I'm not trusting my internet service provider anymore!

I used to love my internet service provider but over the past few months, it has become quite the pain in the rear. It seems that every other day I come home from work...no service. Everything is from the inside..believe me...I know. Everytime I call them I have to go through the same modem/signal tests that they ask me to perform while they are on the phone. Then they have to always send someone out. Monday is the first day of my first online class ever. It is the only, as far as I know, online class required in my course. I am scared to death I am not going to be able to rely on my internet. If I can't, I'll be out $820!!!! I will not be a happy camper at all! They have replaced the lines from my house to the main lines and then they thought they found a problem in the main line itself. The service guy told me they thought they had it fixed now..I hope so but they have said that the last three times they have come out! Do you have dependable service or are you always worried? Did you trust your service at one time and then loose faith?

Well, all our ISPs here are a joke. We're charged so much but given less than minimal in terms of speed & also after sales service. I don't bother to listen to them asking me to go through all the "tests" as I tell them straight to their face I'm a technical guy & a big part I don't promote their services to clients is because of their lack of responsibility, wasting people's time & phone bill to "run tests" when it's so obvious that's just a "sedation" method their using to calm people down when it's their server problems or whatsoever, clearly the problem is from their side!~So the problem only gets fixed temporarily but the re-occurrence is 99.9%

Oo, how did water get into the line? Then again we don't have the four seasons here, only 3 like I mentioned, haha!~ So hot, hotter & hottest shouldn't have any water infiltrations problems, haha!~

We have had lots of snow and ice..lol...those seasons can be tricky characters. It has been warming up though and I think it might be condensation or something..I don't really know...but they are switched out now and so far so good..

I know! Everytime I have to go through the same routine with that darn modem and unplugging and replugging and what lights are on now....everytime they ask me to do the same stuff and someone still has to come out. I just wanted them to come out when I called. I am hoping by replacing all the outside wires that it will fix the problem..there was water in the line.

I am supporting my friend. Your internet service provider is looking not good. And "you would be out $820...", its not at all a happy thing. Coming to my internet service provider, I am using BSNL broadband, It is working in 33Kbps speed(I don't know the speed in USA). I am using this service from the past one year, I have faced the connections problems three times only...

Mine is a cable connection and when its on it runs pretty fast. They have been pretty good in the past but for the past couple of months I have had to fight with it..lol...I am hoping by replacing the outside lines that I won't have anymore problems. Thanks for responding.

Actully it has work in 100Mbps, but if it works in that speed, i can download a 1movie in just 10second. Assume this, how it is possible...

33Kbps??are you serious? I guess it is your pen slip. And I assume that it should be working in 33Mbps. Otherwise, you are unable to check out this website ,in that so low speed. Your 33kbps remind me to recall the years by dial(not ADSL) dated back to 1999.:)

Wow! I hate computer problems. When I was in the little one bedroom apartment this last summer I really had a problem. There were two lines coming into the house and one was the culprit. The cable guy changed the line and it worked great. The only time I have had trouble with my cable was when I was away from my regular apartment. Consistency is what I like. Do you have any other options? Hope this last fix was the trick.

I have the same thing. Sometimes these places actually need to listen to the customer. Hope it works for you. I was going to say that to be sure you could go to the library and use a computer there for the class. Atleast you wouldn't have to worry about it going skeewompis on you. But it could be a hassle too.

At this point I don't unless I pay for another provider...I am under contract because it is a bundle thing..phone TV and internet. The haven't had any issues out of them before this so I am keeping my fingers crossed. They replaced all the outside lines because they had water in them. It's about time..lol..I've been telling them forever it was something outside.

Hi dear, I think you need to have a thorough connectivity check and it is having certain problems. It still continues the issue, better to change. For me also, I used (Reliance Net broadband [India service]) connections with different instruments (plug & use) with higher prices and I didn't get the desired speed even though they demand higher speed. However, I changed the service provider suffering the financial losses as I purchased the same and once we stop the service they won't take it back. Now I changed Tikona, one other service provider. For the last 8 months I am using it and initially for the 2-3 times I had certain issues and for the last 6 months it is working fine and the charges are also nice. They have different plans and as per our requirement we can select it. I have taken the same with a speed of 500 mbps, 8GB free download for free for a month and above that will be get charged 10 ps. per sec. costing Rs 799/- pm. If you get better alternate service provider change to it and get the demo service. If you like it, go for a change, we need better service and not just a connection. Regards, Thank-s

You are certainly right about that. Customer service is sooo important. I will have to keep that demo service in mind..maybe request it. I don't know if they have that option here or not but it's worth a shot to find out. I have been curious about a couple of providers before. Thanks for responding and I hope you continue to be happy with your service.

