Up-Date About My Landlord: Part Trois (Three)

Well I can breathe a sigh of relief. If you have been following my discussions about "My Landlord Might Be Pulling Crap On Me" you'll know that I was concerned that my landlord may have been pulling some crap on me. In summary, I had mailed my September rent on September 3rd via certified mail. There was an "attempt" to deliver the very next day but no one was in the office to accept it, so a notice was left--it was NEVER picked up. In the meantime, despite writing letters to my landlord I got a letter from his royal highness that my rent was past due and tacked on a late fee. I wrote another letter indicating that nope I wasn't late but it was his failure to pick up my Certified Letter with my September rent money order. Since so much time passed, my Certified letter was returned to me on Tuesday, September 29. So yesterday, September 30, I resent my September rent via Priority/Certified/Return Receipt--I haven't sent my October rent yet (plan to do that tomorrow...wanted to mail them separately...JUST in case of another mix up). As I indicated I wanted to do a wait and see, if by remailing my September rent the same crap would be pulled on me and my mailing wasn't accepted again...if so then I knew he was pulling crap on me. Well I can breathe a sigh of relief...My September rent via Priority Mail/Certified/return receipt was ACCEPTED AND DELIVERED @3:52 p.m. just making it as the landlord closes the office at 4:00 p.m.....so they now have my September rent...now to see what happens when I send my October rent. So maybe I was jumping the gun and getting paranoid, but if you've been following my discussions about this you have gotten a sense what a shat my landlord is. Any of you have recent problems you've been dealing with and wasn't sure which direction it would go, either good or bad then jumped and did a happy dance when it went in your favor?

You have every right to be paranoid! Of course you also have to blame the Postal Service too. Your problem reminds me of my waiting for a grant check and it didn't show and didn't show...I asked the mail lady to check the other boxes for it and she snapped at me "I DON'T misdeliver mail!!!" In her special ugly sort of way. A month later I got a call from a neighbor that hadn't been home for a month and she informed me (after I had to file paperwork with the college, make two trips to the main campus 75 miles one way from my home)that the darn check had been in her box for the past month+! Enjoy your paranoia!!! I was busily clearing out the back bedroom so you'd have a place to stay...you'd have to put up with four cats and four dogs and a crazy lady. Oh, I found the items that I had mentioned in emails for your hands. I will be sending a pair to you in a week or so when I am feeling better.

The "misdelivery" thing reminds me of something that happened years ago--my mother was still alive and got her SS check by mail. Well one month it didn't arrive and of course it was panic time as she needed that money to pay the rent. Then we got a phone call from a neighbor down the block. She said some instinct told her to look at the pile of envelopes near the mailbox section of her building...sure enough, there was my mother's check. Sorry to hear you're still under the weather..so am I..still haven't gotten rid of this bronchitis even though I had taken medicine for it

Landlords are such a pain in the a--. They will try anything the can to suck money out of your pocket. I know this because I rented in Chicago, where the rent is sky-high and terribly overpriced. My advice, move! Once they start that sh-- they won't stop because they know they can get by with it, and the legal system will most always take their side. A lordlord once tried to take me to court but I never went...f--- that! Personally, I think rent is a huge waste of money because youre not actually getting anything back from it. Buying a house is much better because at least you know it will be yours, which you can sell again if you need to. Landlords are a scam! I have rented twice, and because my credit sucks, I'll probably have to rent again. Would love to buy a house someday!

The rents are sky high here in the NYC area...average rent is well over $1,000 a month so moving is definitely not an option for me...it's the reason why many people, even if they would love to move out to a better apt, stay stuck in a way and stay put

I remember you had had your own problems with rent before that the place that handled sending your rental money to your landlord didn't, right?

No happy dance here - my landlord is pulling 'crap' as you put it and I'm about fried. Lets start with no power for a whole night because they didn't pay the bill - included in my rent. Hole in bathroom ceiling from leak upstairs that lasted for nearly a week. Haven't had any lights or power in the bathroom for over a month now dispite numerous reminders and concern there is a short in the electrical system and I'm going to come home to a burned out house one day - along with everything I own :( Happy dance will come when I move out and they return my security deposit which I'm pretty sure at this point I will never see as they are planning to file bankrupsy any day now :(

Slumlords :( I'm sure I could report them to someone but not sure how other than possibly the health department but then I'm sure they would make my life even more miserable. I am in the process of looking for another place - hopefully less money and quieter than where I'm at. Don't want to 'rattle the bushes' until I'm ready to move though.

Yeah I do the same thing and keep a low profile with my landlord and never complain...he could decide to make my life a living hell as well--like right now it's darn chilly in the apt...no heat. He makes his own rules up that he doesn't turn the heat on until after Oct. 15th when by LAW it's supposed to be provided by Oct. 1st...how he gets away with it I don't know

Yeesh...you're certainly having fun...NOT--most landlords don't give a shat about their tenants wellbeing...they just want to collect the money, right? can you complain to some housing authority in your area about needing all those repairs?

I'm really glad everything is working out for you! I was really worried that he was trying to play on you. I'm happy that hopefully this was just one unforseen incident. I gotta say all the landlords I have had have been pretty good, well as far back as I can remember that is lol. well I hope things keep working out for you.

