That was not what was planned

I have been taking some contract labor jobs, since I do not have a ob right now, and today I got up, drove 45 minutes and was at a store where we were doing a reset. We had been working about two hours when the sprinkler system went off in another part of the store. We had to evacuate, the fire department came, and no body was allowed back in the store except the actual employees. Our reset will have to be rescheduled, and I only got two hours work today. The store will be closed down all day today to be cleaned up. This is the second time I have gotten up and driven in to a different town and ended up not working. Did you know the health department will have to give permission to reopen? As far as I know there was no fire found.

wow! What a waste of time and money. The health department coming in to give permission? This sounds a bit over the top doesn't it? I can understand the fire department but then the health department? I am so sorry that you did not get to do the job.

I believe the Health Department is because they prepare food on site. It is a grocery with a deli. When the job gets rescheduled I will be called to help.

Was the health Dept concerned because of the dirty water on the floor? What type of a store is it? Are you self employeed? if so you can write off the expenses of loss you got against any profit you get, on your taxes. That doesn't help much, I know. Blessings

It is a grocery store, with a deli and bakery, I heard the deli workers saying they had to have the health department in. We do claim car expenses on our taxes every year for the business we do. I just really do not like losing the early morning time as that is when I am most productive at my home. I will do it for a paying position, but this just gets me up too early and then I feel that I accomplished nothing.

wow that stinks, do you even get paid for the two hours you worked? And if there was no fire, what happened? A glitch in the system?

Oh, yes, I do get paid for the two hours we worked. I understand that they did some work in the attic in the electrical system. I am not sure if there was actually something on fire. Someone told me that they smelled smoke in the back room.

Thie is surely unfortunate as expensive as gas is now. I can understand the health department having a say into the reopening. Everyone is losing out. Was it determined why the sprinkler system activated? What is a reset? Inventory?

Resets are not necessarily inventory, but it is just as intensive. We pull all the things off the shelves, clean them, use the new plan o gram and put the product back on the shelf. Pull anything that is out dated and cut merchandise down so that it is not overstocked. Make room for new product lines that are coming in. I worked 9 1/4 hours yesterday in a different store. We were told that some electical work was done in the attic yesterday and that appears to be the source of the problem.

Thanks for the information. I have a couple of cousins that worked for a company that did similar work. From what they described, it is very intensive and tiring. They always had a deadline and schedule interruptions would practically give them ulcers.

GG Oh gosh am so sorry about the two days of having to drive there and not accomplishing what was intended. Boy oh boy do I remember secret shopping speakers and cancellations with no notification. Yea I knew about the health Department having to give permission to re-open, as they have to give a full clearance of assurance that electrical wiring is not a hazard for potential customers and employees. See they have to make sure that no water residual will affect any of the wiring. I hope the next contract goes better for you, I do hope that at least the transportation and mileage was reimbursed for this one.

I get paid for the two hours. I will go to another one tomorrow and then this one will be rescheduled. There are more projects I can sign up with if I want to.

What a shame you didn't get a full days' work in! But the health department?! They really are making that awfully complicated, no wonder businesses aren't doing well with all the red tape and hoops they have to jump through!

I think that has to do with the fact that they have a deli and do some actual cooking there. When it gets rescheduled they will call to see if I want to come do it again. It was too bad that it was still so early in the day. That is the town where I go do most of my shopping, but it was still an hour and a half before the stores opened.

Wow I know that has to be frustrating. 45 minutes my not seem like a long time but it is when you are driving it and it's taking your gas you paid for to do it. If you were working there then why did they not consider you and your crew as employees?

We are considered "vendors" and are only in to do specific jobs. We could not help clean up and we are not covered by their insurance should we slip on the water or if a fire actually started. It is a liability thing.

Yes it gets frustrating GG..and seems like a waste of time when you do the effort of going there and no work is done.. but why did the sprinkler system went off? anyways, like i have said on other discussion, i am on travel today..well since yesterday, i left the city at 2 in the morning and arrived here at 11 noon..and i was supposed to have a meeting by 1pm but the partner said it was canceled because they have an internal meeting which sucked on my part because it is a delay on my work..and now the second day, i thought there is also a meeting at 9am since it was the schedule then it was also postponed at 1pm! so tiring because i wasted time..though i get to rest..but still its a bit a waste of my time..and well i do not have any choice but to wait...

There might have been a fire in the spaces above the ceiling. I think you have had more of a bother than I have on your postponed meetings. I hope you have a good rest.

