I am the most unpatriotic person...

Because I cant stand the fact that we have a minister who has more than 6 children and he doesnt remember the sequence of their birth and tends to forget their names..we cant have a good population control policy because of this man!!! I feel ashamed of the fact that we are contributing to the world's undesirable population, effectively increasing the cost of food across the world and making more people poor, I feel ashamed of the fact that our industrialists are forced to resort to underhand means to survive as industrialists.. the sequence goes like this, we have too much of population, so we have more demand and less supply, which makes any good or service profitable, effectively giving good returns to business, but the business has to get a license, and to get a license the licensing officer expects some greasing of palms. After all, he has more choice as well. Most industrialists have become experts at greasing palms. But - to be fair - the Industrialist is patriotic because he is preventing foreign goods from entering the country, effectively saving hefty sums of dollars for my country. He also keeps people employed so that they dont get time to reflect on whatever is happening. This means politicians are not thrown out of their seats rapidly. He might be saving these people from committing suicide for all that I know. Because if they realize what a no win situation they are in, and the bleak future that awaits the future generation, they wouldnt want to live! He also exports goods and brings in foreign exchange. I was told Nano is an indigenous car. But after a couple of Nanos burst into flames, I realized that indigenous cars can have foreign parts. I feel ashamed I didnt know that! And oh - it was again a petrol/ diesel car! My country doesnt have enough petrol or diesel, why do we need a car that guzzles up fossil fuels when we can have two wheelers that give more than double that mileage? Is common man's desire to own a car more important than the forex problem because of petrol/diesel? Rise in demand for petrol results in higher petrol prices, and consequently rise in prices of basic necessities!!! I thought we were patriotic enough to understand that. I am impressed with the man who gives licenses for such thing. Especially the man who passes laws that says old vehicles should be scrapped after 15 or 20 years service, without a proper place or system to dump them or recycle them. I was reading about All Quiet on Western Front. I realized it is easy to talk about patriotism when my life is not in the line of fire. The truth about patriotism is completely different from what I understand or what the soldiers in that movie understood. I dont know if acknowledging flaws and starting to correct them would be patriotic or looking at other achievements while underplaying flaws would be more patriotic. For now I prefer to be unpatriotic because I am honestly so confused. (Sorry about the long post) Post script - I apologize in advance to people whose sentiments are hurt with this post. I also want to know if anybody else here feels it is ok to highlight the mistakes that their country is making or their countrymen make.

I have no problem as an American looking at my government and saying 'Wow... this is messed up.' Then again I'm considered poor in my country and can't even qualify for any type of government assistance unless I become pregnant. What kind of crap is that? but its the world we live in. There's really not much people can do about it unless they band together.

People have been systematically divided, so that they cant band together. It was priests before, it is politicians now.

So true. But honestly, people have always been divided amongst themselves. even if we all looked alike, make the same ammount of money, had the exact same houses, cars, pets, everything... People would still find a reason to hate. Its just how they are.

Do take extra2 care . . I just don't understand the rising prices of some stuffs. Here too , prices are only going up , but not going down ever. Maybe you can give some to your maid, Aunt V .. The price of fuel here is ever rising at times .. it should go down , down and down..

We've a policy - that is in our house. We always feed maids. They get to eat whatever they want - along with us. They eat and drink in same vessels. There is no differentiation unlike in other households out here. They dine on same table as well. This is the reason my maids dont leave me - at least I think this is the reason. But I am glad dad does not object to this. I give her Zed. It is cold, so I gave her monies to buy slippers. She chose to spend it on her grandchild's clothes instead. She feels she can wear those slippers in my home, but will not be allowed to wear them elsewhere. So they wont really serve the purpose! So I gave her dad's old socks since the flooring at home is marble, and it can get really cold in winters. She is quite happy with that. :) At times I think they are satisfied so easily, that is what is wrong with them.

I'll make that one Zed. :) Yeah, we need it... was really... bought onions at 50 rupees a kg, and tomatoes at 40 rupees a kg. Painful because onions were just 20 or so a couple of weeks ago, and so were tomatoes. I can afford it, my maid cant. They'd get diseases like tuberculosis if they cant. And they would pass it on to us. Net net, we are helpless.

