Everyone on the streets appears to be busy in mobile phones.

Hi friends! Mobile phones have become part and parcel of day to day life. However, whenever am on a street, public transport, market, wedding halls, cremation ground or at a public place, I find many people indulging in long and uninterrupted conversation and in the process forgetting everything around them. I wonder what kind of detailed conversation do these people go in for? Do they remain so busy that they do not have time to talk to someone, when they are at their homes/workplaces. Majority of them are youngsters who are always seen glued to their mobile phones while they are walking, driving or cycling. Oh Gosh ! Is mobile has become so necessary for all of them that they cannot be without their it at any place? Please share your views and experiences.

Yes, I definitely know what you mean.. There was this girl texting in the public vehicle (the one I am also in); and she just passed by the place where she's supposed to stop- she got quite far since she forgot that she should go out already....That would be a long walk. I also am really caught up with texting or calling, but not to the point of forgetting the world.

Hi lady199! You have a very valid point to mention here that while texting/talking a girl forgot to alight at the right stop. These are the pitfalls of using cell phone at public places. Hope you would have learnt your lessons.

Though I agree cell phones are a necessity and a boon, I am not in favour of using it anywhere and everywhere. I find it hard to walk and talk .....because I can't pay attention to the things around me...especially in areas of safety. I don't have a landline and I 'chat' on the cell phone only when I am at home. If I am outside and someone calls, I will let them know I am out and will ask if they called for something important. If they've called to chat, I'll tell them I'll call later. This applies even to family members....the only exception being my dad ...when he calls on Sundays from Africa. But even without me telling him, he says he will call later when he realizes that I am not at home. I seriously cannot understand the need to be glued to the cell phone.

I'd rather stop walking or driving if it's an urgent call. I've seen a friend of mine who pulled over at the side of the road to attend a call and then continued driving. I think that's the safest thing to do. 'Walk and talk ' is not exercise unless it is done at home.

It would be safer to stop and listen to call and tell the caller that you are on the road. Walk and talk could prove dangerous while walking on a busy road.

Hi SV! You are doing the right thing that you do not talk, while you are outside. I also feel untill and unless it is very urgent or important call, we should avoid talking while driving or walking because taking the call diverts our attention.

Hi. dpk262006. Yes, I will admit that mobile phones are very popular these days. Many people are always on their cell phones. It is like this everywhere that I go to. Many youngsters enjoy chatting on their cell phone, it allows them to communicate with many people here and there. Cell phones are very popular for many people, both young and old.

Hi! I agree that cell phones are very convenient option to connect with each other, but should youngsters always be glued to their cell phones, even at public places? Thanks for sharing.

Where else can they find a place better than all the places that you have mentioned for whispering sweet nothings as they would be surrounded by strangers who would be least interested in wanting to know what they would be talking about. It could also be that they remember something important that needs to be attended to urgently and so what better way than getting it done through a mobile conversation!

Hi! No doubt about it that strangers are not going to listen to their conversation...... Lol! It means in a way you are supporting the way they converse at public places ? Anything to be conveyed urgently is understandable but reasons and basis for long and animated discussions on mobile are not easy to comprehend ?

Making a statement does not mean approving of it dpk!! As long as there is no ban on using mobile phones in public places there is nothing I can do to stop them

Agreed that you cannot stop it . However, if you make a statement, it will be construed that it has your tacit approval.

When I was younger..well, in my late teens when mobile phone started to become popular to the common people in India, I remember I like to use it in public places to 'Show Off' that I have a mobile phone. After that, it sort of become a bit of nerve thing. As in when I am in a mall or waiting for my friends, I use it as a timepass. It was useful tool to drive away boredom (though I could not use it much to call friends as that would have cost too much money in those days), I just use them for the games. Now, I don't like to use them unless I really need to. Sometimes I forgot it in my car, or in the bedroom. When I do remember to have it with me, I don't make calls unless absolutely necessary and pick calls that are important. I guess youngsters these days use them a a Show piece. Showing Off the newest models and such. Some could be using them like I did, to drive away the nervousness and boredom.

Hi Zrale! You have rightly pointed out that now a days youngesters keep flashing their mobiles at public places and keep talking to others as there is nothing left in this world, besides talking and talking . You are right talking to someone can at least help them reduce their bodredom and nervousness..It is interesting to read your own experiences that you used to 'show off' your mobile handset, when you were a youngester. Thanks so much for sharing your secrets and candid admission. Much appreciated.

Actually, with a lot of incidents of phone being snatched or one being help up with their phone as the primary target, i am now cautious of using my phone when i am on a public transport or when i am walking. I don't want to risk my life by flashing my phone thru my using it in a public place. Those teen-agers are really like that. They would send endless texts to their friends even if those friends will be met in a while when they get to their school.

Simplyd! Welcome again to my post. I appreciate your move not to pull out your mobile at public places, unnecessarily because there is always a risk of it being snatched.

