Have you traveled alone?

I have just read an article for SOLO travelers. They are offering tips on how solo travelers could enjoy their vacation on their own. I haven’t really travelled to a totally different place alone. The most I did is traveling alone to a certain point and meeting a friend or family member in that place. I just can’t imagine myself traveling alone. With my paranoia about safety and all that, I doubt if I ever will. After reading this article, I might consider that provided that I have researched the place extensively.

Yes I did many times I guess and the latest one was quite far because it was half way across the world. I traveled before from Davao to Manila by myself for 4 times already; it's more or less a couple of hours by plane. The recent travel i had was on May last year coming from the Philippines to the USA all by myself again and it was a very long trip it takes me almost 3 days including the stop overs in some countries. Well basically am not a very cautious but in fact I like adventures in traveling so I never had any problems traveling alone, I enjoyed it very much.

Three days of traveling? That's too long for me.

I have traveled alone a couple of times and I wouldn't mind doing it again. I definately prefer to travel with my fiance or a friend, but when the others are busy or can't afford to travel, I would rather travel alone than miss out on a trip. I sometimes feel lonely when I travel on my own and miss having someone to talk to, but I always enjoy exploring a new town or country and travelling makes me happy even when I am travelling alone.

I backpacked around Europe for 7 weeks this summer completely solo and had a blast! It was great because I could pick my own itinerary, eat what I wanted, stay or go whenever I pleased and I wasn't subject to anyone else's whims. I met a South African guy in Spain who I sort of traveled with for a bit, but even he got on my nerves after awhile. I really enjoyed being by myself. It was even better because staying in hostels like I was, and being alone meant I was super approachable. Couples, or large groups of friends are more difficult to infiltrate or to get to know. Besides, I felt extremely independent and strong doing it all by myself. Although in some respects it would have been great to share the experience with someone else, I really enjoyed doing it solo. I'd definitely do another solo trip, too.

Wow, your trip made me envious. I want to go backpacking in Europe too. I still have work on my nerves though. Just thinking about it makes me think of some unpleasant things as well. But I know, I'll work up the courage to do just that. We'll see.

I have flown alone several times. Usually to see family. I cannot imagine having any fun vacationing alone. Who would I share my memories of the trip with? "Hey do you remember the time..oh no, I was alone" Just doesn't seem right.

You got a point there. Well, when I was reading the article, I was thinking like it could be an adventure or something. I guess, not everyone is into it. :)

I would like to travel (long drive) across the US or Canada as well. I think if you are driving, you are able to see the sights more. But then, I don't think I could do this alone. I might fall asleep while driving! lol

I have only traveled alone on business trips. Once I arrived at the hotel, there were structured programmes for us and we were kept together as a group all the time. Other than that, I have not really travelled alone. I don't think I will get such opportunity anymore now that I have a family.

Even in business trips, I haven't traveled alone. Usually it was with a colleague so haven't really done this too.

I just went to Rome, Italy last December and yes I travelled alone. I really want to see Rome and Vatican City but then none of my friends is available that time and the fact that I planned about 3x to be in ROme and that 3 plans was a failure because suddenly my friend will back out then I told myself, ok I think I better go alone. Before I decided to travel I did some research about the safety of the place. And I am very hapy with my trip although alone but I never felt alone in such a wonderful place and the nice thing is that I met new friends along my trip.

I bet you had a great time. I would love to do that as well. I am the "planner" in the group too and it iritates me when people suddenly backout. I understand they may have their reasons, but still, you prepared for it and everything. Researching about the place is the best way to go. Even if I am not traveling alone, I do this. I search for things about the place that my help us. My friends rely on me about these things already. They know that I wouldn't go anywhere without looking it up through the internet.

Hahaha we're the same! I am also sort of responsible in planning the trip especially searching the cheapest transportation and free admission to the musems and the nice place to visit.lol..I really research before I go to one place so eventhough you've not been there you almost feel like you are familiar with the place when you're finally there.

I have traveled solo on many occassions, by choice. I actually like it quite a lot. I'd say about 25% of my travel up til now has been solo.

Personally, I think that if safety is one's main concern; it's definitely safer to travel with people whom you trust. I must admit that I don't consider it weird if a person decides to travel all by himself or herself. Based on my own experience, I have travelled both by myself and together with my own family. Most often, I enjoy travelling with my own family specially if we're making a trip or going on a vacation to our hometown. I love seeing the sights along the countryside and if our daughter is with us in the trip, I enjoy playing with her while she sits on my lap. But when I'm bothered by problems or worries (specially financial in nature), I'd like to make a trip alone. But most often, this would only be a trip where I am quite familiar with my destination; just like you said. Somehow, I could clear my thoughts this way and formulate plans or courses of action to take. I don't want others to wait on me, specially when I go shopping. I also hate taking trips to the stores in a hurried manner, because I couldn't concentrate on what I planned to purchase which I might end up buying the wrong or defective merchandise. Also, it might irritate whoever my companion is, if I take so long in the store.

Taveling alone has its advantages and disadvantages. Just like what you've stated above. It is really up to that person. If you're up to it and you know you can do it without worrying about safety and other things, then do it.

I think I would actually like to go on vacation alone. Then I could do whatever I wanted to do and not have to worry about satisfying anyone else.

You're right on that note. If you are traveling alone, you are just responsible for yourself.

I have only travelled on my own once, and I don't think I would again. Although I got to see a lot of sights, I strongly think it would have been much more fun if I'd have had a friend with me while I was there. I will go again and take a friend with me to enjoy it with me.

i don;t travel lonely .i prefer to go in groups only . if we go lonely there will be no enjoyment and thrill. so i prefer for groups only rather than solo. if i go shopping in my place or see a movie, i can go lonely ,but i won;t go lonely for any other place or other country.

You're right. Although there are times when a thought comes to mind about traveling alone. But I haven't made up my mind yet. I am used to traveling with friends or family. So it takes time getting used to but would definitely try it one of these days.

I have never travelled alone. Always with family when i was younger. And now it's with friends or my boy friend. I wouldn't like travelling alone - the main part of vacation for me is sharing the new place in the world with someone I love. Then you have the memories with someone and can talk about the rest of your life.

I did travel alone a long time ago. But it was going to Texas for my basic training after I joined the service. I like to talk to people so while I was on the plane I talked to people and learned some things about different places. Other than this I have never traveled alone.

Meeting new people is another advantage of traveling alone. You just have to be careful about who you trust though.