Three reasons why you are patriotic. Since you criticize for the good, it makes you patriotic. Since you still stick around and not runaway for "Better" life,it makes you patriotic. Since you have analyzed the situation out of your concern, it makes you patriotic.

Hello Vannie. Never apologize for stupid toadies running a country. I hate this lot and they know it. I know i can do better than they ever can. Unfortunately we have to live according to them. This one has a lot of children, i don't even think he know their names. Anyway, we have a lot of price hikes here, but that is due to this lot striking and destroying everything. Petrol and diesel gets expensive as they pocket each cent they can lay their hands on. We have a nice 77 million rand scandal. Awesome if you think about it. They throw a 26 million rand party. And for what i ask you. When more than half of their own people suffer without food and places to live then they expect us to pay for it and help them. Not likely. More than stupid toadies. We cannot apologize for them as the world know they are freaking stupid. My rant, thanx. TATA.

First and foremost, it is not as easy to fix the government. But the whole system has got rotten because of our lopsided demand supply situation, and we still dont want to correct it, because we have this Hindus and Muslims trying to compete in terms of numbers...

I agree with you to an extent. But i dont think you are unpatriotic since you think about your own country so much. There are selfish people like me who study in India and then work abroad without contributing much for their country. But we cant help our country , can we?, when its ruled by bunch of shameless people who are afraid to arrest a thief minister doing a scam of 1.76 lakh crores of rupees.Respectable Agriculture minister is not ready to give food to poor for free even if it is destroyed due to improper storage facilities.Over that we have an opposition party who always opposes even if its important nuclear deal which can ensure enough electricity production to fulfill the need of common people. Many more examples like these.Sorry for being cynical, hope we get sensible leaders and corruption free system so that we can eradicate the tag of DEVELOPING COUNTRY which is with us for more than 60 years now.

I Vandy, solemnly swear that the US is responsible for the population problem in India, and all other problems that arise directly or indirectly from it. This is because as long as the US keeps its doors open for people from our country, our folks are not going to worry of lack of jobs. People remain optimistic that there are jobs in the US or Australia or the UK. You all are responsible for cultivating that false sense of security in our people, and giving our folks a feeling that it is ok to breed irresponsibly. Ok - end of rant. :) Frankly yes, your government needs to gets to its senses. :)

I forgot to mention - the vegetable vendor from economically weaker section got his house under a free scheme from government. :) Sweetie, we do need a system in place so that average person doesnt have to incur so much. You and me belong to a different class. It doesnt mean most people do. I have a watchman who cannot afford a single set of new clothes, even though he has only one child! We do give him monies for clothes, but his wife is unwell, and costs of vegetables are really high. The son is at growing age. Whatever they can spare, they use it for educating and feeding the son better. Which means the man's only been managing with old clothing for the last six years. Can we imagine a life like that? The boy needed uniform till recently. Growing age. You know how fast they can outgrow. You wont believe where they sit and study. I feel grateful to god for all that I received the moment I see that kid. The least god could have done was see that the old couple dont skip meals to feed the kid. Ocassionally, I send food down. There are ample well to do inmates in our complex. Each one has a car. But nobody wants to increase the pay of the watchman. 3500 per month is not enough to feed, cloth and educate a child! Government concessions help, but they dont know where to get it from. We dont have time to help them with it. That sweetie is the harsh truth. Not car. :)

fjaril - I quite forgot about pollution - thanks sweetie... We dont have a residential area and a business district out here. So it should be fairly simple for everybody to get their requirements. People are lazy! I am not as mature as you would think. I get to see the life of my watchman and his family like an open book. They cant close the door of their room, which is just opposite the lift entrance. A thin curtain is all that gives them some privacy. Everytime I pass by, I do give them something. But I know I am not doing enough. I can only support part of the kid's education. He feels so grateful for that little help that he comes rushing at me to carry any vegetables that I bring in. I feel so ashamed fjaril! I keep wondering where I can cut down more for such people. The divide is simply too much. You just know of 3500 family, and at the other end is 80000000 per month family. Yesterday I gave about 7000 donation to HelpAge. This year we have a cold wave, and this organization is trying to round up elderly from street and give them some comforts. Volunteers asked me to introduce them to my neighbors. I normally donate annually. So I did that. Neighbors have a car bigger than mine, and their earnings are twice mine. But they didnt consider even 500. Makes me wonder if French Revolution would be repeated in India.

