hi fellow mylotters I have seen several discussions that all used the substitutes instead of plain English words. Texting I believe it is called. I do not think mylot admins really likes this and it is frankly very irritating to me to try to decipher some of them. I saw dis used for this and dat used for that, and it sounded to me like a corny bad man in an old movie.Does this not bother any of you? Or should I say does dis not bother any of y?

It doesn't bother me at all if I can understand it. Not all mylotters are from English speaking nations and I praise for knowing different languages. Texting makes it easier type saving energy for your fingers and arms.

defcon please read the rules, its not about other languages it'is about using English not textese, mylot says use English so why not' obey the rules. it takes no more energy to type the word you than it does to type u. and if you constantly do not pay attention to mylot rules you may have discussions deleted. and wonder why.

The rules tell us to use English. Text language is NOT English and will not get picked up by search engines. Just because they do not get deleted means they are earning just the same? I doubt it.

I do understand the rules here at myLot. But for some one who frequently uses both forms of communicating, I thing sometimes it just slips into discussions and responses by accident. I'm kind of surprised thinking about it, that many of my responses haven't been deleted. I use LOL quite a bit, I guess I better stop and use instead. Thanks for the reminder Hatley!

I am saddened by those who use text-style here, regardless of whether Iunderstand it or not. This is not the place to use it and those that do will lose a lot of earnings for doing so. Not only are we told to use English and make quality posts but we also know that the length of the post counts too. Why bother using text-style which shortens a post here? If the number of letters used ina post is longer when using English correctly then I can't see the point of text-style at all and usually those that are using it will later complain that their earnings are low here. Of course they are because they are taking shortcuts, not using English as requested and their posts are not picjed up by search engines. There is a place for text - but it is NOT here on myLot

Hello, Hatley. Once again we're on the same wavelength. I hate textspeak with a passion, and will not use it, even when texting on my phone. I wouldn't dream of using it in any of my writing - it is disfiguring to our beautiful, complex language and belongs on the street, not on a reputable site. I will not even respond to discussions using textspeak, because if the discussion leader can't be bothered to use proper English, I can't be bothered to read their inane, juvenile ramblings. Most of the posters who use textspeak don't use it because English is not their first language, they use it because they are too lazy to type the correct words. They should be up on a charge for murdering the English language. See, you've got me going now. Naughty Hatley!

Sandra hi oh my yes we should bring them up on charges that would be great. I am laughing as I read this. I do feel that very few of those wo use textspeak are the ones with English as a second language. Most are born Americans who are just too lazy to bother typing a few more letters so they instead kill the English language.

If you take a few minutes to read the Guidelines you will see that anything else other than English is a violation. Test-style is NOT English and will earn nothing here.

velocity it appears to me from your rather snotty way of talking that you either have not read the mylot rules or just plain do not care to follow them. But I would bet you that you would complain if you did not get responses. Now why would you not get responses? Because you used text instead of ordinary words and a lot of older people do not use text and did not understand your discussion. So you are biting off your nose to spite your face.Come down off your high horse and read the blasted rules.Mylot admins says to use English only, repeat English only.If you do not like these rules take it up with Mylot Admins not with me.

Hi Hatley, I think the majority of the people who responded to your discussion feel that texting is not appropriate and annoying for myLot. I am one of those people as well. I actually have a real distaste for text/shorten messages. The very first time I saw a message addressed to me (by a much younger high school kid) I thought something had happened from the time he texted to me and when I received it, there were missing letters in every word! I then called him up and said, hey check your message all these letters got deleted before it got to me. He thought I was crazy and therein was my lesson in Text. I still have a hard time trying to decipher all the shorten/slangs of Text and usually by the time I am through, the importance of the message is lost on me and I am deliriously happy that I managed to get through the message.

hi linamachina A few think I am nuts but they also do not'seem to know that mylot really wants us to use plain English words in our discussions, comments, and responses. The silly thing is these same people will complain that they did not get any responses. But it will never occur to them that maybe some people did not understand one word of what they said. If we do not understand a discussion most of us will pass on by.

