Kismet

Kismet - hard to tell, I know, but she really is doing much better, and you can see her fat little tummy

Well, its been a week since we took in little Kismet. We dropped her on a scale and it says she's weighing a pound now, which is what she should be weighing at 4 weeks, which is about what she is, so I think we've managed to get her, more or less, back on track. She ate and slept the first day, but by the second day, she needed more than a little bathroom to run around in, so the roomie took her into the office with her. She got herself out of the laundry basket and played then managed to climb back in to eat and sleep. Except for the fact that she looks the same color as the floor to the color blind roommate, she'd probably be safe running around the house. The roomie tried to get Daisy to play with her, but Daisy took one look, hissed and got up high, she's afraid of this little thing, Sparky, however, played with her for a long time yesterday, and amazingly gently too. So, Kismet is thriving now that she's got good food and not being eaten alive by fleas and have the worms out of her. She still does a bit of foot feeling like she doesn't realize that she really is seeing, but the vet says her eyes are fine, she's just gotten the habit of feeling her way with her paws. I just wanted to update y'all on how she's doing. You ever rescue a baby animal like this?

I've had many, many cats. Some were rescues and some just walked up and made it known that they were going to live with me. Usually if one came that was in distress, I managed to do whatever needed to be done to let them grow up. Then I've had mother cats come in and had to find homes for the little ones. That's tough when you don't know many people because you work all of the time. However I've never had more than two or three at a time, not counting the new litter. From the coloring and the nose, Kismet looks like she's got some Siamese in her. Did you notice that? Also looks like the stress she's been undergoing has robbed her of hair growth. That should improve now. I'm glad she is doing okay and is progressing.

Oh, yeah, I think she's going to be a blue, or a blue torti point, I noticed it right off when everyone else was still thinking it was DIRT! I agree, that the stress and poor diet has affected her hair some, but that should be better in a few months.

oh, no, not full blood, but once you get past the first generation, you often get points again (first generation cross out of Siamese is black)

Surely she's not full-blooded though. I can't see anyone except the ignorant just letting a Siamese kitten wander.

thats great. are you kidding? when my 5 kids were little, they brought in every stray animal, babies and all, and anything given to them in spite of my much protests because i was the one would end up taking care and worrying over them, plus, id cry a lot when i lost one. so glad the furbaby is doing so well. its so cute

it is heart breaking to lose a little one, in some ways worse than when they are older, because when they are older, they've at least lived a good life... But she was SO interested in food, I really didn't think that if she were healthy she wouldn't survive - heck, she hasn't wanted anything to do with the milk I got her - oh well...

Elic....did you get regular milk? I thought that most cats were lactose intolerant?

Yes, it is hard when we lose one. I, too, am glad Kismet is filling out. She's becoming a very pretty baby!

Creamery and Princess both came to us as babies, but not that small. I grew up with cats and kittens, at times as many as thirty two or three at a time. I have taken care of kittens with birth defects or with sick mommies in the past. Adorable, but a lot of work as well. As I have had babies come and go over the years, Tiger has been kind to them and welcomed them into the house. I have wonderful pictures of him with Pikaru, (aka Sneakaroo) and I sure miss Sneaky, as we had to put him to sleep because of a severe bladder/UTI situation. We could not afford the $100 per day the vet was going to charge to attempt to save him. Our regular vet was gone, and this was the emergency care vet.

That's sad, but there does reach a point on what you can afford... and is it kinder to put the pet out of pain... with Sassy, she's in no particular pain, she's just very old... 20 they say 96, but I suspect its over 100

I believe that my regular vet could have saved him. However she was at the State Fair. As it happens every year.

Yeah, the comforter is light weight, but she's only just adjusting to air conditioning, so she was probably enjoying the warmth of the bed.

I never have done an animal rescue. I do know someone like you who does what you do. My younger brother's sister in law does cat rescues and fosters cats so they can go up for adoption. She even have alot of cats living in her home like you do! Her name is Deb and she even helps out getting, other animals, like dogs adopted at the local human society. She is really is a do gooder!

I picked up Oscar and he was tiny but I didn't have much experience with cats so I was ignorant. They told me he was six weeks old but I don't think so. He would treat my bathrobe pocket like a pouch. It was embroidered and there were small thread knots on the inside of the pocket. He would be on my lap and snuggle into the pocket and suckle on these thread knots. He was otherwise weaned and drinking okay and eating solids, although I can't really remember details. He was a lovely cat, very gentle and affectionate...pure white.

as young as she is, she isn't trying to nurse... she's also not too much on being held, tho if you catch her, she's fine

How cute is this kitten siamese??? I noticed that the nose is alittle different color as well as the tail. Ive had 2 siamese before that started out white then the color comes to the nose, tail, ears and feet.

Yeah but watch them when they get older. The two i had were female and they would urinate on the walls like a male. They were the only females i ever had that did that.