That must have been quite frustrating not to mention not at all profitable. You wasted an hour and a half of your time to drive there and back only to get two hours work, and with the price of gas these days you probably put the entire pay into gas for the drive. I did know that the health department would need to inspect the store before it could reopen. I believe that is due to water, mold and other health concerns, even if no fire was found. My friend worked at a store where the sprinkler system malfunctioned and flooded the store, and pretty much everything had to be thrown out, even the merchandise that did not seem at all affected by the water. I think the only things that did not need to be thrown out were the ones that were wrapped in the plastic coverings.

Wow, that certainly looks like a challenge for you, driving 45 minutes for 2 hours, then that long going back, but I'm glad things are working out according to the comments section. Do you get reimbursed for gas milage as well? Hmmm....a thought just came to me, perhaps they have something like this in my city.....must check it out :-) Cheers!

I do not know if there are jobs in Canada, but I do know that if they are available you can sign up through a company online called narms.com and then there is a company called volition.com that does the same. Good luck. I do not know if I will get mileage or not. I will look into it.

For many things, who would have thought them.In the ordinary course of events, the employer should pay you subsidies for your loss of working time.Did you drive 45 minutes for your health? I don't know what the contract had stipulated.I don't catch"Did you know the health department will have to give permission to reopen?"Did the sprinkler system do off have to do with the health department?

Because this store sells food and also prepares food the health department will have to inspect the premises and make sure it is safe for customers and workers who are not covered by the company insurance.

That't too bad that you had to drive that way for just two hours of work. Yeah for health and safety reasons the health department in most places do have to give the permission for the reopen of certain businesses after a fire or fire scare. I hope it is able to rescheduled soon.

Wow!! Sorry to hear of your mishap my friend. Especially in today's economy when Gas prices are still a little high it can be frustrating when things happen and since you were just there to do a reset it often becomes your own bill for not being able to do the work as well. Hope things can get better from here.

I will get paid for two hours work, so that covers the gas and then some. I just need to make up my mind how I am going to work and pay the bills.

I do that same type of work. Two weeks ago Tuesday, we were there 30 strong (insanity!) to reset and fill the wall of freezers except the construction crew wasn't ready for us. We were sent home after 30 minutes but told we would get paid for 4 hours. It happens. I was working in a store when they lost their power. Insurance regulations preventing us from staying, so anyone NOT employed by the store had to get out. The previous company I worked for was SO unreliable that they once sent me to a job that had been cancelled an hour away! And when I was there, the STORE told me the job had been cancelled! I called my boss, she asked me to wait till I heard from her--I went to the gas station to get gas to get home when she called and said to go home an hour later! The reason that the health department has to give permission to reopen is because the sprinkler went off and possibly caused other issues, like mold growth. There is also food involved, and the health department is ALWAYS involved. There's probably L&I (Licenses & Inspections) people involved. Supermarkets are a tough business! If someone isn't flexible, they won't survive long doing this work. It's not my first job option either, but I HAVE job and to me, that's all that counts. I was self employed until the economy collapsed so I'm ineligible for unemployment. I make due with what I had, and don't really try to complain about my current lot in life cause there ain't a damn thing I can do about it!

I have had all of those things happen to me in the two weeks I have been trying to do this. Money is good when you get to do the job. I have requested you as friend. I would like to know what company you are working for. Oh, and all the other resets either were canceled or the team leader who is from a different company said she did not want any extra help, not sure. I have not worked retail in about twenty years. I would not mind doing product demos again, either. You do not start at 6 in the morning for those.

I sometimes did work like this several years ago and it was very frustrating when these things happened. It is costing you to work when you do not make enough to cover gas expenses and that is no way to work. I sure hope that you get to go back and work soon and make decent money doing it.

The one for today was canceled. They at least called me this time so I did not go down. I have one scheduled here in town next week. There are others I could take, but I am not sure that I have the experience so far. My goal actually is to enhance my retail experience so I can get a job at a store that I am targeting. I get good mileage in my car, so it is as much a time issue as it is a cost issue.

Wow, that is terrible for you and for the store. I am sure that created quite a mess and probably ruined a lot of merchandise. It is unfortunate you did not get to work the full day. I am sure that was very disappointing as I am sure you were counting on that money. I hope you get more contract jobs and get to work the full time from now on.

There are a couple of sites where I can look for them. I also could do more writing online, and not be out any gas money at all.

It would make you wonder what was going on. So you lose money and gas. What a bummer. I was get aggravated. Atleast you got the two hours. They should pay you anyway or atleast partially. Years back they would have. Now days with the right to work laws you expect much from any jobs anymore.

With contract labor you take your chances. I will make a little money, and more than what my gas cost. I am needing more money for some home improvements so I am looking at a lot of temporary things. I am also hoping that I will develop or restore my retail skills. I have a store that I am targeting that I want to be a possible employer.