I'm just wondering how much longer he IS going to be our landlord, he's not exactly young...I think his grown son (in his late 40s) might be a better landlord--at least he likes cats...LOL...our current landlord has a phobia about cats believe it or not.

Good!! Now I want to see what's going to happen with the October rent. My only concern is, there was never a problem before with him getting the rent right? Why all of a sudden is there problems? Is he possibly closing earlier than 4:00? And, why isn't he going to pick up his rent, I'm sure they leave a note on his door, or when they'll be back to deliver his CERTIFIED letter. What gives?

First whenever one gets a "notice" of attempt to deliver it's this little slip of paper..one can call the number to redeliver or simply pick it up at the designated post office. Whenever I get one I call for a redelivery---you'll die laughing why. I quite literally have a post office one block away from me. Yet if there is a package or certified/insured letter/package, one has to pick it up at an entirely different post office some MILES away...why? My block is designated as a "Too busy" one...meaning too many apts/families/people to store any letters or packages in my post office. As for why I had this problem when I didn't before...who the heck knows?
2 Oct 09
Hi pye, I am so glad it has all worked out in your favour and lets hope it doesent happen again with your October payment, its not your fault they close at foru and the payments are not collect, they should their job properly. Bright Blesings. Tamara

That is a relief! I’m glad that that your September rent has gone through okay and you avoided a late fee! He doesn’t care how often you pay on time and the once when he doesn’t receive it you sure hear about it and it’s not even your fault but his for not collecting it! Hope he doesn’t try any more crap on you... The only thing that is up in the air in my life at the moment is my cat's health, I still don't know if he has cancer or not but looking at him at the moment and the way he is eating again I would not know he is sick except for the daily vomit and the fact that he is on daily meds. I'll let you know if it is time for me to do a happy dance or not!

...Hi pyewacket, I am so glad to hear that the first step is positive. Perhaps you won't have any problem with October's rent, let's hope. I thought that I was being unfairly treated over a small matter, not involving a landlord or rent, but something else. I was ticked, decided in my mind what I was going to do to retaliate, and then I talked myself into waiting and I was glad I did, because I was wrong and everything was okay. Sometimes.......slowing it down can save embarrassment. Take care of yourself.

Good morning, pye! What a saga...and what a dilemna this crazy landlord is creating, and I too, would be wary of his/her actions! I think that you are sooooo wise to have a COMPLETE paper trail...but I also think that this person is some "kinda snake," as he/she is creating such an unfriendly environment for you to exist in, whilst digging for excuses to evict you! The almighty dollar prevails! I have a rental property on my homestead! Brooke (the tenant) has been here 9 years, I have raised the rent a total of $25.00 in those years, as Hydro is included in the rent, and it increased humungously....BUT, I am so happy to have a consistent tenant (few glitches)and NOT have to go thru the process of re-renting,as there is a huge cost in re-renting, both time & money. A great scam here in Vancouver (because NEXT year we host the Olympics) is to boot all the tenants out, under the guise of refurbishing, redecorating, and minor changes are made, and NOW they can charge the exhorbitant rates that go along with Olympics! Do you have a State Rentalsboard where you can file a grievance? Pye, I really hate the unrest that you are going thru...what a stressor, and what a jacka$$ your landlord is! Please take care...and keep us posted on October's chain of events. Cheers!

I guess it helps to be a slightly neurotic perfectionist about things..talk about a paper trail...I still have the money order receipts for my rent going back more than three years! Plus a lot of other important papers in relation to my living here all these many years...one never knows, right?

I am soooo GLAD that you have "dotted all you i's and crossed all your t's"....sorry you have had to go thru all this to CYA, but these people seem like the landlords from heck! I am also glad that you have paperwork at ready, and I am just wondering if it would be a good plan, to paste and print your posts here as kind of a diary, if and when you may have to lodge your complaint. I truly am sorry, that you are living under these kinds of stressors, and know that it is repeated at the end of every month! Take care...and cheers!

I'm glad you got it resolved and lets hope you don't have any trouble with this month's rent. Why do they deliver mail so late in the day, it would be better if they delivered it earlier so that way you'd be sure your rent made it to the office in time.

I have no idea why the mail delivery to the landlord's office was so late that particular time..since I track the "progress" of delivery usually I notice the mail (or at least my certified letter) arrives before noon.

I am glad to say I haven't had any trouble with my mail. I am glad you have gotten your September rent to your landlord. Now to see if he tries to charge you a late fee. I hope you sent a letter saying that was the September rent, not the October. We did have a problem a couple of years ago and got an eviction notice. We got help with it through our legal aid here. I was very stressful. I hope all this works out for you and that you have no late charges or anything.

I bet you are happy knowing it has been resolved or at least lets hope so, you will find out when your Oct rent goes out. Some landlords are a PITA which means a pain in the A$$. Years ago Lacey was renting from a man that actually kicked everyone out of the place with a 5 day notice, even though everyone had been paying on time. Some landlords are like that.

Why was everyone kicked out of Lacey's apt building and with such short notice??
