Make hay while the sun shines.

This is an expression from our society that came out of the days when we were mostly an agricultural economy. We had to have hay to feed our livestock, and it would not do to cut it in the rain, as it would rot. It also was not easy to have enough light to cut the hay after dark, unless it was a fabulous full moon. Making hay now is more like getting things done. I have been 'making hay while the sun shines' for the last three days because we have extraordinarily warm and beautiful weather for this time of year. I have taken walks, gone to the zoo, done a lot of shopping and done a painting project. So how about you? How do you 'make hay while the sun shines'? Do you take advantage of the good opportunities in your life?

I make hay while the moon shines
I work the evening shift in an hotel. I see the televison and use the computer when I am there hence saving on my electric bill at home. No lights on six evenings a week at mine because I am at work in the evenings and at home in the day time.

I guess not all of the bigger ones allow it but where I am they do when it is slack. For example this evening there were hardly any guests and, once I had done the paperwork involved with checking them in and they had gone out for the evening, there was nothing more for me to do. So I take my netbook and use it suring those times.
In the week it is busier and the phone rings more often but I am still on to a winner

Hi MysD, we do not have any really big hotels here, and only certain times would they be really busy, things like graduation weekends and some local festivals. I would always want to have something to do. We are glad that you can be present here with us. Richnai, I am jealous. I think when I was small I could make a hula hoop go, but I cannot anymore. I guess I may buy a new one again to try to teach myself. I have seen some online that actually have weights on them and are made for fitness purposes. You go Papa Hoop

I have missed many golden opportunities in my life which I later regret for not taking advantage of the opportunities that knocked at my door. But that was gone and I believe I have reached a stage where I should not let opportunities slip easily anymore.

Oh, zandi my friend, me too. I hope to be doing better making hay while the sun shines now. Our past is truly gone, and we cannot do much about that except learn.

That would be very relaxing. There are many things that we need to do while the sun shines. Relaxing and catching some rays is one of them.

Oh, I will turn back into a computer turnip in a matter of days. My feet are telling me that the cold front is going through now.

I was thinking of some old sayings the other day and now, having a sieve for a brain, I can't remember any of them. How do I take advantage of the good opportunities in my life? I don't. Not in the Winter anyway. I tend to hybernate in the Winter, getting plump and lazy. Then in the Spring and Summer it takes me most of that to get my good attitude back. By then it is nearly time to start hybernation again. what a life!

I have some more, but thought I would save the discussions for next week, if it does not leak our of my brain. I find that I do better if I have lots of lights on when I am stuck inside for the bad weather. I would love to get a membership at the YMCA as I would use it, I think, and feel better all over. I love spring, but by about July the heat and humidity makes me into a real difficult person. If I could go to a pool everyday that would be better.

I so agree. YMCA would be nice. I used to go there but not anymore. Yes, July and August are too much for me.

Hiya GG,
Lets say that we have tried our hardest to make hay while the Sun shines in every way we could.
Sometimes it did work to our advantage somewhat and other time not at all.
Whatever we did do wrong we still tried to make the best of a bad situation and took it up to where we could and then finish the Job completely if we could.
When you have worked in Hotels like we have this is quite difficult to do as there are always circumstances hampering you be it People, or work situation whatever.
But at least we did try to make Hay while the Sun was shining.

Right now many people are having a hard time with things because of the economy. I understand that this is probably true of hotels as well. I hope you have some days that are bright and full of promise.

Hiya GG,
Hotels are suffering tremendously here at the moment I don“t know how it is England now as that is where we worked the main part of the time.
Thing is to make hay while the Sun shines with every opportunity that comes you way if you can that is.
Have seen a bit about People going through some really bad situations in America too. I hope you have some great Days too GG. Take care now. xxx

I get while the getten is good, at least I try too. I try to take advantage of nice days. Its just been so long since we had nice days. I just found out we have a possible blizzard heading our way. Don't want no part of that. Enjoy the nice days when you can. Take care.