I completely lost faith in my ISP, with my last episode. Granted the error started when a neighbor had his service connect with a different provider, who erroneously disconnect my line. Then my ISP left me for 4 days without. After I continually gave them pieces of my mind the send me someone who connects me to the competitors ISP service. It took the full nine days and I still do not find my internet running as it use to. I can't switch mine as my building will only allow the one I have. Can you switch yours? If not, then have a plan B in mind, like a near by hotspot where you can use it for free on pressing exam days. McDonalds has free wifi, and so does Starbucks. Only problem is that it is always noisy and busy so at times no where to sit. Best of luck Jen.

I actually thought about you and your turmoil too when I started this discussion. I thought about the fact that there are people that make their living online and how a couple of days can be very serious. I am actually under contract for a while longer. I can change after that or pay the early termination fee. I loved my service before this. I don't expect them to be perfect but I would have liked them to have fixed it the first time they come out. They have given me a two day credit and I hope they have fixed it but right now..I don't trust it. There are some hotspots around here...great advice! The library here has wifi and it's pretty close to where I live...maybe that will be my plan B..lol..I think the mall has a hotspot too but all I would want to there is window shop or spend money..

This last time they come out it had actually come back on before they got here. I told them that I couldn't have it going off and on again like that under the course pressure. They give me a two day credit but in all honesty I've been without it a lot longer than that on and off. They found water in the lines outside so it was a pretty big fix. I hope they got it all. Thanks for responding.

JenInTN, I know how you feel. While I didn't have problems with internet during most of my online classes, it did happen once to me (back in 2008) when I was taking a class while working in China. The internet cable was cut following an earthquake in Taiwan. Not quite the same thing you are talking about, but I guess I'm sharing that so that you know that I'm not just talking about nothing. As far as your class goes, if you are not able to access the internet at home, would you be able to go to the public library a couple of times a week in order to get the assignments, save them to a memory stick and then work on them at home? I have had to do that at times and while it is a hassle, it would keep you out of trouble. There are ways around problems like that but sometimes you just have to get creative. Good luck with that!

VisonTech, I don't particularly like companies that say they are going to fix things and then don't do it. I think most online schools expect you to have a backup plan in case there is a problem at home. That was the main thing I was addressing. I guess I should have said that. I agree the company needs to fix the problem AND reimburse her for her troubles!

I have actually considered a backup plan and the library was it..lol...I did not enroll in an online program but this particular class happens to be so. I think they have it fixed now...water in the lines outside. They came yesturday and worked on the lines that support the area. Thanks for the input and take care.

Thats actually a good idea. But seriously there are hard on people when they get behind on payments and plus they are charging you to use airwaves. Thats good advise to keep your grades up and not lose time, but the company still either needs to fix the problem or reimburse her for her troubles.

GOOD GRIEF, that is ridiculous. I know u are very aggrabated i would be to. I imagine i would have already shown my ugly disposition. I hope u told them about your class. I would also tell them i would expect them to pay if u have trouble. Sounds like it may be time for a change. I use to have trouble w/one i had but i changed & it has been pretty good except when they had the floods in nashville i had to do w/out a few days. I understood at first but got pretty aggtravated w/thyem before it was over with. I'm not very nice when i can't use my computer. Good luck, hope everything goes well w/your class.

I was not feeling very nice either when I called them again. I have been super patiant and it wasn't a huge deal until I found out my nest class is online. They give me a two day credit but that was just because I was fussing about the class and the fact that they had already been out a few times. I do hope I don't have to worry about it anymore and I hope yours is fixed now too.

Hello jenin, that was also my problem before but we have different internet provider since we are from both different country. In our country, there are only two competing internet providers. I've tried them both but I came again to the first one compared to the second one. In your case, I think you have to look for another good one. Before cutting it off, ask your friends about it..seek advise and ideas what's the best in your area...As of now, for me, I am contented of the service of my recent internet provider... Good luck my friend in your searching...and thanks for responding... Mobhomeir here..

On our place we have two big companies with two different services they offered...the one with package internet and home phone and the other one is only internet because not via cable but only a signal just like our mobile phone. The problem with this service is when we experience bad weather. Connection interrupted resulting to slow to no connection. I am using this kind of service because the other service they offered was already full. But in general I am satisfied with their services...Hope as you read this you already have good connection.. Have a nice day... Mobhomeir here..

Over the years there have become more and more choices for service in the area. My service is a "bundle" that includes phone, cable, and service. It is also a contract which will bind me for a bit more time. To be honest, I have been with this company for quite some time and this is the first real problem I have had. There has been outages for very short periods..weather, accidents, stuff like that can cause problems but this time it's been on and off for a few months.I think they have got it fixed now because they replaced a bunch of outside wires but we'll see...lol...Take care.

