this is seen as a good will gesture by canadians, for close to 10 years the ties with the us was weakened under Bush's administration, Bush broke the long standing tradition of making the first official presidential trip to a foreign country being canada. He ignored all the presidents before him, He went to Mexico instead. Obama is bringing it back and we Canadians are happy, http://www.thestar.com/News/World/article/568859 do you think this will be good for american/canadian relations? Do you think it won't make a difference in the grand scheme of things

Well, George W had a long standing friendship with President Fox so I can understand that he would go to Mexico. After all, the last visit he had as Govenor of Texas was from Fox.

I think that is great. That is a really good start. I'm not sure what the whole outcome will be but I bet it will be better than what Bush had for sure.

I wasn't aware of a strained relationship between US/Canada. I think it's excellent that Obama's making Canada his first stop. I tend to not think in terms of the big picture so I don't have an opinion. I do have an opinion about Obama. He's going to make a big difference and I choose to believe it's going to be a positive difference. I didn't vote for him. However, the more I see him the better I like him.

Seems Bush wanted to be different and break tradition to make his own. To not follow the leader of the pack and it cost him. I am not a bush fan. I am glad Obama is putting things back on track. I think it could be great. It is a right step in the right direction anyhow.

I, for one do! This will re-unite our ties with the US! I can't speak for the rest of Canada...but I for one, felt truly slighted when Bush broke tradition & made his first visit Mexico! And that is not that I feel we are of more significance than Mexico as a trading partner, ally....but that it was years of tradition that flew in the face of his decision! It was piqued even more when he called for the support of Canada in his latest war efforts! Cheers!

I didn't know this was a tradition. But i am glad to know that he will be visiting us soon. However, not everyone share the same point of view as us. I believe that Obama has done a good start for now. But in the eyes of some people, there is denial and coldness no matter how good he will do. My finance teach in university told us something important. His friend is an accounting and he used to do financial plan to the Prime Minister or somethign of the sort. And then the Pm has to approve it and sign it. Of course, sometimes they take wrong decisions to approve it but that's something normal, said my teacher. and he continued that people who never do mistakes are the ones who do nothing with their life. I think it's priceless...

there is not a prime minister or president in history that is liked by everyone in their country that is just the way it is.

My main worry is that peole all over the world are expecting too much from Mr. Obama. It will be years before we get out of this world economic crisis. However, of course he should visit his neighbour first! I am glad that he is doing this. To be honest, although I have no votng rights, I was rooting for Hilary Clinton. I wanted a women to be there in the White HOuse. But after reading Mr. Obama'a biography then I now have such respect for his ideals for not only a United States for for making the world more united. I wish him every success. Blessings

I don;t think that the people of the world is expecting miracles from obama, they just want better and open relations and that is fair to ask.
