Body odor

India
April 16, 2010 4:48am CST
It is summer here in India, the temperature shoots to 45 degrees centigrade in noon time. In spite of bath in the morning using herbal soaps like sandal, khas, neem etc I feel my body smells. The sweet scent of the soaps is gone. I spray perfumes and apply talcum powder on the armpit area too. Body odor is natural I admit but we should not be smelly. What you do fight body odor, use deodorants, perfumes? I am not in favor of using too much of the chemical stuff. It is better to shower frequently using soaps as I have said. Please share your views. Happy posting, cheers Prof

Hey Professor! I understand that some people don't like to use too many chemicals, but the use of deodorants is a necessity when you are in the contact of others and out in the public! I find that some people (and I am not being accusing or insulting so please do not take personally) from different cultures don't believe in deodorants or personal hygiene as we do here in the USA! I have found that people from other cultures don't bathe as often as they should and either don't realize how awful they smell or don't care! I ride the bus and find this extremely offensive in the Summer months! I will say that there are Americans too who are not cleanly enough either so this goes out to them also! I just don't understand how someone doesn't know that they stink! This is a very touchy subject for me! I am a two shower a day person, especially in the Summer and so is my boyfriend! We believe in smelling good all the time! We use deodorant and perfume and cologne and powders! All I want is for people to bathe every day and use deodorant! Is that too much to ask?

Hi professor. Its good you don't use that chemical stuff. I don't use any soaps at all but sometimes wash with honey (its a natural antibiotic and skin conditioner) and scent water with essential oil and sometimes I just use plain warm water. Since I stopped using the soaps I don't smell bad when I sweat anymore even if its a lot and I don't have on deodorant. I still use deodorant though just because but I read its best to avoid the stuff with anti antiperspirants. If you don't sweat in one place it will all come out in another anyway and make things worse. They have organic kinds too without the chemicals. Just look in the same places where you buy your herbal soap or any where they promote natural products. Also drinking a lot of citrus juice will make you smell better as well as seasoning foods with cinnamon, cloves and other aromatic spices and limit your red meat intake.

Summertime is really a challenge in keeping and maintaining a clean odorless body, so in this case what can be done is to maintain and observe proper body hygiene, his means taking a bath once or twice a day, wearing a clean and unused cloth and changing it every once in a while if it already soaked up in sweat and using an antibacterial soap and also using some deodorants, this will somehow lessen the odor that will come from the body.

Hi Professor! I think it also depends on what soap you're using. Sometimes, it causes a bad reaction against your body that adds up to the unwanted odor. Try experimenting with other soaps, you can try soaps with mint flavor for you to have the fresher feeling. Also, choose a deodorant for sports, it works great with me. Even here in the Philippines, the heat of the summer is just terrible. One way to prevent it is stay at home or inside the office. Bring an umbrella if you really need to go out. And the best part is to take a bath twice a day. Hope this helps. :)

For goodness sake...p l e a s e use a deodorant. Forget extra showers and baths...that's a dreadful waste of water. Wake up people. Sure, diet helps but you can't always change your way of life in that regard. However some people find that consuming garlic in huge quantities is not good as the odour comes out through the pores of the skin (it's not just a person's breath) so maybe you can cut down on the garlic. Truly friend, there is nothing worse than the acrid stench of body odour and it is so easy to overcome with a simple roll on deodorant. It will not only stop the smell but also the sweating...from your underarms at least. Cheers.

Summer is really getting hotter and hotter each year so we must take all the necessary precaution to avoid body odor. As for me I don't use commercial deodorant. I don't need them. I am using tawas stone and it has been very effective and cheaper too. After bathing, I'd just wet my tawas stone and rub it on my armpits. That would keep me secure and confident all day.

Hi professor, I too hate body odor! And I am in Hyderabad, temperature is nearly the same at your place. The heat seems to surround me. Earlier we never used to sweat here. But the last three years, we have been sweating as if we are near some coastline! Of course, it is the effect of excessive construction activity out here. The heat just doesnt have room to escape upwards! :( As to bath - I noticed that if I have bath early in the morning - i.e., by 7 or so, I start feeling uncomfortable by 10 or so! Which means, I would have to take bath four times a day. :) So I have delayed my bath just that bit. I take bath around 10. That way I still feel fresh till four or so when I can take my second bath. :) I use deo and I use it behind my ears as well as we ladies sweat in our hair as well. That way I dont feel the stink.

It is also summer season here in the Philippines and we are having a very hot and dry afternoon. Good hygiene is the key to have a fresh body scent. During this season, our body kept on releasing sweat so if your body is not that clean, that sweat will produce an odor. So make sure that you always take a bath with a good soap and use good quality of deodorant that will stay its scent for a long period of time. And the dress or clothes that you wear matters. Just make sure to use clean clothes(should be cotton). And put perfume that will last.

Hello! I think Indian people are fun of spicy food. Because in my research spicy food contributes a lot the body odor in the body. I agree one comment here states that diet contribute a lot to lessen the body odor. Any way I will just email you if i could already feature a blog about body odor, the ways and means to eliminates this problems.

application of perfume, or talcum poweder will not keep away the body odor. external application works temporarily. in the hot summer months, we sweat a lot and this sweat carry the toxins and waste out of the body in small quantity. some of them have very bad smell. bathing is the best way. the other is to drink lots of water, and strictly NO juice or colas. water dilutes the toxins and other effluents, which reduces the odor to some extend. drink more water and bath twice during the day should atleast keep away the bad smell for sometime, if not fully.

prof, to a season like this, i don't stay outdoor for a long time particularly during high noon while the sun is not yet waxing. my room temperature is 21DegC and i enjoy staying indoor while playing some online games like scrabble, etc.. what i am doing to fight body odor is to take a pleasant exercise morning time followed by a pleasant bath. at times, deodorant and perfumes doesn't suppress body odor especially if we perspire too much so cooler temperature while staying indoor is really recommended in my favor.

If you have bicarbonate of soda(baking soda) available, that is very good for keeping away smells. You can wash under your arms with it if you dilute the powder with water. There is a crystal deodorant that allows you to perspire without becoming smelly, in the UK there is a version called pit rock, it is solid and you wet the clean area and then apply it. It really does work even on feet.

The frequent rate of bathe will help to reduce body odour but not cure it, i will advice the visit and talk to a doctor about it, for my choice and understanding i would not participate in stressful activities that makes you continue to sweat and reduce the long walks under the scorching heat of the sun,

Men tend to have stronger body odor than women. I usually don't think about it much I just have a shower twice daily and using deodorant. It hot season I usually don't wear a perfume because when perfume mix with sweat tend to be stink. Especially man perfume who usually have strong scent. In hot season regular bath and deodorant is good.
