Boys are gross...

This morning, in addition to the usual battles with Cary, something new came up. Dearra saw him sitting on the floor with the milk carton. She wasn't quite sure if he was sniffing it or what, but later Naomi caught him drinking out of the carton. So, a quart of milk down the drain, and a lecture about why you don't do that. Sigh. And then the argument about cleaning up after his breakfast, followed by making him change his underwear (today it required 3 inspections before he actually did it), and then I got on him about brushing his teeth. Well, to be precise, I said to him, "get your butt up here and brush your teeth!" So the little smarty butt crawled all the way upstairs with his butt in the air, and brushed his teeth facing the floor with his butt in the air. I had to make him clean some toothpaste off the floor. All in all, a wonderful morning. And naturally he lied about every single thing, and said he had done it. So I ended up giving him the "nobody will want to be friends with you" lecture, followed by the "what would happen in court if you lied to the judge" lecture. Boys! Are all of them this gross? Or is mine just special?

This morning I was having a shower. My disabled 3 year old son and my 22 month old daughter were eating breakfast. I got dressed and carried my washing clothes basket towards the kitchen. I was dismayed when I saw my lounge floor. My daughter had emptied a packet of corn flakes and a packet of rice crispes all over the living room floor. My disabled son is very frightened of vacume cleaners. I was on the floor with a dust pan and brush putting all the mess she had made into a black sack for half an hour.

Gross and pure lazy! Now I'll admit I have a bit of a lazy streak, especially first thing in the morning. I find it near impossible to get my butt moving in the mornings. My oldest is usually long gone to school before I even think about opening my eyes. Naturally the other kids have to fend for themselves. They're good about making sure everyone has breakfast, and most days they're all dressed and ready to go before I'm up. I emerge from my room, make sure everyone appears to be ready, then I sit down and have some coffee at my computer. Well lately the 4 year old has not been dressed by the time I get up so I have to ask the 8 year old (who shares a closet with the 4 year old so generally is the one to set out the school clothes) why the little one isn't dressed. Today the 8 year old was taking out the trash because he failed to do so last night.. so I ask the daughter to get the little one some clothes and she informs me he has none in his closet. Well that's a shock because I do at least 1 load of laundry a day.. so how can he be totally out of school clothes? So I discover that the 8 year old boy.. who is also in charge of putting laundry away.. has not been hanging up school clothes. He tells me he has actually been throwing them under his bed because he does not feel like putting them away. So I'm outraged and know that if I attempt to deal with this I'll probably seriously injur the child.. so I park him outside the bathroom door where his father is showering and tell his father to deal with this. His father comes out of the bathroom acting all sweet and kind "Well why did you do that?" UGH!! I start screaming through the house while searching for something presentable for the 4 year old to wear that my husband needs to kill the boy.. which starts an argument between me and the husband because he's not helping the way I want him to and the 8 year old appears to be getting off scott free... UGH!! Just a typical stressful morning in my house. Though I must say girls aren't much better. Not only did my daughter need 3 reminders to brush her hair this morning.. she also needed like 10 reminders that she can't wear play shoes that she's had for like 2 years to school.

Sorry for laughing, but the laundry situation happens at my house too. I wash and fold the laundry, but the children are responsible for putting their own laundry away. Sometimes It stays in the basket all week, and the dirty stuff goes on the floor... Naomi does such a bad job of brushing her hair (it's really thick) that I do it for her...

I will do my daughter's hair for her on important days.. 1st day of school, picture day, events like dance recital etc.. and occasionally will do it when I feel like it through out the year. Other than that I leave it up to her because I don't like having added things to deal with in the mornings and just waking up is bad enough for me, LOL.

Her hair is just so thick, although now that we've gotten it cut, it's a lot easier. She tries, but if I let her do it, it gets really tangled and hard to deal with.

Yes they are! And I know I was when I was a kid. I have two boys, and they sometimes do some disgusting stuff(too gross to mention here), that I wonder how would girls ever like them. And when I ask them, they would say they don't like girls (the 5-year old just says whatever the big brother says)!

I think your special boy was having a really special morning. I have a grown son that one time got tired of the cake that I had here for snack, when they got home before I did. He threw it up in the air. It hit my ten foot ceiling. Chocolate or mocha on the ceiling. Yum. I think he was early middle school or late elementary.