And that is another way of saying the same thing. I know we have cold coming in, but not any moisture, I am afraid. We are heading towards a drought. Either that or we will end up with snow in April when the fruit is setting on the trees. stay warm.

I agree with the expression of the society while make hay while the sun shines. Its something to do with grass which we cannot do anything. Grass has to be used while it is sunshine to feed the cattles.

Yes, we have to harvest the grass for our cattle while the sun is shining. We also have to take advantage of our own opportunities while the time is right.

The first thing I am going to do when it gets warm enough and the sun is shining is to start spring cleaning. I start with the bathroom, then the kitchen and living room, hoping to get it done before Passover. Sometimes the weather cooperates and I get it done, if not, then at least the bathroom and kitchen gets done regardless..

That is a very good plan. I have to find certain times between cold weather and hot weather to do work up in my attic. I have some fabric and blankets and furniture up there, but only certain times of the year does it feel okay to be there. I love to be able to open windows and freshen up the house when the sun shines as well.

I'd like to have the whole house done sometime, but so far I never get past the living room before Passover is here. So, the bedrooms have to wait until afterwards..

It was a bit warmer today so the kids and I went out to play in the snow, shovel a lil more, and watched the kids make snow angels and sled down the front yard. Though thinking about this I really need to get stuff done indoors as I'd like to spend my warmer weather outside... but I always hate having to do stuff inside when it's soo nice out and it seems the warm weather only lasts a short time.

There has to be a good balance. i imagine that the kiddos will remember that you took the time to go outside with them more than they would remember that you did inside chores.

Snow ball fights are always fun as the snow is warmer it's packing snow now soooo why not? It would just be nice to not be the only one doing the chores unless company is coming then I could do other things.

I live close to my state's capitol which has a fabulous zoo but admission is $12 so I haven't been there since I was a child.
I make hay by doing surveys and writing and putting ALL that money in a savings account. I don't spend unless I have to. If all my income stopped I could still pay my bills for 6 months thanks to my savings account. Other than that my life is pretty dull--I rarely go anywhere or do anything because of this stinking economy.

We bought our zoo pass last year as a way to celebrate our anniversary. We both prefer that to gifts we do not need. With it being reciprocal we have also saved money when we have been visiting family and going to the zoo. I guess that is just a thing that my whole family has always enjoyed. I need to make some hay like you do. I know that the economy has taken a big toll on your income.

Hi GG,
I surely needed the sunshine some 10 days back as my bones were freezing due to the chilly weather.
There are some occasions that I can grab the opportunity coming my way... And If I am able to see the opportunity coming and if I can go with it, I try m best to get to it.

I have a frame for a tri fold stand up screen, and it is getting painted and the cardboard in it is getting a new cover to make an interesting screen to obscure some stuff I do not want to look at. I have had it for years, and it was old or antique when I got it. I have come really close to throwing it away a half dozen times, but if I can make it look neat, I have a use for it now. I understand about when you feel good you want to get a lot done.

YES...GG, I am of the vintage from whenst that expression begat...possibly even an older vintage...as haying was ALWAYS a marathon, and all our equipment was TRUE HORSE POWER (our Belgian team.."Dock & Molly") mower & rake, human & horse powered..and there was NO such thing as baled hay!
I truly try to make the best of each day...and when the day finds me under the weather, I do quiet things ( I had a 'bout of pneumonia early Jan.) so used that down-time to polish all my brass (and that is a feat, as I have been collecting forever!) Now, that the weather is miserable, I am catching up on all my sewing & mending, doing some re-upholstery, making pillowcases & duvet covers (from Thrift Shop sheets) as I need to re-do my bedroom! On agenda is doing a lot of tiling in my Rental Cottage, and new bed fixings for it, too! I find that having an agenda, visualing improvements...gives me the impetous to "make hay!" Take care and cheers! I love being frugal!