You've done a good job with Kismet. I hope your vet is not one of those expensive one. No, I've never rescued a baby like that. The best I can say that I've done is rescue a couple of cats from the pound.

fortunately, my vets are about as inexpensive as they come, and they are good about letting us owe them (need to run $$ by for the treatment of the baby - but they know I'm good for it) I've only gotten one from the pound, but I've kept a bunch from going there!

My daughter was recently working at the haunted attraction she was employed at last year. It has been abandoned and there were some feral kittens there. One was easily caught and like Kismet...very very small. She was a little rough looking and underweight but once we got her...she is doing great. I already had the stuff I needed from the cat I took in and the owners finally came and got. We were set for a little orange ball of fur. I think her big blue eyes were the biggest thing on her I have been meaning to post a picture of her. She looks alot better now than when we first got her. She's very independent though...not one to want to be loved on alot...lol...that's ok though..I do it anyway.

probably because she had enough time to learn some feral behaviors - Kismet does have a few things that say "feral" but mostly she's doing very well, likes fingers and isn't afraid of hands or feet, but doesn't really like to be picked up - but once she's up she starts purring...

Our Chester was like that. When we took him in, he was maybe three or four weeks old...thin as a rail. We had to start him out on cream and buttermilk then move him up to wet cat food for a couple weeks. Then graduated him to dry kitten food which we kept him on for a couple months until he was strong enough to chew the adult food. You would never believe how tiny he once was to look at him now!

Kismet didn't want ANYTHING to do with milk, she wanted MEAT! That was part of how we knew she was older than 2 weeks!

who ever was feeding them was feeding them some kind of cat food - she still has her "baby" teeth, she won't lose them until she's about 6 months - just like kids lose theirs about 6 years old.

This is adorable - hats off to you guys for rescuing the little thing and helping to nurse it back to health! I've never really rescued an animal like this, but my cat was from a shelter, and we chose my partner's hamster because he was being picked on by the other hamsters It's so nice to hear about something positive like this when so many discussions this week have been people complaining, thanks for cheering me up! Good luck with the kitten, hope she stays content as she seems to be.

Thanks, she's a sweet little thing, maybe next week we can trust to leave her out all the time, right now, she's so small! There was a big cat fight last night and Kismet, sensibly, ran and hid!

We have had stray kitties in the past. I think yours may have been in worse shape, judging by your posts. She is certainly adorable, and it's wonderful that you took her in and are getting her well. I hope you have your little sweetie for many happy years!

I love kittens. If I found a baby animal to rescue, I certainly would. My sister is known for her cat rescues. I was once talking to a guy at a cafe about cat rescues, and I mentioned the lady in my sister's town with the purple fence around her house, and he said he knew her. :) Everyone knows my sister! :) :) :)

I'm glad to hear that she is doing good now. We got our Yorkie when he was only 4 weeks old. He was weaned way too early from his momma so we took him and raised and fed him formula and such.

awww great job you've done with little Kismet!!! glad to know that another little critter is no longer suffering because of a kind soul. my girl, my avatar, was rescued too. i have no idea how old she was when i first got her. i chanced upon her on a road, thinking that she is a piece of rag. when our car neared, i realised it's a kitten. she made no effort to move, or should i say she was too weak to even move a whisker. we moved her to the side and returned 20 minutes later with milk (yes i now know milk is BAD for cats). she did not moved at all. i knew she couldn't survive if i leave her there so i brought her home. best decision i've ever made. twelve years of unconditional love and many more years to come.

Kismet was found eating on the side of the street that the roomie's folks live on. Her eyes were sealed shut with dirt and infection, but they just needed to be cleaned out and treated, they are fine now. and milk, not the best food, but not the worst either...

Aww! Kismet is a cutie! When I was a kid my friend and I rescued many kittens some of which had been abandoned by their mother at birth. We manage to save some although we sadly also lost a few. I adore cats and I think it is because I grew up around them. My father had a workshop and its courtyard was inhabited by many cats of all shapes and sizes. I got to know most of them and named the majority of them as I would feed them and care for them. Great to hear that Kismet is doing well, she’s a lucky kitty!

I take it you'd like to discuss saving 'infant animals'. Well, I think I have a story for you. When I was young a friend brought me a baby skunk. Yes, a skunk. It was so small it's eyes weren't even open yet. From the top of it's head to the tip of it's tail it barely filled the palm of my hand. I used a mixture of evaporated milk with sterile water, just a bit over 50%/50% heavy on the milk side. The little guy thrived on it! I had him for several years, and yes I had the odor problem taken care of, he never tried to spray prior to the visit to the vet, but he did have a slight accident while playing with the broom. He was a cuddler, liked to curl up on a lap, his favorite snack was popped corn, hearing those kernels pop would bring him running and chirping for his share. He often went for car rides with me, visiting friends and even schools. Having a skunk as a rescue animal is an adventure all it's own.
