Okay, Oliver is just weird. He likes green olive juice (brine?) The roomie is having to fight him off whenever she eats them. He'll lick her fingers, and shove his nose into the jar! What on EARTH makes a cat want OLIVE juice? He'd probably eat them if he were offered!

Cats sometimes acquire weird little cravings. I once had a cat who loved raw green beans. Whenever I was preparig them, she would hop up on the kitchen table and go crazing stealing them from me and gobblng them up. When she had kittens and they were old enough, they hopped up also to see what mom was so crazy about. They looked at the beans & sniffed them and then looked at their mother as if she were insane. Apparently her craving was not passed on.

I do not know. I have a cat that likes refries and salsa. Go figure. It may be that there is something in the olives that he needs. I would give him one. Of course yesterday I gave our cats ham salad with carrots and pickles in it. They ate it all gone.

yup-it is the brine. one of my prior cat's biggest idea of a treat was a little olive juice on a piece of white bread.this is the same cat who rang the doorbell to come in,so he was a bit odd LOL

ahh, and you know, the smell of olive brine (and beet juice for that matter) can turn my stomach really fast - its like - let me deal with it on an empty stomach so I don't throw my dinner up... the roomie pours off beet juice, but it always seems to end up in other things - I'm really going to have to tell her to not just pour it in the sink, but to make sure its in the drain hole!

My oldest cat, Simba, likes to lick mustard--and mangoes! He jumps up on the table every time he gets a whiff of either one and starts nosing in. I have never been able to figure out why he has these peculiar cravings. We have had Simba since he was a small kitten, so, like your cat, he didn't develop the cravings elsewhere. (He's 14 now). It's bizarre, but funny, too.

Animals like lots of weird things we don't think they would. My dogs love pickles, which when I get White Castles I don't ask for the pickles to be left off. Gus adores broccoli and squash while Cookie likes broccoli but not squash. They both love pumpkin. Cookie like oranges, Gus likes pineapple, olives and apples while Cookie will almost kill for cauliflower. Weird animals are all around us!

really, no idea why they go for some things, but I'm glad most of my cats are only interested in NORMAL things!

LOL, I agree oliver is wierd. Maybe it's because olive is part of his name, i'm kidding. My dog loves people food but have never given her an olive, lol.

I agree that Oliver is weird. I'm glad that our cat won't eat anything but his vet prescribed dry cat food. The last bag cost me $50.00, but that's for 20 lbs.

Hi there ElicBxn I was a bit worried at the start of discussion but then as I read on I was releived to see that you were talking about a cat and not a child haha. I thought that brine was just salted water?

Well I would say it was salted water then as salt is often used to preserve certain foods

I had a cat that loved Petroleum jelly. I gave it to him to help with fur balls and he loved it! He would just lick it off my fingers. Usually you have to trick cats and put it on their fur so they will lick it off. Not him! He also loved grapes and yogurt. Anytime I ate either of them I had to share with him! There is a certain brand of yogurt that I couldn't buy, because he couldn't stick his head in it. I could never understand why he went crazy for certain things. I guess there is something missing in their diet that makes them crave certain things.

Why do you say to be careful of the grapes? Are they bad for them? I guess I can see the yogurt as it is made with milk, but what is in the petroleum jelly that they like so much?

Hello Never knew cats like oliver, but only think i know, the cats here in my country are very fond of milk, fish, meat, even eggs, i don't have any pet cat but two stray cat enter our kitchen like a flash and drink the milk even when it is on the stove, they eat the cooked curry too.. Thanks for sharing. Welcome always. Cheers. Professor

I can understand all of those - tho most of our cats around here aren't as fond of eggs as you'd think, and I'd guess the curry has meat in it... I even see some of the other things I've seen crazy cats go for, but never have I met on that eats olives - I read about one, but the story teller was talking about a kitten she found that was starving and ate olives one time...
