Do you plan on traveling by plane any time soon . . .

Since with "heightened security" a gun dealer accidentally carried live ammunition on board a plane? I have only traveled by plane one time since 9/11 and with each incident I become even less likely to do so again. For many of the places I would go, by the time I would travel to an airport, get there early, go through boarding and security measures, and suffer any delays, I could drive halfway there, without paying for luggage or worrying it would get lost. I could choose where and what I ate, and drive directly to my destination. I do not see me flying anywhere real soon.

I have already planned 2 trips that involve flying, and it'll probably be several more this year. I can't really get where I want if I don't fly, as driving would take several days, so I will continue flying I suppose. There has been talk about starting with body-scans in Oslo, but when I can I usually don't fly through Oslo. Not that I'd mind, it just that it will take more time.

Yes, that is a real downfall. It increases the cost of the trip immensely.

Having to pay for luggage is one of the things that put me most of with certain air-lines. One thing is a short trip to Oslo (about an hour), then you might go with only hand-luggage, but who goes to London or Riga or Berlin etc without luggage? I know some people who pack a bag in their hand-luggage and only pay for luggage back if they're going shopping, and as Norway is very expensive compared to most places we can fly to, most people shop.

I have never been on a plane and don't have a need to fly at this point in my life. I worry for others that do have to fly. Security needs to be beefed up at the airports.

I would really like to get the family back east this summer. They haven't seen most of the family from there since 2003, some of them are getting old and having health problems. I'd also like them to see Washington DC and some other places. And I don't anticipate driving all the way back east from California.

With three kids in tow, there is that consideration. Hubby and I travel by ourselves and find that the long drives are soothing. In your shoes probably it would not be so much. Then there is also the matter of having some place to stay on the way and feeding the young beasties, and whether you have enough vacation days.

They're pretty good on long drives actually. With our van they can plug in their video games and that usually keeps them occupied. But I just wouldn't want to use 5 days of our vacation, each way, driving. I'd rather do all the driving on the east coast. Though flying 5 people, unless we run into a really good deal like we did with Orlando, can't be cheap.

hi gardengerty,
Wow, that already quite too long that you have not travel by plane since the 9-11, 2001 attack. In my place I have travel by plane for almost thrice last year and still looking for another flight by this year. Though, their may be fear associated with it after the incident it bother me though I just pray before i board the plane to calm me of any worries. Luckily, i have no bad experiences as the flight go smoothly to reach my destination safely. Anyway, their are heightened security awareness in every international flights and it so happen the intelligent forces are thinking of the effective ways to fight the terrorist schemes which on the same time the other is also thinking of the other way to pass on the security which should be deem unfavorable for the passengers and the airplane crew. I do believe you would lose your fear with the help of prayer it would take away your worries.

Many of the places I want to go can be reached by car. I feel that if they are going to have these security measures, they need to train the people who are implementing them.

I'll be boarding a plane in just a few days. I'm heading to Jamaica for some fun in the sun and my brother's wedding. No way to drive there. Airport security is really not that big of a deal. And if you fly at odd times or from smaller airports is takes no time at all to get through security.

That is a good thing to consider. I hope that the earthquake activity does not interfere with the plans. I heard from a friend online in Jamaica today, and they felt the earthquake today as well.

When President Regan fired the striking air traffic controllers and the sloppy conditions of the airplanes were exposed, I lost interest in flying and haven't
flown since.
Besides, driving is a much more pleasant means of travel; you don't have to deal with train or bus delays or reroutings; enormous crowds of folks waiting for connections; lost luggage; overworked and underpaid employees with attitudes; and
prices that don't justify the service. And if it isn't a dire emergency, there are roads that have a lot less traffic than the major thruways.
A friend of mine's went into one of the above businesses to pay with cash for a ticket for his daughter, was told because he wasn't using a credit card and he wasn't paying for the ticket online there would be a $15 service fee.

I see you are a person after my own heart. I have hardly flown at all in the past ten years. I do not like more fees for less service, and I do love seeing the countryside.

I dont intend flying anywhere soon, but that's because I really cant afford to.
The security situation doesn't faze me. Australia has very good security and our country is less accessible to terrorists. Although they still get here sometimes for sure. I'm not going to let these morons affect my ability to travel.
I agree with you regarding the time spent getting to the airport, lining up, etc; it's a real pain.

It is the time that is the most irritating. They say they are causing all of the delays in the name of security, but it does not seem to be very effective. It takes us twelve hours to see our daughter, and it would take over twenty to see Bob's family, but we would have a good time traveling instead of waiting around an airport. I am not sure when we will travel again, but it will be in about six months.