Actually, Dawn, I tend to think it is an age thing combined with there is "one in every family" thing. I had all girls and there was one that sounds just like your son. She used to drink from the carton...regardless of how often I told her how gross and unacceptable that was. Once she was in the shower and we were trying to be cautious of water use. After being in the shower for over 10 mins., she was told to hurry up and soap up, rinse off and get out. The water stopped and she shouts back..."Wait...did you say soap? Ok now this is going to take a little longer!" Geez.

Actually, when the girls were down two weeks ago they told me something awful. They were doing work in their bedroom when son number 2 walked in. They were about 10 years old and this son did something totally gross. He told them that he has something that he had been saving up for them. He then proceeded to pass wind and then he mooned them! I couldn't believe my ears when they told me. I was at work at the time and so all the children were home on vacation. So yes, boys can be gross - but not usually in front of their mothers'.

You're a waste of life if you actually poured a quart of milk down the drain because he drank out of the carton. I can't afford a gallon of milk half the time, next time he drinks from the carton, mail me the milk, I'll gladly accept it... Also, guys aren't nasty we're just lazy. Buy paper cups, lots of them. Problem solved!

If he is too lazy to get a plastic cup, why would we think he would have the energy to get up and get a paper one? That is an expense you do not need. I did wonder why you did not just mark that carton as his and be done with it. Heat of the moment I am sure.

Exactly, plastic cup, paper cup, point is he didn't want to get up and get a cup... I didn't think of marking the carton until afterward.

Well I did feel bad dumping the milk. Next time, I think I'll just write his name on the carton with a sharpie, and he can drink out of that carton, and we'll use a fresh one. Believe me, I'd have been happy to mail it to somebody who could use it, if only it wouldn't spoil before it got there. Paper cups are a waste of life too, don't you think? We have plenty of plastic cups that can be re-used.

Yes they are, and my oldest is still gross. He is 15 and still doesnt wash his clothes or brush his teeth everyday. Just jumps out of bed and off to school. Laundry done way later. I have gotten tired of reminding him every day. So now a bit spread out. Now my 6 yr old he tried to get out of brushing his teeth and changing his underwear. He does love taking baths tho. But he told me today that brushing his teeth is boring! Haha. I told him getting your mouth drilled into is not fun at all.

All of them are that gross. Well, until they start noticing girls, THEN you can't get them out of the bathroom. Also, your dirty laundry will suddenly double or triple because they'll need clean clothes for every single thing. Hmmm, now that I'm thinking back, my oldest son was always squeeky clean and well groomed. Don't get me wrong, he was a total pig when it came to his room but he, himself, had to be spotless and without wrinkles. He's still a pig when it comes to picking up after himself and I'm especially glad that he no longer lives with me because of that but he's still a neat-freak when it comes to his person. My youngest, now, I had to tell him half a dozen times to take a bath but I always had to be extremely specific. Soap on the body... the WET body. Shampoo on the hair, AFTER getting it wet. Rinse off ALL shampoo and soap before getting out of the tub and dry off completely before getting dressed. Expecting him to hang up his towel was simply asking for too much. Occasionally, he did it, lopsided, but it normally just ended up with the dirty clothes in a pile on the floor. "Brush your teeth" would have resulted in his brushing with a sometimes-wet, sometimes-dry toothbrush, usually without toothpaste so that always had to be mentioned. They can drive you insane, you know. If you still have some sanity past their teens, you're doing good!

Boys are gross! I have even made the ICK face with several boyfriends/husbands. Like peeing and not washing their hands for one. And I think young boys follow after what they see. Men do have the habit of drinking out of the carton. I think most are grossly in need of some adequate addicate lessons early on. Boys look at things all different than girls do.

Of course not! Boys are ingenious, imaginative and innovative! He got your attention didn't he? That was exactly what he wanted. That you can lecture him out of these ways is not happening. I speak out of experience, my mother's solution was a stinging slap every time I was being "Different". Look what it has done to me, I've turned from a "wanna be different" to silly, for life! On the other hand I know how you feel. It is a bother, really! Lecturing is no disincentive. You need to give him the works. Get him to drink the whole quart, if he is old enough to understand your lectures, he is old enough to hold his milk. About the ostrich thing, what it needed for a cure was an impact, preferably with the palm of the hand, on the spot held at the highest level. Children understand action and action alone. They constantly push borders of their conduct to see the reaction. It is natural, only, the methods adopted are different for every child. That is the process of growing up. Set the limits and act at a violation, unfailingly and unemotionally. It is a fact that the more emotional you get, more it is "enjoyed". Hard to do, I know.
