could be delivered safely. Two days is not that long. I am glad they saved the baby. As technology improves and doctors learn more the age of viability is getting lower and lower. Really is incredible!

I have heard of cases where the Mother was keep alive for several months to bring the baby to full term before delivery. At least in that case the family had time to make all the adjustments necessary for a new baby. What a blessing this is.

some similar stories are heard, but it is really tragic.it is really difficult for the family because no one can take the place of a mother spe. new born baby. to feed her, to care the baby,in a condition like this.i am also pregnant and delivery is near.
