a scary night

Last night about 11:00PM our hound started her hound sound, you know how hounds sound when they chase something. She was in her bed in the house and and there was no way I was going to take the big light and the gun to go see what she was upset about. It's just to dark out there and there are to many places something could hide. Needless to say no one got any sleep for about two hours, it took that long to get the dog settled down. We looked this morning but found no sign of any monsters out side. Does your dog ever do this at night? Do you go look?

Did I understand correctly that your hound was in the house howling? If the dog was not pawing at the doors to get out, I would wait for daylight myself. That is an awful sound though, especially if it is close by.

Hi Garden Gerty: Same hear, I think it's a horrible sound and that scares me, I mean, just think what's happening outside my dorr and what's making the dog act like this. I think it's beter to wait until next day. Thanks for your answer.

Oh Savy, I had one really scary night with my pup. It was during the Winter and about 8p.m. just before Roxy's bedtime. I put on her coat and we headed outside to the bottom lawn for her to do her business then straight back in for her to go to bed.
Well she took off, barking and snarling. Lol. My little Roxy. That terrier in her, you know. Well I freaked out because it was dark and she fled, fast into the buses below. All I could hear was her barking and branches crunching. Well Roxy is only 6.5 pounds so it was her crunching the branches. I finally got her retrieved!
I went back into the house, with her under my arm and grabbed the big spot light and went down to the bushes to see what it was that she was chasing.
To my surprise and while thanking my lucky stars that I had my pup safe in my arms, there was the biggest raccoon heading up a tree and another one on the ground ready to follow. They must of been at least 40 pounds. My pup is a lucky one. Sure was that night as the raccoons could of easily taken her for a late night snack.
I still shutter inside when I talk about this. I was really frightened for my pup when I seen those huge raccoons. I know that I am lucky and that that was one close call. Now when I take her out, if it is late and dark (not very often unless it is winter) I put her on a leash.
There have been times, at night when she has sat up in bed and started growling with a bark. I tend to heed her warnings as I am aware she has a super keen sense of hearing and she is an awesome watch dog, on duty pretty much 24x7.
Often times though it is simply a deer in the yard. Not worth getting up.
One night however, I had a very strange dream. There was a point where it was so not something I wanted to see and I woke. The strange thing is my dog woke too and was as upset as I was. It is like we were sharing the same dream.
Upon her waking, she just wanted to get down off the bed and go into the living room. Unlike her totally. But I let her down and went with her. She didn't want to go outside, she just wanted to go check things out. The other person in the house at the time was the main focus of the bad dream. Something bad happened to them and I felt she must of had the same dream too because she wanted out of the bedroom to go see if everything was alright, I assumed because after that, she was ready to go back to bed again. Strange but interesting.

I am glad that the few sheep in Malta are in farms and not in my area roaming around. Otherwise she would be howling and barking to let met take her out in the middle of the night:)

We don’t live on a property like you do and our dog sleeps in the porch in summer and in the laundry during winter. If she barks when she is outside we know that there must be something out there because she is not a dog that barks very much. If I am at home alone I will turn the outside lights on and look out of the window but I will not go outside; I have my neighbour’s phone number in case of an emergency if my husband is away for work. Of course if hubby is home he will brave it and check out the situation outside, that’s if he wakes up; he has been known to sleep through the house alarm!

He might be seeing a bad spirit roaming around. Of course, human eyes cannot see that not unless your gifted. But for me, I do believe that animals can sense unseen forces than we do.
I haven't experience a dog hounding that long, probably the longest would be 5 minutes. But I know that this is a bad sign since somebody from the neighbor is going to die or if not, something bad is going to happen.

Hi, savypat. I don't have any dogs, but I know many dogs that were just like this. They would bark when they would hear something. I used to live in a trailer park and when I would walk to check my mail, the dogs would bark like crazy. I was pregnant and the dogs barked at me, like I was going to harm them. Or I was a robber that was going to steal. It got on my nerves. But your dog had to have seen something in your yard. I am sure of it. I could have been a snake. Or a rodent of some kind. I hope that it was not a human or anything. I am glad that nothing seemed to be out of the ordinary or anything.

