Black eyes - reprised...

So, yesterday my other roommate had another minor surgery - I know, its pretty major when they knock you out completely, but at least they weren't opening her up completely either...
This is the 3rd minor surgery this summer BTW.
First she had her knee done, then her shoulder, and now... NOW she's gotten her nose done.
This isn't cosmetic, she's had her nose broken several times so she couldn't breath well.
So they got in there, messed with her nose, raised her lower lids to help open the sinuses...
They called me to pick her up, I'm sure she was THRILLED when I came in and said "oh look two black eyes!"
She was complaining earlier that she really doesn't mind the black eyes, its that she can't breath!
I can relate, after all, I was an Afrin addict for years...
So, have you ever had a medically necessary nose job?
Thank GOD I have NOT!

I have never had a cosmetic surgery and I hope I never have to have it! To me, the risk and the cost is way to much for just the sake of vanity. Now granted there are some people who have been in accidents and those types should indeed get plastic surgery but besides that I am no fan! No one is sticking a knife to my noise without good reason!
I do feel bad for your friend though. Not being able to breath must be awful! I also imagine that three surgeries in one summer is no picnic either.

I used to think I might want my nose 'bobbed' but I've changed my mind, it gets stopped up enough with it being BIG!
I think the fact that her father and her husband were the breakers of her nose probably didn't help any, but to FINALLY get a doc to agree to fix it...
you want to know what... she wanted these surgeries done at the same TIME! Thank GOD the doctors wouldn't agree to that!

If I ever did it, it'd be strictly cosmetic. I've always despised my stubby, nubby little nose! It's an unfortunate cross of my mother's & father's nose...but mostly Dad's.
As to your roomie--OWWWW!? Poor thing!!!
Oh, & Elic, how many times, as editors, have we scolded writers for leaving off the final E in breathe?
Shame, shame! I guess we need to do another zine, just to get you back into practice, eh, what?

Oops. Forgot to add: I did have black eyes (though probably not as severe as your roomie's) when I had my eye surgery--which, as you know, wasn't for cosmetic reasons. It took at least a couple of years for all the bruising to leave! (Whew!) I also got one or two when I was a tomboyish girl. I know of one for sure--that time I jumped out of the swing & hit my cousin head on. That one stayed for 6 weeks.

I am amazingly surgery free for my age. Some of it has to do with no insurance, but not really. I have had three surgeries in my life. I know, the black eyes are part of the procedure, and I sure hope she breathes easier when she is healed. I can picture them pulling those eyelids up.

Nope, not counting wisdom teeth or the apicoectomy, or freezing off moles. I had a lymph node removed, a hysterectomy and that foot surgery. I was going to add that if your profile is correct "Ha ha, I am older than you are" at least for a while.

Hi ya ElicBxn
The only surgery I have ever had is to remove my tonsils and pollops from my throat. So, no I have not had surgery of any description on my nose. I have had my nose peireced a couple of times and the healing of that was bad enough, so I can imagine that your roommate is in quite a lot of pain even though her eyes are black, I think that is the least of her pain! Poor thing

Afrin is a nasal spray to keep the head clear during a cold, its also addictive and has a rebound affect if used too long...
They stitched up around her lower lids to lift the skin from around her nose and basically rebroke her nose to fix it...
I pity the fool that tries to break MY nose!

I have not and hopefully will not sometime soon. I am going to a specialist as I am getting daily headaches and migraines. It is to the point that something is terribly wrong. I do wonder if it is due to my sinuses as I was told once years ago. Hopefully nothing major but the pain is too severe that I am very worried something is wrong.

After I had some serious ear aches, I went to an Ear/Nose and Throat doc. After running all kinds of tests, right at the end I mentioned that I can't STAND to have the ear pieces of my glasses sit on my ears.
He pushed on my ears, then my face and told me that I have shallow sinuses and that there was nothing he could do to fix that, but if they got infected, they could lead to major problems, including migraine type headaches and then they could do surgery...
So far, I've dodged that bullet!

Well, I have never had them have to do any type of surgery around or to the nose area. The closest I came was when 2 yrs. ago they did surgery on my eyes and did implants because of having cataracts. For me that was pain enough.

Was the reason she couldn't breathe through her nose that it was packed with surgical gauze?

ElicBxn,
Haha, I guess I wouldn't mind having black eyes after surgery since I already have them! But that's pretty cool, your eyes changing color after surgery. I'd want a really cool color, like blue or green eyes. I've heard people have purple eyes, and that'd be pretty cool too!
I've never had a medically necessary nose job, and hope I never will. Nose jobs sound painful. For a while, when I was younger, I wanted to get my nose slimmed down. I have a pretty wide nose, and would love for it to be more narrow and defined. But I'm over that, and I've accepted who I am. So yay, fun story.
Happy mylotting!

hi elicbxn oh I just avoided having to have a medically necessary
nose job done when I had my infamous fall on the tile floor by'
our elevator. I smacked down face down , broke my nose and a small bone above my right eye. I was x rayed from head to foot and had only a broken nose and the one nurse said I would be referred to an ent man for that but when I was admitted to the rehab hospital for my twisted right knee the doctor said no it was a simple fracture and no surgery was needed,. but oh my my eyes were black as coal and at first my fellow patients all thought i had been in a car accident,. oddly that nose fracture was not painful but the small break above my right eye hurt but oh my right knee,it was so painful and yet no broken bones .I was a Four Way nose spray addict for years too til my son insisted I quit using the stuff and go see an ent doctor who helped me to get unaddicted and I learned I had allergies to dust and dust mites so take benadryl at ni ght so I can sleep without my nose being all stuffy.

yeah, its amazing how bad things hurt when they AREN'T broken! I swear my sprained ankle hurt way more than the break in my foot... on the other hand, they didn't want me to WALK on the ankle, but wanted me to walk on the foot (I walked on the big toe only since I broke the bone on the side by my small toe)

Nope I never had a nose job, my nose and everything on my face are all natural, but I did have surgery as a teen Not for vanity, but a very necessary procedure done won't go into detail but the sugery was really painful and stressful but it did improve my life a bit but nothing else done though.

I have and it was not a nice experience! I had a deviated septum for years from a knock I received on my nose when I was a young child and my parents as per usual did not bother to have it looked at. I put up with it for a long time and sleeping was the most difficult thing because I could not breathe properly if I lay on the wrong side. One day I decided I had enough and wouldn’t mind some time off work so I saw a specialist who recommended surgery and two weeks at home. “Wow, a fortnight off!” I thought, “Great!” All I can say is that I woke up after the operation feeling like a wanted to throw up and not being able to breathe because my nose was packed with gauze. Forty eight hours later and another sleepless night the doctor showed up to ‘unpack’ my nose using rather large tweezers. To say that I saw stars is an understatement! That is without mentioning frequent nose bleeds for the next couple of weeks. Yeah, great time off, indeed! Did I mention the black eyes and bruised cheek?
