I'm stumped, why would they do this?

I'm listening to the music being played by the ice cream truck that's on the next street and am quite perplexed as to why they would be playing the music they are. They're playing Christmas music. Would one be inclined to get ice cream from a truck playing that or from one that plays better music? This is a little confusing.

I think that you being perplexed, stumped, or confused is a good thing for them. I think their objective is to get their music noticed, and not just be dismissed as another ice cream truck, so that people would start to think, and debate among themselves if they want an ice cream or not! In any case, Happy Christmas!

It doesn't make a difference to me. It's too expensive and I'd rather not pay for it anyways from a truck. I buy it cheaper in the store and it's far better than what they sell in the trucks.

I have heard of Christmas in July, but Christmas in June? Never heard of that. Not sure I'd go near something playing Christmas music in the summertime. LOL Is the driver from a culture that is unfamiliar with Christmas music, and therefore does not understand what it is that he is playing?

That's my theory. Go see my post (later, here)! Maggiepie "We all want progress, but if you’re on the wrong road, progress means doing an about-turn & walking back to the right road; in that case, the man who turns back soonest is the most progressive." ~ C.S. Lewis

I do not really care what music they play, gimme the cold sweet stuff. I would only guess that they are playing Christmas music to make you think of cool times.

That might be true if that were all they played, but really it's just random. See my theory elsewhere (later) here. I thought Ice cream trucks all palyed that same type of music like the jack in the box... I've never heard one play christmas music or normal everyday music... It's always that same iconic (like I said earlier) that Jack in the box type music.... I hate their ice creams so it wouldn't worry me what type of music they were playing, it wouldn't persaude me to buy any.... It's not even christmas time, so I? don't understand why their playing it unless to catch people's attention...

If the ice cream truck is rolling, then it is probably warm outside. Playing Christmas music not only draws attention, but it is a mind game whereby people with 'think cooler' and will want to cool off more with ice cream.

Maybe they're benefitting from confusion itself. Confusion is a powerful thing. A lot of people use it to fool others to rob them or whatever. It's certainly a useful tool for evil doers.

Hmmm...evil doers & ice cream. Somehow those just don't compute in my brain... Maggiepie "We all want progress, but if you’re on the wrong road, progress means doing an about-turn & walking back to the right road; in that case, the man who turns back soonest is the most progressive." ~ C.S. Lewis

The one in my neighborhood does this, too, & I have a theory about it. I believe the tapes are compiled by someone who has no clue about American culture, & just picked various chime music available, not knowing the difference, from companies that produce tapes for this trade. You may hear old standards such as "She'll Be Comin' 'Round the Mountain" or other music that is no longer copyright-protected (& therefore cheaper to buy), mixed with "Jingle Bells" or "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer," or whatever. The trucks are often driven by Mexicans here illegally, or Chinese students, & I don't think they don't know the difference, either. And the kids don't care, even if they know. Just a theory... Around my area they just play music that sounds more like a music box. In fact every state i have lived in here in USA they all sound alike. The thing i think would boost sales is if the icecream were cheaper. When i hear the music i think."the icecream they have cost like $2-3 for one novility ice cream and i can buy a whole box at the store for that much."

It's not the christmas music. I think that is awesome. They are just drawing attention and that is a great idea. Our ice cream van plays silly music. It's like a carnival carosal or something.

The same here. It goes by maybe twice a day, quite a few kiddies on the block. It sounds like carnival music and when it stops a mechanical female voice says "Hello". It's goofy sounding, our kids loved to hear it coming when they were smaller, even though we never bought from the truck, they still ran to the door to hear it :)

The ones round here play ragtime jazz. To me, that's even weirder: their target audience is extremely unlikely to have EVER heard that music!

You mean Ice Cream trucks really exist? They're not just in the movies, and they actually play music like a chiming music box? I don't believe you! I've never seen one! lol... no really, I've never seen one. I didn't think I lived in an obscure place either. But I think if I heard any music playing then I'd come running... regardless of whether it was Christmas music or not.

Wow! Where do you live?! I've never been in a city in the U.S. that didn't have them! I did love to run to them as a kid; it was such a treat! I am surprised they even have Christmas music. Maybe they want you to think of something cold or draw attention to them. If their intent is to be different, I am sure it is working.

guess some people just can't wait, people have associated Christmas so much with commercialism, making good profit and free or loose spending, perhaps they are trying to do an association to make sales. Some people already forgot for whom that song is for and what it means for us Christians, tsk, tsk, I think that is poor taste but not the ice cream

Maybe, the ice cream truck owner was in a Christmas mood, lol! It really doesn't matter what music is being played. I don't think the kids cared so much for the music, the ice cream is all that matters to them.

Yea, you've got a point ... they could be trying out some of the new attractive songs. Usually when one's mind is set on something, one tend to forget about the other things around.

hi kris I have no idea but doubt that an ice cream hungry kid is going to give a whit as to the music and it beats the stuff that they play around here. Pop goes the weasel and songs so old that my grandparents probably sang them and kids will not care as its the cold sweet ice'cream they are running out to get. If I was hungry for ice cream I would not care if they played that sickening smile be happy thing over and over again.

I wonder if maybe the regular ice cream truck music isn't working properly for some reason. The Christmas music might just be a back up. In any case I think kids will still want to get ice cream no matter what the music is.

lol I would be sort of confused too, but as far as the ice cream itself if I can buy it from the truck and have the money for it, I would not mind the music. In fact I would actually ask what is up with Christmas tunes.

Don't you like a little Christmas music out of season? We only get a month or so of an opening to enjoy it during its "logical" time, why can't we have a little x-mas year-round? Of course, maybe it was the only thing they could find that they wouldn't have to pay royalties on. ;)

That Type of Music is Quite Old and just Written and Recording to Attract Your Attention. It Sends a Message that the Ice Cream Man is Here. To the Young Kids and the Adult Parents. It is Safe Music to and not like the Songs of the Radio Today. Most of it Good but a few Way Out Lyrics in Songs from Today's Artists
