How Much Weight Do You Have to Lose to Get Excited About It?

I would normally say I'd need to see at least a 5 pound change, otherwise I could figure the weight loss was just dehydration or some biological processes. But I have been trying to lose weight for months now with no success at all. So I went out and ran nearly a mile the other day, and lost a pound! And I've kept it off now for half a week. I think running will be my new thing, because apparently it works. Even my clothes feel looser, but I know that can't really be right because it was just 1 pound. Still, it made me happy and hopefully will keep me motivated to run again this week!

It IS possible for your clothes to fit differnt by only losing one pound! Just because the number on the scale is staying the same doesnt mean that your body isnt changing. You may have lost some fat, but gained some muscle! I have lost 11.5 pounds so far this year and I am THRILLED! I have been happy with every pound lost! I weigh myself once per week. Monday mornings before I eat or drink anything. That way I know that it isnt just fluctuations with food. Another good way to measure progress is the measuring tape! Take measurements from all over your body! Your neck, your waist, your upper arm, your calf, your ribcage, your bust, your upper thigh, right above your knee... anywhere that you can think of! Repeat those measurements one month later. You may see inches melting away even when the pounds arent. This will help to encourage you! For other ideas, I highly recommend www.sparkpeople.com It is totally free. It has lots of great tips for everything involved in losing weight and maintaining once that weight is gone. That website is the only reason I am able to sit here today and tell you about the weight I have lost thus far! Congrats on the start of losing weight! Keep it up!

Derlila is right, the tape measure is your friend. You can learn a lot from it.

I will check out that website. I haven't lost any inches yet, but I didn't measure everywhere. The measurements I took were waist, hips, bust, torso, and rib cage. Why these? Because I bought a swimsuit online so I had to measure those areas. And then when I keep comparing back thinking I must have lost something, it is never even an inch. Not even half an inch. I don't think my hips can lose any inches just because I have naturally large hips. But my waist is disproportionately large.

I would definitely take more measurements as well. Even though everyone wants to lose around their waist first, that usually doesnt happen! For me, the first to go was from my thighs right above my knee. Keep at it, you will get there!

Well with running, your not only burning fat, but toning up as well... Good for you! I always hear people asking how to lose weight without working out. They want to use only a diet, which in the end won't help them at all. So keep up the workouts. Do you have a workout buddy? A friend is a good motivator. You can also join a gym that offers classes, if thats in your budget. I like to switch it up from cycling, kickboxing, latin dance, or yoga. If a gym is too much, then try riding a bike, or rollerblades to give you a variety. And last, make sure you eat a well balanced meal, but keep it low in calories. Everything thing is good in moderation. Let us know how it goes! =) Thanks for sharing =)

I am the opposite, I don't want to diet... I just want to exercise! I know it probably takes a bit of both, but honestly I eat pretty healthy already. I don't have a workout buddy, I really wish that I did. I have one for swimming in the summer, but she cannot go running unfortunately since she only has the use of one leg. I do want to try to be able to afford a gym membership this summer. I noticed the new gym out here has a lot of fun classes. I would love to join their cycling class or something like that. I used to ride a bicycle as transportation and back when I rode 100 miles a week, I could eat anything I wanted. Unfortunately, I didn't have enough balance for rollerblades and after I broke each arm once in them, I sold them on eBay for $6 to avoid future medical expenses, lol. But maybe I'll try it again sometime on a rink instead of on the sloping hills of this area. I will definitely try to focus on eating less. Hopefully I will find a running buddy soon too. Thanks!

I'd probably have to loose 10 lbs before I could get excited about it. As I've been working out for about a year I've actually gained more weight. I know some of it is muscle, but it's also due to bad eating habits. What can I say I love junk food!

I do eat junk food occasionally, but not a whole lot luckily. The good thing is, there is not a lot of vegan junk food. Well, I guess there is but I don't really like that much of it. Mostly just chips. I would love to lose 10 pounds. So far I think I'm at 2 pounds lost(I say think because it is not a digital scale, so it is a little hard to tell). I wouldn't mind gaining muscle as long as I could lose some inches on my waist or hips or something like that. I'd love to eventually be a size 6. I think smaller on me would look bad, but a 6 would be cool.

When I loose a pound, I always picture a pound of butter coming off my body. That is alot of fat! I would love to be able to run. My knees are shot and they kill even when I take long walks~ which I try to do alot. If I loose 5 pounds and keep if off, then I get excited. Then I have the motivation to go for the next 5 pounds. Sad it is so much easier to put it on than to take it off.

LOL! I like that image, butter. Haha, better than lard I guess that would be a worse mental image. My knees aren't very good so I got running shoes that have no raised heel. They are killing my feet so far though, but I haven't gotten used to them yet. I made a post about them, the Five Fingers "shoes", they're very interesting. :) I definitely agree it is easier to put the weight back on! And the bad thing is, I just realized there is an all you can eat buffet tomorrow and I want to go so bad! There goes my pound lost. :(

Diet is what is really imporant with weightloss Pigglies. I have found that diet and exercise is what will keep the weight off. For me to see a difference I like to see say 10 pounds of weight loss but that is me. I think 5 pounds is great too! I am planning on doing workouts here soon myself so I can start to get healthy again. I want to lose at least 50 pounds by the end of this year! I found this to be very helpful online you are more than welcome to check it out. http://tiny.cc/cdqUy Hope this helps and happy mylotting to you as well:)

Why is diet more important than exercise? Unless you're eating a bunch of junk food or something when not dieting. I eat healthy all the time, so it doesn't make sense for me to go on a diet. Diets usually end up ruining your metabolism, so that's not something I need. Hope you meet your goal! I'd like to lose 10 pounds, not sure if anyone would be able to tell, but I probably would.

