Today is crazy hat and hair day at the twins' school. Usually Naomi goes in with a hat, but today she wanted to do something with her hair. I was thinking of doing a bunch of crazy braids, but she changed her mind, and did the hat thing again. This time it wasn't just one hat though. First she put on her Gir hat (Gir from Invader Zim - look it up), then she put Cary's robot hat on top of that, and then she put her Asian coolie hat on top on that. She figures she's a shoe in to get her picture in the yearbook. Do your children have days like this where they can do fun things at school? Did you? About the closest I remember was in Junior High when the girls were actually allowed to wear pants. Whoo hoo.

Yes! I love that my daughter's school has fun days like these! Our school is very community oriented and I love how they try come up with cool events for the kids. We had a crazy hat day a few months ago. My daughter has a lot of hats, but nothing "crazy" - so we made one (the artist in me had to jump in on this one). I asked her what she wanted it to look like - and she said "cupcakes!". Well, I made a base for the hat, attached a colorful paper plate on top, and we made 3 fake cupcakes (with real cupcake liners) to go on top. It was a hit!! Kids, teachers and moms thought they were real cupcakes - ha ha!! But it wasn't a contest . . . the compliments alone made my daughter's day though. As for me, we were allowed to dress up for Halloween and have a costume parade like in 3rd grade - that's all I remember. Ha ha about you being able to wear pants . . . I remember in junior high we had a "shorts day" where we could wear shorts (shorts weren't allowed). Hope Naomi gets that pic in the yearbook!

Yeah and I didn't HAVE any pants except for a pair that was too short, so I wore them, but some smart azz had to make a nasty comment. Later that year, due to the fact that girls wearing pants did not result in a total breakdown of discipline, they changed the rule and we were allowed to wear them every day. At which point, I went shopping.... I hope Naomi gets in the yearbook too!

So did you have to wear dresses and skirts all the time before that rule change? I can't imagine wearing them on cold or windy days - brrrrrrrrrrrr.

Too cute! She had to have been a hit at school. My kids attended Catholic Schools and whoa, something like this would have had the nuns screaming. I remember when I first entered high school the full jumper was worn for gym, and it was the year that actual gym short were allowed. So I was amongst the first to wear the tacky gym shorts while many others were wear the jumper. EEk!

You'll have to come back and tell us how much of a hit she was. I am sure she was like all smiley as she entered the building.

She was probably embarrassed getting out of the car, Dearra was shouting at the other kids about the extraordinary crazy hat girl. Fortunately the bell had just rung, and none of the other kids were paying attention.

We didn't back when I was growing up but my granddaughter did have one like that a couple of years back. My daughter put braids in it and sprayed different colors on each braid...it was pretty funky!

hi dawn bet Naomi takes the prize at least for ingenuity. The Asian coolie on top of the others oh I can just picture. such fun.I sure do not remember any fun things much in high school as the Second World war was really dampening every thing. in senior year all the boys were talking draft and most of them were 18 so one by one they disappeared until we had only two boys left in our graduating class. They were four f. we did nothing fun but I do remember when we got to wear our own shorts in gym class instead of the pukey colored green gym suits one piece deals, really ugly too.My son went to private school but they had some fun times when they put on self written skits for us parents to watch. My son was dubed the talking computer as he fell in love with computers with the classes in computer science in the junior college where he took some classes across from his private school. All their skits were humorous and those children came up with some duzies too. Each child or pair of children got to take a bow after their skit to our applause. I think we parents had as much fun as the ch

These are beautiful days! I don't know about such things in the schools of my country. What a shame. Children love to make funny things. And - it's off topic, but this reminds me about my girl when she was maybe three year old. She was a very little thing but she had a crush for one of our friends. He was a good guy and was playing guitar. She was turning around him and one time she putted at three skirts one on top of the other. It was obvious that she wanted to be liked.

Oh wow! A crazy hat and hair day sounds like so much fun!! We didn't have any 'fun days' when we were at school. Being allowed to wear party clothes (instead of a uniform) was the highlight of the year. In college, we always had some special day or the other...a day to wear 'ethnic clothes'...a 'rose day'....etc. At the kindergarten I taught, we had special colour days when the kids had to wear clothing of the particular colour....or a rainbow day (which actually didn't make much difference because they didn't have a uniform). We have a Sand and Water play day twice in a year....and lots of hands-on activities and carnivals where they enjoy as they learn. The kids were also asked to wear ethnic clothes when we celebrated different festivals at school - green, red & white being the theme for christmas;boys dress up as Krishna and girls as Radha for Krishna Jayanthi(the god Krishna's birthday); ethnic clothes for Diwali, etc. We also have a 'Cooking with Mommy day' (no fire cooking) and special days with activities for daddies and also for grandparents. Another favourite with the kids is the 'Sing along with Mommy' (Fathers also welcome)...where the parents get to know the songs we teach at school.

I remember wearing a uniform since kindergarten but we didn't have any fun days then. The pre-activity centre I taught at didn't have uniforms for kindergarteners and pre-schoolers but the main campus of the same school had uniforms even for the younger kids.

Yes, they had crazy weeks or spirit weeks at the schools where my kids went. Also at the elementary where I worked. I think the stacked hats are a cute idea. How about Cory?

Cary was going to do something with his hair, but he hadn't done anything by the time we left home. I think he was going to do it in the bathroom whatever it was.

Girls allowed to wear pants? You must have gone to a school principalled by my grandmother. I don't think I ever saw her in a pair of pants except ONE time to garden in. The hats sound cute. I remember my granddaughter had pajama day which seems to have been short lived or she only did it once. I don't remember anything crazy fun in school.

What!? Wear pants? Private school? For us we had "Spirit Week" from elementary to high school every year and we'd have a theme like this. We did Wacky Wednesday where we mismatch our clothes and Twin Tuesday where we'd dress as twins with our buddies. There was also pajama day. And rival school dork day, where we'd dress up acting dorky as our rival schools. I don't remember the rest.

We had spirt week at my highschool and each day was a different theme. Pajama day, twinkie day (dress like someone else), etc... It was interesting that's for sure. I was never really into to but a lot of other people had fun with it.

We always had days like this for Homecoming week & Courtwarming week & other weeks during the school. I always joined in! I was big into school & pretty outgoing so I figured why not! We still have days like this at school & I'll most likely dress my boys up if they want to when they get that age!

Yeah, my kids have spirit days, and it's always something different. Sometimes it's being allowed to wear a hat if you bring in $1 for the PTO or something. Sometimes it's a tie day or something else. One time my oldest had a wacky day, everyone had to dress up all wacky. So he wore blue sweat pants, a yellow shirt, a red tank top over that, and his sister's headband on his head. This year, all the elementary kids got a free school shirt, donated by the PTO. Now they have to wear that shirt every Friday to show their school spirit. I think it's great they got the shirt for free.

My kids do spirit week at their school. One day is hat day and then there is crazy sock day. There is pajama day. I get a kick out of them. My oldest daughter has very long hair and one year we took a plastic Dr Pepper bottle and put it on top of her head. We pulled her hair up over top and put a ponytail holder at the top of the bottle holding her hair around it...lol...I want to say she looked like a character from the Jetson's but I'm not sure that's the right cartoon..lol

The closest thing my son's school has is just pajama day. But it's just a parade of pajamas with prints of the latest animated movies. They also have a red, white, and green day. That's when they come in wearing something with all three colors. These are big days for them, as they have to wear uniforms everyday. 3-hats-in-one, that's what I'd call crazy hat!