NO my dog doesn't do this... since we are living in the city... we don't have that kind of threats.. and also, my dog will sound only if any new person or unknown person to him.. since, we don't tie him up during night time.. so, it will take care of those thing... we don't want to worry about it...

dear pat,
i would be scared. dogs really have very keen sense that even little sound from outside would make them make their fur stand up and then bark.
my dog does that too. and to make her settle down, i have to call her and let her sleep just below my bed. i feel safe with her near too.
happy mylotting,
ann

I have a German shepherd dog who would bark late in the night. There is regular prowler around our area who tries to steal whatever is left out in the open.My dog would bark late in the night and a neighbour reported he saw a man wandering late in the night. One night out of curiosity i got up with my torch and as soon as the dog barked i focussed it on that area. I found that there was a rodent who went into a water tank which was partially open. But this was only false alarm as my neighbour informed to having seen a grown man walking past his yard.I can say you had a scary experience as i regularly hear complaints and have at times heard footsteps beside my bedroom at night.

Wow that is really scary... It happened here before, there was somebody on the roof. Trying to get inside the house of our neighbor, it scared us badly because we are hearing the footstep always at night. My dog barks too.. Honestly we don't know which house is his target... All we did is to check and make sure that the doors and windows are all lock and secured.
We did not go out but texted our neighbors for the to be alert too.. We have barangay tanod or (acting security in our village -- in english), we also called them to check the roofs. We only went out when the tanod is already there and said that it is safe to go out.

Our walker hound will ocassionally bay at night. She hears something outside and will start barking. My husband usually gets up to see what is making her bark and tells her to be quite. At that point she will normally get back on the couch and go back to sleep. I do remember her doing this one night a few years back and when my husband told her to settle she just kept on barking. I got up and went to check and all I could see were red flashing lights out front of our house. Now mind you that is not unusual because people fly on our road and there are often wrecks and everything else. But this night the little church on our road had caught fire and it was the fire trucks and emergency vehicles. Needless to say no one slept that night because she would not stop barking until the trucks left. We certainly do not worry about monsters getting in the house with her there. So as long as they are outside no worries. LOL

Our girl is a walker hound also, but she's a blond, so there must be some mix there
we got her as a rescue. She is very aware of anything different around the ranch, we can't always tell what and I won't let her out even in the daytime I'm afraid what might happen if she met up with a big cat or a bear.

So sorry you had such a busy night. First thought that came to my mind is why dont you have any lights on during night all around your house?? We're told its the best way to keep robbers away.
My dog does bark at times, mostly when we're up and every time he did, it was because something was going on outside on the street or at a neighbor's. It never happened as of yet when we're asleep but if it did, Id be looking out the windows to see if theres anyone around the house (our lights are on) then Id go around the house, to make sure nobody is INSIDE the house but before Id do all that, Id make sure to grab a baseball bat and a long kitchen knife lol.
Dogs bark as they can hear sounds we cant. They also have a keen sense of smell. It could have been someone out there but it could have been an animal also. I tend to listen to my dog when he's barking as he's not in the habit of doing so.....dont we have dogs to "guard" our houses!!

Something had to be outside for your dog to be all worked up about. My dog has barked in the middle of the night scaring the heck out of me. I usually get up to check the doors and windows to make sure everything is ok. I wouldn't go outside either because its just to dark. What my cody usually does but thankfully not every night is start to pace the floor, back and forth in the hallway. I then get up to make sure he is ok put in back to bed and make sure everything else is secure. There are times he needs to go out to do his business in the middle of the night but that is very rare thank God. I will let him out and luck the door till he is ready to come back. I'm glad you didn't see anything unusual this morning when you went to check.

Hi savypat: Sometimesmy dog hounds and as you felt it's a scary situation because, in those cases you asked yourself in your bed if there's anything scary right in yourhouse... maybe a thief. But in my case I've never checked what's going on outside, because i'm too shy! Thanks for asking me this question. Have a nice day.
Alvaro.

There are also some times that dogs really bark a lot at nigh- and it doesn't help that there are many dogs around here. There was also this one time that a group of dogs were really noisy and just barked nonstop-they sounded quite angry but I didn't dare take a look though..afraid of what I might find..