I think that any weight you lose and successfully keep off is something to be proud of! Even if it's a pound, or half a pound, if you can keep it off, that's success. I think small goals are easier to achieve and can keep you motivated. Congrats on what you've done so far, and good luck to you in the future! :D

Thanks! That is definitely a good point. With the way my weight loss is going I can be very happy with just the pound lost if I can keep it off.

One pound is a great start. You are doing it right, slowly and by exercising not by all the B.S. diets out there, Keep it up. You get there.That's why it is great to play strings, you can play and exercise at the same time.

LOL, I just knew you'd try to get me back to practicing the violin/viola. I might practice some more this summer, I'm still trying to decide if I even want to continue with it just because I don't have enough time to keep up with it. Lately I haven't even had time to practice harmonica or piano either. But in 4 more weeks I'll be out of school so that should change.

The best thing to keep me motivated was short term goals! I went on vacation in February - 6 weeks into my weight loss. I set a goal of 9 pounds for that vacation. My current goal is to lose another 5 pounds by July 11. I want to look good in my sundress when my husband graduates! My ultimate goal is another 22.5 pounds - a total of 34 pounds. If I looked at that number all of the time, I would always get discouraged. But I know that I can do 5 pounds! I will worry about the rest after I get rid of those 5 pounds!

I try to have short term goals, but they just keep getting pushed back. When I was working out with the Wii fit I only had a goal of 1 pound per every 2 weeks and I rarely ever was able to meet that. Now that's what I call small goals. :)

5 pounds would be great. 10 Would be better. I know the first few are only water and can come back really easily. I would be much happier to lose 10 that way I would now that at least 5 of the pounds lost would be fat, and not just water. Losing 10 pounds is really hard though I have to say. But if I lost 10 I would be really, really happy.

I know mine isn't water weight, because unlike a diet I'm not dehydrating myself. I'm only exercising and I'm actually drinking way more fluids than I normally would. I would be happy too if I could lose 10 pounds. My body seems very resistant to my weight loss goals, lol!

Hi, Pigglies I would probably be happy with 5 pounds. But my real problem is not really my weight but that my body is not toned. I mean, I have fat upper arms and a tummy that is squashy. I think running is good and it's great that you lost a pound. Hey, that is an achievement. Have a nice day!

Actually, I guess I'm the same way. I don't care what the scale says, I would like to be toned. I have surprisingly toned arms now. I'd like them to be even more toned, but you'd be amazing at what helping with elephant seal pups can do for your arms, lol! But my tummy is still all squishy and gross. My waist line is abnormally large and I really want that to change so I can find more pants that fit properly. My legs are in need of some work, but they're not nearly as bad as my belly. It's all that belly fat that is holding me back from swimsuit season! Hope you have a great day too!

I agree with you, about five pounds of weight loss is enough for me to start getting excited. I fluctuate throughout the day and throughout the month by at least 2-3 pounds, so five is a good threshold number to know that I've really lost a bit of weight. I haven't weighed myself in a few days, and I was hoping that I'd lost a bit, but I don't feel that confident about it, just in the way my body feels. I'll check tomorrow morning though. Wish me luck!

I think at my current weight, I would have to lose at least 20 pounds before I would really get excited about it. I think this would be the point where my clothes would start to get loose and I would actually start to feel a little bit better. I think, feeling this way, is one of the things that really stops me from throwing myself full force into a diet. I need to be able to celebrate each pound coming off, but my mindset is just not there.
@Pigglies (9329)

It is definitely hard to get that mindset! That's why now that I am motivated, I am going to just run with that! Literally in this case too because I'm going to try to start running more and more.

I can lose a pound and I am happy. I have such a hard time losing weight that any amount is an accomplishment for me. I don't care if it's water weight or fat. It's still weight. LOL

I have a hard time losing weight too, but I still want it to be fat. I could lose muscle pretty easily if I wanted to and that would be a lot of weight. But not very good for me.

I would feel better if I could lose 10 pounds. I had lost 17 pounds but now I can not seem to stay motivated to stay on a diet. I go to the gym at least 3 times a week. But, I have found out just exercising will not make you lose weight. You have to also diet along with exercising and if you do both you will lose the weight.
@Pigglies (9329)

I think the problem with just exercising is that most people who try this also end up eating more. I know a few cyclists who have gained a bunch of weight and it's mostly because cycling makes you so hungry. I figure I won't change what I eat and then exercise alone will help me. I already eat healthy so it is hard for me to go on a diet. There isn't a whole lot that I could cut out. I measured my average calorie intake before and it is only around 2,000 calories a day, sometimes a little more. So that's not really too bad.

I would vote for the five pound amount myself. I am hard to impress. I would like to lose even more than that, but five would be a nice start. You may have lost more than a pound of fat, you may have gained muscle and shed some water weight as well. Good Job.
@Pigglies (9329)

Thanks! I might have gained muscle because when I exercise I really go until I feel the burn. But I don't think I lost any water because I'm staying well hydrated with my exercising. It actually helps you to lose weight in the long run to stay hydrated. I want to lose fat, not just pounds on the scale. I will definitely be impressed with myself if I can lose 5 pounds. Because for me lately I have been in a weight loss rut for months! I am usually just happy if I am stable.

If I could loose any weight I would get excited about it. Because any thing helps you get healthy, and into the clothes you want to wear