Hi Vandana, There are many more that could have been written here... Yes, we are reaping the seeds that were sown ages before and there seems to be no way out as of now. The whole system is going wrong and all we can do is sit back and watch... hoping (or without hoping) for something to happen and get us out of this mess. Unfortunately, nothing would change automatically and nothing would happen for good as long as we dont shed the power and lust and greed for Money, Power. As long as there exists poverty, illiteracy, ignorance and apathy (towards the system) nothing else can happen and it is going to be this way. In your discussion, I find you more patriotic as you need some way out to fix these which could be possible if many thought and acted in a more sane way. I appreciate your rant(as you call this).

Ajay - Tata is not so wrong - when he starts petrol car. His object is to reduce our dependence on foreign makes, effectively saving the country some precious foreign exchange. But the whole point is, it is such a temporary fix. He doesnt have enough monies to offer latest technologies at affordable rates, and government has no monies because it cant manage to feed, clothe, and shelter this kind of population. Effectively, most people are grabbing whatever little they can before the inflation whirlpool starts sucking them in. We desperately and urgently need to frame policies on population. If only educated class would start looking at it...

Ajay, even Reliance is not a bad guy. In fact, I think none of the industrialists are. They are just badly trapped into the system. It is like... you want to do so something like that... you have no choice but to go this way. Feel sorry for them all because eventually they are the ones that provide employment, keep people and families fed, clothed and sheltered. They start bribing with the Availability of name, did you know that? They've to confirm from the Registrar of Companies office whether the name that they want to give to their company is available or not. Even the peon in that office accepts bribe. Ask any Chartered Accountant, and they will let you know. If you dont pay the monies, the concerned clerk would become too busy to take your calls or attend to your needs even if you visit them 365 days. In the Income tax office, they say the file is missing. You are finished after that. You have to keep on running between one department to another. To top it all, there are internal politics in each office. Therefore, if an officer favors you, his rival will take cudgels against you. You would be bled so badly to get him to sign papers. Those who have been there, done that - like me - really know how filthy the system has become.

I agree, Tata is far better than Reliance and other companies. they think about country as well. As you said, nano is not a long term plan for common man, perhaps Tata wanted every indian to drive a car which is not very costly but that is just a temporary plan. Population is a BIG concern, they day might come when selling of Car might get banned necause of no of cars on the road, how may lane would you construct? There is not much land left for Agriculture because of ongoing home construction and if we consume land in roads that will again reduce land for agriculture.

I think as an educated person, just one person should stand up and say - here I have all the flaws, I have bribed, and I have lousy temper, and I can be mean, whatever. Whatever the press will feed you with. But I have only one objective...reduce population of the country and change the gear back to prosperity. Give me just a five year term and if I fail hang me publicly so that nobody else ever dares what I dared. Feel like standing up like that professor.

Gaurav - the prognosis for India does not look very good at all. I mean China is going down and down, but India will be there faster, and for much longer, thanks to the population and the lack of political will to control it. In fact, I am of the opinion that even if we take stern measures now, we might just not make it. There are many people who believe that India is still shining. While they are experiencing and enjoying the efforts of software folks, the fact remains that it is not a permanent thing. A blip here and there and we will be down like pack of cards. Those who dont want to believe this and are too optimistic of India's future will not join with us to fight corruption and population debacle. We remain divided, as we always were.

WOW...Vandana, absolutely superb informational "rant" as you call it..But, after reading the entire discussion....I am plagued with ONE nagging question..Was the political corruption given birth about the time you became the "techno rats" (for the loss of a better word) for the Western World? So many of your statements are aligned with the "so-called" democracy of the Western world...your government is just learning our ways of corruption, we have been practicing it longer so it is NOT as blatant...but believe me, it's there! It's such a mirror image! Cheers!