Where I live (up against the mountains about 15 miles out of town), we don't have cable/fiber, so we rely on wireless. After being with one wireless provider about five years, I finally gave up and switched providers last year. The system was more down than up and the technical support kept dwindling until you couldn't reach them anymore. Since I've switched, it's been better. We still go down once in awhile, but they're usually pretty fast about bringing us back up. I'm not very happy, but happy I switched. I live on my computer and I need internet. I'm not sure what I'd do without it?

I was wondering if that satellite would be a better option. Considering the mobility and all. I really don't take my laptop anywhere so I just stayed with the cable thing. I can see why it would be so important to you too. People depend on you for their presentation material and you need your extra income. Alot of options have been opened up with the net and to take full advantage we have to have service. Thanks for responding.

That sounds a lot like my service.Everytime I have a problem I have to call them and be on the phone going through the long process of signal test, unplug things, plug them back after 5 minutes, restart my computer, and then go through the signal things again and then it still won't work so they send someone out or after going through all of that process they tell me that it is on their en. One time they had to come out and they said it was the wires so they didn't get new wires they just cut where they thought it was bad and added to it .Not many days later the same thing happened so they just touched the wire because they said that it loosened up. My husband talked them into changing the wire because he was mad. we had to wait for them to come out to fix it which was days and then found out that the connection was loose and will probably happen again. We've had nothing but problems with ours though. Yours wouldn't happen to be Hughesnet would it?

ISP providers are really a pain probably because of too many subscribers which cause traffic somewhere - sometimes i experience down server and it will take me several calls before they could finally restore particularly just when i need it most with my online job.But I still trust the service that i get coz i always get special consideration everytime i call for repair and my 1.5mbps speed has been consistent since the start. :)

Don't go with clearwire thats just torment. They shut down every night for "maintenance" around 3:00 am to like 5:00 am, and the way it worked for me was I had phone and internet so if the internet went out so did the phone! except I didn't have another phone so I couldn't call, so I would drive miles to my moms to call and they just said, they couldn't trouble shoot the problem unless I was right there with the modem... Of course I would say, "how am I supposed to do that when my phone doesn't work either"? and then they would just try to send someone out, usually Mon. Needles to say I didn't renew my contract.

Well, back when I was living in the Condo, we always seemed to have some problems with Comcast, and the wiring and had to always call them until they proved it was bad wiring and got permission to fix some of the main wiring for sure. They even said it was horrible but since their was a Condo association paying most of the Bill since they provided Free cable their hands were tied to how much they could really do. But since we bought the house we are living in now for a yr. and a half, we have actually been quite lucky, and I have only had major issues once. I am Sorry to hear you are having these issues and hope that things are working better for you now.

I've been through the same thing myself. I was having all kinds of problems and had to have a service person out about 4 times. Finally, I got someone who really knew what he was doing and he fixed the problem, which turned out to be several poor quality connectors in the lines under the house in the crawlspace. But having to go through the hassle of calling in multiple times, going through the automated phone system, then getting the automated customer service person who runs you through the same script every time, is just extremely frustrating. After I complained so much they did give me a credit on my bill but I didn't really care about that. I wanted the internet service to work! It's so frustrating to have the internet drop out right when you are in the middle of something (like posting a response to MyLot! ) and then wondering if the information was lost or not and wondering how long it will take for you to get service back. Luckily, I haven't had any major problems since and my service has been fairly dependable. I sure hope it stays that way.

It is frustrating and like you...I just want the service that I pay for. They give me a two day credit, but if it just works, they could keep it. I think this last guy knew what he was doing too. He replaced the cable outside that he said had water in them and actually had to call a crew out to do the ones that supplied the neighborhood. I am hoping I won't have to go through the same drill in a couple of days..lol...thanks for responding.

For me the story was the opposite. When choosing an ISP I've come among a few choices. The best one available was out of reach, they send me a technician to tell me they can't lay the cables for the service. The second choice was too troublesome in digitalizing the phone line for the ADSL. So I came to the worst name around, the choice was easy because they are affiliate with my phone company so arrange the lines would not be any problem. The service is famous for being bad, most times down and with very low speed. But with the line already properly configured with them it would be easy for us to change it afterwards if things go bad. The story is that a year after putting it, we've got very few downtimes and speed according with the plan we payed. So far I'm quite happy with them, even with that bad fame they have.

That's great to hear. Sometimes places are misrepresented and can be the best choices. They are working harder to gain respect and customers. I have actually had a great service with thise company up until this point. Now I guess I wonder when I will be without again. So far so good though...I might even trust them again in a little more time. Thanks for responding.