Since 9/11 airport security has tightened quite considerably. I flew to Los Angeles and then on to French Polynesia from there two months after that awful event. I went via the Cook Islands by air to New Zealand. At that time there was foot and mouth disease in England so they cleaned my boots for me when I arrived at Auckland Airport. I flew to Samoa on my way home on that long trip on mine. Since that trip I have been on lots of other trips. My last few trips since 2007 I have been bothered by the awful security measures in UK airports. I don't like the liquids rule. My next flight will be to Halifax in Canada in June 2010.

You are fortunate to get to do so much travel, and my point of view would change, I am sure if I were traveling as much as you do. My travels are usually to see family. I think details that you included about other threats, like hoof and mouth disease and the airport cleaning your boots is very interesting. I think if I were to take a trip for Christmas to see hubby's family, I would probably pack my gifts and things and ship them, as well as most of my luggage.

GardenGerty,
At this moment, I do not see my travel schedule changing to a less moderate frequency and I have already been to 5 countries in the past 3 months with another 3 scheduled within next week.
I think the airports around the world have heightened their securities but then again it is just for the better good of the traveling population. However, I have seen some paranoia at certain places where we have the implementation of x-ray machines, thorough security checks where we literally need to remove our shoes, pat downs and many other detailed checks which never have been done before.
Nowadays, we need to check in WELL in advance than we normally do and that we should be wary what we pack in our carry on and checked in luggage. It is really hyper sensitive now and I suppose it is good and will get better with these controls in place.

If the security people were well trained, and were doing their jobs it would be one thing, but they are often not. I travel just within the United States, and my car is more comfortable than the seats on the planes, so I had just as soon drive as to get slapped with all kinds of extra fees.

I'm not planning on traveling by plane any time soon. I just read on the news that the fees on bags and what-not is going to increase again. Though I usually fly southwest airlines (bags fly free), it's still pricey and risky for me. Well, in reality - I just don't have the money to travel anywhere, really. *Sigh* I wish I'll win the lottery!

I live in an island, so if I want to leave the country I have to take a plane (a ship and then a train and then... is a drag).
I don't have any issue with taking a plane now. Those things happen, but you can't live afraid.

You are so correct, if you live on an island you have very limited choices to leave. Have fun as you travel.

Despite of the strict regulations put into place by airports because of the "heightened security" I would still love to travel, hopefully this year. But then I have to be early to avoid long lines, and never make a joke out of bombs or else they will arrest you and presume that you are a terrorist.

Obviously if I needed to go someplace overseas, I would have to fly, but mostly, within the United States, I am going to drive and make the journey part of the experience.

hi there! yes that's true that there are lots of incidents lately in plane because of the lack of security i guess., but i don't think this should stop me in my trip this coming march in singapore and thailand. so i will still continue my flight and make my vacation not ruin by this event. thanks for this nice discussion. have a nice day ahead!~

I am not so worried about terrorism and threats if people are trained to do their job well. It just takes so much time. If I was privileged to afford an overseas trip, I would take it, and not complain about the wait. For the domestic trips, however, I enjoy the automobile and the freedom I have when traveling that way. I only have to meet the schedule of myself and my companion.

Currently no trips are in the works. However i just returned from a 2 week trip to Hawaii. I didnt find flying much more of a hassle than anytime before but...I admit I never did fly before all the 9/11 security. If you make sure your liquids and such are checked and are fully prepared before you get to the airport they dont make a fuss. For some reason though they always scan my laptop bag and check it with a peice of fabric. Not sure why..once i even had to turn it on for them.
Even going through Vancouver with the Olympics going on wasnt a big deal flying however...somehow flying with 7 other people - including 2 babies is alooooot more luggage and sets alot of peoples in the groups nerves off when others dont hurry along. (ok it was my nerves and we almost missed the flight because someone thought that waiting in line for coffee was a good idea) I was at the flight 10 minutes before the rest of them cause i got worried and went to our gate.

I wanted to go to Las Vegas for our 20th anniversary that is coming up, but my husband did not want to go there, he is not really fond of flying, he has a minor phobia. But since that plan is not happening there are no plans to anywhere on a plane any time soon, instead we are going to a place in Pittsburg that we saw on the Food Network, and then we are going to go to Hershey Pensylvania. It should be nice.

I just find the delays to be frustrating, when I could be getting on down the road in a car, and it does not seem to be really effective at improving security.