I spend way too much time on the computer. I have been known to do massive sewing projects, but it has been a long time. I wish you lived nearby, I would hire you for some reupholstery work. I had a friend who said he wanted the work, but never got back to me. I have a chair that needs the springs retied, then new burlap straps and then new upholstery. I bought upholstery fabric for my grown kids as part of Christmas as well. I have found a wonderful bargain site for the fabric. My two chairs are really great, they were old when I got them, twenty five years ago, and had fresh upholstery. They still look pretty good, but I always hated the color. Since the one chair needs re built I got new fabric as well. I have another bolt for some of my arm chair style chairs. I can redo those. It will be so pretty to get the new fabric on the chairs. My son has two he wanted redone as well, and he is living with me. It is funny my kids and I all have the similar taste in fabrics. You stay well friend and enjoy each new day.

Firstly, I am envious that you have your son at home....must be so nice, and I am sure your children got their good taste from their Mother! I actually learned my re-upholstery from a book with many trials and errors...but I am sure there would be on-line tutorials....and you are right, it is sooooooo rewarding when the project is complete, with a fabric you love.
Would you be willing to share your fabric site's name? When I re-upholstered our bigger boat two years ago, I was so upset with the prices for Outdoor/marine upholstery here in B.C., I went on-line and found Richport Supply and was flabbergasted...Here in B.C., "Sunbrella..8 oz. was $38.95 a yard..I needed 17 yards." At Richport, 12 oz. Sunbrella (much preferred)was $8.95 a yard, with a further 10% discount for over 10 yards. WHAT A DIFFERENCE! For T-shirts, shopping bags, drapes...etc; I use Dharma Trading...but do not have a good site for Upholstery!
We have 4 days of sun predicted, BUT it is well below zero at nite...so am really worried about my Garlic (Garlic is planted in the fall) as it is up about 6"!
My son & DIL love garlic too, so I grow for them, as well. My son rototilled the beds last fall...and we are just short of 900 plants. Yesterday in the sun, I weeded it all...and found that the dang deer had jumped the fence, ate some of it and just pulled lots out, and left on top of the soil!
I need to re-upholster my dining room chairs, so would really like a nice choice of fabrics. P.S. I hope you are making money with your time on the computer!
Take care...and Cheers!

Right now, it's getting to 13 degrees, up from 3 this AM. IF it hits 20 without wind, I might gas up my car. Mostly because I got a $20 for my bithday and my Price Chopper card says 40 cents I can take off per gallon.
Im sitting here freezing. I think I'll dry some clothes in my dryer and take a hot shower.
If it hits 30, I'll go scrape off tent catepillar scabs off my fruit trees, will that count?

I grew up hearing this expression and it meant the same thing. I love the old expressions and use them frequently. I am so happy that you have taken the opportunity to enjoy the unusually warm weather and it is great that you have done shopping and painting. Do you mean doing painting in the house? I need a lot done but we have not yet got started. All the white paint work needs refreshing badly. The third son is coming home from the U.K. on vacation early in February so maybe I can organise my three sons to have a work day

No, I had an object that needed painting, and I could have done it inside, but outside was better, less messy and it dried faster. The temperatures are falling tonight and by Tuesday we will be really cold again, but it is winter, after all. I may be posting some more expression related discussions later. I am enjoying being more active here with posting and not just responding.

Currently it is much too cold by me take my walks as I do during spring, summer, and fall. When it does get seasonably warm I took like to take advantage of the outdoors. I do not have outdoor home responsibilities anymore, as I know live in a building where as once I owned a home.
However, I do like to go visit friends and or spend time outdoors, as we have a park across the street. I enjoy going there simply to spectate the childrens baseball games and walk around to enjoy the time as the weather here is so crazy so I try to take advantage of it as much as I can as well.

Even as I type, waiting for a coat of paint to dry, the temperature is dropping, and it will be chilly long before it is dark. I love to look around the parks or even just see the neighbor kids out in their yards. I could have done this painting project indoors but it is much neater outside and I am not getting paint on any of the indoor stuff.
