land, and where would you want it to be? Why?
I would want 100 acres. I would want meadows, fields, a small swamp, a little river, woods, esp. trees with nuts and fruit as well as berry bushes. I'd want a small cave and a little knoll. I would want it to be near my home in Northeastern NY State, near enough to be able to walk to it.
In each of the above areas there would be different kinds of food. I could forage enough for my family and then sell some stuff, too.
Your turn. Have fun with this.

I'd prefer only a few acres, maybe 10 at the most and on the edge of the plains, where there would be live water and some trees, but lots of open spaces and a good view of the mountains. I would live on it, of course, in a very simple and small house, just big enough to do the things I enjoy. It would be cool to have a hand pump on a good well and a wood burning stove. Gardening and foraging, and a few neighbors close enough to barter with but not close enough to pay attention to what I was doing. That would be perfect.

That sounds nice. Pretty even. I think you'd have to barter, Plains Indians were nomadic for a reason. With gardening, you could have more food to add to your foraging. Hand pump would be nice and a wood burning stove a necessity. Edge of the plains and ?

So you've already been to that location, in general, I mean. Cool.
I'd like to have someone to barter with, too. No matter where you are someone has things that you need.

I would want to buy near Guthrie, Ok. because that is where my brother lives. I would want no more than ten acres, with a stream, a good house and garage, and some storage buildings. I would like fruit and nut trees, but I would also want a clear enough space for a good garden.

My brother is north of the Urban Sprawl (OKC). My grandparents had 160 acres in southeast Oklahoma, but that is not large, really. They had cattle and a wonderful garden as well as lots of ornamental plants. My brother just recently bought a home so he will have a place when he retires from the pastorate, and it is on two acres, on top of a hill. The previous owners had about six storage sheds/workshops on the property. Between Guthrie and Edmond it is nice to drive along and see trees and things, not just roads and businesses. The people are not too snobby about barns and sheds that need repair. Where I live now they get a little uppity.

So you know a great deal about this area because of your brother and grandparents.
160 acres is getting to be a lot of land here. So many people buy a hundred acres and sub-divide it into a subdivision (do-it-yourself-suburbs).

Clear enough space would be the fields.
I have 10 acres, but it's mostly young woods and swamp. Lots of Jewelweed (spotted touch-me-not is it's other name).
But a better 10 acres, you could to a lot more with. I have one workshop and my husband loves that. Would your husband want a workshop? Many men do. No garage. A barn that fell in because we didn't have the $ to do anything with it.
Near your brother would be an added bonus. Oklahoma, they have lots of large farms there, don't they?

My dream property would have to be way out west, in the prairies, where there's tons of farm land.
I would want well over 200 acres, more if I could get it for a reasonable price. I would have a home custom built, large bedrooms and bathrooms, wood fireplaces throughout, all on one floor, with a private storage area off the main house so it wasn't very visible.
I would have large barns for horses, I would provide boarding and would rescue horses. There would be several large paddocks out near the barns for the horses.
Considering where it would probably be located, solar and wind power would be key for keeping as much off the grid as possible. I would want this to be as much of a green farm as possible. This would mean that the house would have to be well insulated to keep it warm during the winter using wood fireplaces more than other heating options.
I would build several cabins for camping. I would offer riding camps and overnight stays.
Primary animals would be horses, but would be open to having other animals as a source of income, but not to be killed for food. I don't want to do that, there are enough meat animals out there anyways.
Having so much land would give me a good opportunity to have trail rides, I'd make sure that the land bordered crown land, or had several acres of forest for riding.
It would have streams and ponds, and good fields for growing several types of crops for selling and eating myself.
It would be a full service equestrian facility, with indoor and outdoor arenas, a pool, possibly indoor, a tennis court, and who knows, maybe a go kart track.
If I couldn't do this out west, I'd go further east in my province where land is cheaper, property taxes lower, and forests galore.
More about the home. All one floor, the main living areas would be completely open concept, with large windows for the sun to shine through and keep warm during the winter. There would be a good solar installation on the roof, as long as the house was south facing to get the most of the daily sun.
The bedrooms, there would probably be 4 of them, would be large. The master bedroom would have its own bathroom with a large jacuzzi tub, walk in closets and large bay windows. It would have plush carpet, and a walkout to a deck.
The other rooms would be large as well, with walk in closets as well and built in shelving. One room would be made into an entertainment room, where we'd watch tv and play video games. We'd store most videos in there, but ones we don't use would be down in the storage area of the house.
The kitchen would be huge, an eat in area, fridge, stove, microwave and dishwasher as well. The floor would be heated, I wouldn't want to be cooking in bare feet on a cold floor.
The living room would have room for several pieces of furniture, have surround sound for the large tv, and would really be a place for relaxing. The dinning area would be off to one side, be large enough to have a table big enough for 10 people, and be comfortable. More plush carpeting would be in both the living and dinning area.
There would be a sun room as well where we could sit and relax and enjoy nature surrounding us. It would lead out to the deck where there would be a hot tub and small pool just for us.
We would have several rain barrels surrounding the house so we could use rain water for the garden.
I'd have an office in the house for a business, and it would be in an area of the house where clients wouldn't see the main house when they come to the farm.
This is my dream farm, and if I ever have the money, this is exactly what I would do.