It almost seems as if the phones have been attached to them. I do not appreciate getting to be a party to everyone's conversations everywhere I go. Sometimes I hear things that I did not really want to know.

Hi Garden! Yeah, sometimes it looks awkward that people are glued to their cell phones in parties and keep ignoring those, who are standing in front of them. Thanks for joining.

I only use my mobile phone when there is real need. Mobile phones have no doubt become the most important gadget in today's world but the usage of it should not be abused like talking while driving as many accidents happened because of non concentration while driving. The other thing that is quite annoying is talking on the mobile phone or sending sms during functions or public places.

Yeah, you are very right Zandi that mobile phones should be used judiciously and should not be abused because you can carry it anywhere. I dislike those, who talk while driving causing danger to others lives. Do you also come across scenes on roads, where you find that most people are glued to their mobile phones?

Its now illegal to talk on your phone while driving in my province unless you have a handsfree device. I find people are texting and on facebook all the time. Phones can do so much now. What I find rude is when I'm working as a cashier and a customer comes throgh and is talking on her phone and doesn't even acknowledge me.. just hands me there credit card and grabs the bag at the end still talking on their phone. So rude!!

I believe that we are getting too mad about using mobile phones. We are forgetting that basically these were meant to reach people while they are on move and not be a chatter-box stuff. Yet, companies too are promoting mobile phone usage with their friends and talk time plans and so on.

Hi deepak, lol it has now become very common to see people busy on their mobiles so much so that they seem to have all their social contacts through the mobile.Deepak, it is not just the youngsters, but others as well...I see ladies talking non stop while shopping for groceries in the super market and some men loudly asking about what to buy? I guess asking their wives to guide them !Even while taking a walk in the mornings ar evenings people are on their mobiles. I now avoid taking my mobile while I go for my walk because it becomes a distraction and I am not able to walk as fast.No doubt mobile is extremely useful and one would feel a little lost without a mobile , but normally I do not use it a lot....

Hi Kiran! You are very right that people abuse mobile and even for trifle and trivial information they keep calling through their mobile phones. Sometimes, carrying it becomes a kind of distraction, when it rings at the odd moment. It is good on your part that you do not carry it while going for morning walk.

Hiya dpk, Indeed yes. I find this every Day if you are going down a Street here you will find someone with a Phone glued to their Ear and they shout down it as well. Can it be that these Phones are turning us all stone deaf? Now the latest Phone here are where you can integrate your Identity Card in and it also comes Waterproof totally Waterfproof now. No more worrying if your Mobile drops in the Washing Up water or down the Toilet or in the Sea or Shower Water. Mobile Phone is a great thing to have but not to the extremes People go to here. A lot of People don´t have Mobiles still and the Phone Boxes here are going down the drain they hardly work. Apart from that a mobile Phone can be lots of fun used properly and not just to keep Phoning up your Family outside your House and asking them to drop you the Keys downstairs which they do a lot here. Do you think that is silly well I think it´s quite funny too really.

Hi Lovin! Yeah, people shout while talking on their mobile phones, forgetting in the process that others are around. I have not heard about waterproof phones. If it is so no doubt, people will be heard talking from their bathrooms and washrooms.. People abuse and misuse their mobile phones and as you have given the examples of keys, they do not show patience to go upstairs to collect the keys ..........so see life is so fast for them. Have a nice day !

You cannot do that here in the Philippines. There are a lot of scrupulous persons who could get them from you and running after them might be risky for your life. Me, i don't text while on public transport or on the street . I don't want to meet an accident while doing that.

Atleast fear of scrupulous persons prevents mobile holders not to talk on streets. You are wise as you do not text or talk, while at a public place and it is good to hear that you understand your safety.

The people who rattle off conversations in public seem to have no regard for those around them. It is especially rude in public restaurants, standing lines at merchant's, public transportation and other public places. I often wonder why they think that I'd be interested in their conversations. The kids that are doing it are missing opportunities to meet new people and learn from their environment. I have encountered the phone addicts everywhere. And I mean everywhere. I carry a phone to use in case of an emergency. I have no tolerance for the phone user who is talking and interrupting my peace when I am browsing in various stores or on public transport. It is rude in the highest degree.

Yeah, it is very true that talking loudly at public places shows that people have little regards for others. It amounts to rudeness while talking loudly at odd public places and disturbing others. It seems that you are wiser and you use your phone on need basis. Thanks for sharing.

I also see many people talking on mobile phones everywhere I go and sometimes I wander what they can talk about on the phone since there are people who talk for hours every day.Personally I like to be very concise when I use the mobile phone, and only talk about important matters,I couldn't spend hours chatting on the mobile and I think it would be a complete waste of time if I did such a thing, but if there are so many people who like to spend so much time with their cell phones,I can only wish them to enjoy it and have useful and entertaining conversations.