Hatley, I almost passed right over your discussion when I saw it started with "y do u..." until I saw your name as the person starting the discussion. Since on a normal basis (since the short time I have been on myLot) I have noticed that you respond to discussions in the most sensible manner, I read the rest of the discussion and thought I want to respond to this! I do tend to skip over discussions that are riddled with Text language.

its absolutely true..sometimes its annoying trying to decipher the meanings (particularly for not that proficient ones with non-english background) .no matter how efficient it may sound to use texting it might create misunderstandings too.its better to stick to plain english which can be understood by all.

hi neo-matrix You are so right, it just makes it all much harder for anyone trying to learn English as a second language. If all would just use simple English words then those from other countries would be able to understand much more easily.

It really bugs me when people use texting language here. In fact, I got a reply from a very nice newbie today that used that type of language and I told them they'd get better responses if they spelled everything out. I said it nicely, I hope they didn't take offense. Our young people can't spell as it is and this will further degrade their skills. On a side note, I was doing a survey today and one of the choices was "I has to wait too long for a table"!!

I don't even use the abbreviations when I text - I'm so darned wordy!!! LOL But, I do understand why they do when they text - it's because they are or were limited to 160 characters, so they came up with a type of shorthand to get more words in. But, once you're on here or other traditional language sites, you SHOULD use standard English spellings (with a few exceptions - LOL being one of them).

English is not my language, in my country it can be different meaning if only use short words. I'm not perfect and I don't bothered them if write it with "c,y,u,r" or other simple word. But, I should learn for complete words here.

The text-speak bugs the heck out of me, as well. The sad part is, some of the words that people shorten in order to "save time" are already very short to begin with, so what's the point? It's stupid...just spell the words out, it won't kill you.

I think that this text talk came from text messaging on mobile phones as you only get a certain amount of characters per message therefore people did not want to have to pay for two, however it has become part of everything you see written nowadays and to be honest it does annoy me alot. I even heard the other day that i was discussed about using text talk in schools for easier work processing which i feel is absolute stupidity! to be honest as ive had to get used to it using sites like facebook etc i even find myself doing it from time to time haha. Another one that annoys me ie LOL which means laugh out loud i think it sounds stupid lol!

hi loneraver oh oh I use lol but only if its really really funny but I do admit it is used in very inappropriate places. Also I feel that a lot of people who do make discussions using textspeak have not bothered to read any of the rules. Mylot admins states it pretty clearly that we should use English in our discussions and comments, and responses.

Not only does it "bother" me; but, it should bother the people who are doing it. MyLot does state that spelling, capitalization, and punctuation do count when they are paying you for your posts; so, posts with these "text shortcuts" do not pay as much as the same post would if everything was spelled correctly. So, by saving a couple of keystrokes these people are actually earning less money than they could have with the same post.

I call that crypted language which I hate with a passion! People who use this type of language is going to forget how the english language really is and how to spell. Instead they're going to know this new type of language in which will eventually earn a name of it's own.

Hi Hatley! I don't really mind the text words because I have learned alot them because I use "Instant Messanger" which it when you chat with someone who is online and it makes it easier to use some of the text words because it is just faster. I happened to learn them because the people that I was "chatting" with were younger and they taught me the text words just from talking to them. I don't think that it should be allowed here in the discussions though. This is not for texting or chatting so there shouldn't be any of those words used here! Only correct English words should be used here because we are having proper discussions.

I don't know why people do that on here either, but whatever. It's their choice, I suppose. I personally think that texting-language (using shortcuts like "y" instead of "why", "u" instead of "you", etc) should ONLY be reserved for.. texting! Typing is another story. Especially on MyLot - where they actually PAY you for giving GOOD responses; why take short-cuts at all?

Hi Hatley, I actually find it an abysmal use of language and deplore it. I refuse to accept text messages on my telephone or send them back, which I wouldn't do even if I knew how to do it. When they are used on here I feel like correcting their English, but we aren't allowed to do that. It does actually say that we shouldn't use this text language though.