I'm dreaming, but who knows. I've isolated an 1100+ acre property with a house already on it for less than $250,000, which is incredible.
I've mapped it out and looked at the property, I had no idea how large 1100 acres was, but that's an insane amount of land, over 46 million square feet.
Imagine the possibilities on that land!!

You could start your own town. People have started some I think with less land.

Hmmm, can I buy your land????
We are too much alike in this area. I think I would want everything on your land, but with a good size hill cleared of obstacles to make a great sledding hill in the winter. Oh, and of course it has to be in SW Ohio, not NY....

You would be in a better zone for growing more things. Esp. nuts. You could have more kinds of nuts than us.

Butternut, you can grow butternut. We can grow hazelnut in some places in our area and black walnuts, but butter nuts.
Pecans are way longer season, yes, down south.

I would like about 100 acres. Like meadow land up in the mountains here in the northwest. I remember a show I saw about The Judds. Their houses are together. The two sisters and mom each have their own place just over the ridge from one another. I think that would be nice for my daughter, granddaughter and grandson.

I would want a bunch of acres! Here would be fine. I would have a barn for horses and a field for a garden. I would have chickens and maybe even pigs...no goats though..they freak me out when they look at me..lol. I would also be the home to many pets. I would love to roll up and take a bunch of animals from the local pound. Fruits..lots of fruits too.

Goats are a challenge. It takes a special person to keep them from eating everything. My husband had to fight for his shoelaces and then for his hair!I was wearing slip ons when we went to visit the 1812 Homestead with its roaming goats.
People have said that you should volunteer at a chicken farm before you have them, also takes a special person. They like to peck at you and unless you either let them free range or cover their feces with odor killing or deading stuff, the manure had 10xs the smell of cow manure.
Pigs, anyone can raise them. They're easy. Eat anything, like mud, etc. Just don't let them get to weigh more than you.
Garden and fruit, sounds good! Take care!

Well, I'm not a forager, so I would be happy just to have some place that had a pretty flat place for a house, an easy access to the house from the road and lots of rocks, maybe even a small cliff and lots of local plants (to the area where ever that is). A small stream, even if its mostly dry would be extra nice. a few acres would be fine with me

I would want to have 100 or so acres of land. I'd want to have a small lake on it, a stream and I'd like many apple trees, I'd have some crops growing, tomato plants etc so that I could feed myself and my family. I'd have many acres of beautiful flowers as well, and I'd have a little walkway leading to a gazebo uphill from the lake so you can look over it. There would be a picnic table nearby and the gazebo would be big enough to fit 20 people in at one time.
I would want this to be somewhre here in the NC, most likely the triad area or the mountains.

Sounds like my cousin's place where I went one summer, except they didn't build a gazebo. Those weren't even heard of when I was a kid. Now many people have them. Enough to fit 20 people is huge!

I would want 50 to 100 acres of land, and on it, I would build a ranch where I could have troubled and foster children...any children who could and would benenfit from a stable, loving home where they really felt part of not only a family, but also a team. I would have livestock and a huge garden along with plenty of other things for the kids to explore and learn from, such as a wooded area for nature hikes, a pond for fishing in, a large play area for the kids to run and enjoy themselves, and a house big enough for each child to have their own private bedroom.
As far as location, I would want it in the mid-western area fo the U.S. where it was close enough to a small city to make going to get groceries and going to school easy enough to do, yet far enough out in the country where they didn't feel as if their life was non display for everyone to see.
I would plant flowers and trees along the property and allow each child to explore their interests, whether it be with woodworking, gardening, or anything in between. Inside the house, I would be sure to have a large dining room with a huge table so that everyone could sit down for family meals, and a living room area large enough for everyone to gather.
This has been something that I have wanted to do for many years, and I really hope that one day, I will be able to do it. I think of all of the abused and neglected, or simply troubled children in the world and I really think that I could make a difference with something like this. Once or twice, I even began drawing out plans for the way I would want the property to be set up.

Hiya WRE,
Me I would just want enough land that I could manage not acres and acres though. Just enough to grow vegetables on and have a few shady trees and a little Garden with lots of flowers in. Maybe a little stream running by if I am very lucky that is what I would want.
I would use Solar Panels and any other thing that I could to have my own Power Generator running as well.
Hope you get yours though sound like that is just what you want.xxx
