In 1988, I was serving in a college 300 kilometers away, I bought a washing machine, washing machines were new than, it was made by Voltas, semiautomatic model; we used it for 12 years, the spinner started giving trouble, it could not be repaired there due to lack of service centre and technician. I got a transfer to another city, bought a fully automatic Samsung machine; here I served till my retirement in 2006. When I came to my home city, we brought both of them here. The Voltas machine was lying in a room here. It is learnt that this company is not making semi-auto machines anymore; moreover there is no service centre here. Yesterday I checked it, opened it (I had an electronics shop, I used to repair appliances there during 1964-1968). I could recover 12 one rupee coins, 6 half rupee coins, few buttons, 2 sari-pins, 2 neck-tie clips, 2 safety razor blades inside it. I changed some parts, which were for some other make after little modifications; and I am happy it is alive after 11 years; I have kept this in the guest room. Have you tried repairing your appliances, I always do, if I fail I call a technician. I feel happy. Please respond and share your valued opinion. Thanks in advance. Professor ‘Bhuwan’. . Cheers have a lucky day ahead. 26/12/2011

yay!I can't believe you got all that out of the washing machine and then got it running again! It sure looks like it was worth it to bring it along for that last move and stick with it until you got it up and running!! Yay!

Congratulations Prof. Bhuwan. I guess it is very natural for guys to have the instinct to repair something. All guys in my family are like you, they want to find it themselves first what's the reason why it is broken and try to fixed it up. Then if they did not succeed, then that's the time they will call a technician. I do try to make minor repair in my typewriter and office printer, that's the only things that I could at least do.

I never try to repair my appliances. I have an adversion to electricity some what like my grandmothers. My grandmother was very sensitive to electricity. She could feel it when she plugged something in. Very hard for her to get used to using a electrical stove. I am that way also and I have my daughter fix anything or we call maintenance.

I will call a repair man or my landloard to have things fixed. I don't like to fix things I can fix and will not touch anything I know nothing about! In the first year of living in my apartment the oven went out and to be replaced. The refrigerator was not keeping food cold and was getting very loud. It was replaced like the stove. I called the landlord and she had to get both replaced. Nothing came out of my pocket. When my water heater went out last year my landloard had to get a repair man in and it turned out the water heater needed to be replaced, which it was. In March a friend of mine gave me a washer and dryer she had for nothing! A month later the rotator in the machine stopped spinning when I would use the washer! I know nothing of washers so I called a repair man. It turns out the motor that makes the rotator spin needed to replace. This time I had to pay out of my pocket! In some ways it is nice to rent so I don't have to pay for alot of things that needed fixing!

Oh professor, you are really a gifted man to be so knowledgeable on many things including repairs of appliances. You wife must be so proud of you, that whenever an appliance at home breaks down, she need not worry because you can repair it.

Well, it is really a pleasure to make one old machine come to life again. Thank god,you still keep it, or else, you won't achieve happiness today. Though i have not done such things, but every time one machines got trouble, i will try to let my husband to fix it, or else try to let others to do it. I always hold some hope for it can come to life again.

If you had to open this washing machine 11 years ago you may not have had to spend for a new washing machine. The machine may have stopped working because it was filled with a lot of precious stuff!!!! I have not attempted such stunts in my lifetime and if anything is spoilt I just junk it. Any anyway men are better with their mechanic skills.

hi professor I have always lived in apartment complexes so did not have a washing machine of my own. but when my son and I were still living together any electric appliance of any kind quit working my son was there with his many assorted tools and he saved us' so much money we would otherwise have had to pay repairmen. He even repaired my headphones with wire from a bread wrapper. He is a genius in repairing things. He is now working full time as a computer programmer.he stuck with this company part time until finally a full job opened up and he got it. I think its great that you know how to make repairs too.No wonder the machine was not working with all that stuff in it lol lol.

Hi Professor, it is good to know that you didn't throw away your old washing machine. At least, after you had cleared all those little stuffs away, the machine is doing fine again. My hubby always do the checking, whenever any of our home appliances had gone into trouble. We are trying our best to check and modify any parts until that appliance is really unable to be repair anymore. So, we saved quite a lot of money, as not necessary to send any of them to any servicing and repairing shop. Since my hubby ever learned some basic knowledge in repairing some electrical appliances.

I personally am not much of a handy person, however, I would say that my husband is pretty handy when it comes to repairs to appliances that might be needed here in the house and also for the cars and such as well. I honestly believe that he would be able to do anything for me if it was something that needed to be done immediately. However, I also find that there are times that he just doesn't feel like fixing things even though he does know how to do it.

I'm still young and I have less knowledge on it. But I never fail to learn by trying. I had fixed an electric fan and flat iron. Small appliances may it seem but the pleasure to fix it by myself is priceless.

I like your ingenuity sir. Me too i don't like to throw slightly damage things, my husband love to repair those appliances, and im very happy everytime he fixed it. Why buy new one if you could still use those things, and i value things especially those with sentimental value to me, i have a motorcycle which i bought last 2004, our drunk friend met an accident using that motorcycle, the headlights were damaged, and all other parts in front, some of our friends suggested to sell it and buy new one, but i did'nt do it coz i value this motorcycle so much. and i love it.it seems that its already a part of my family. Now we are still using it and i have no plan to sell it. We call it "MyBlue"

My husband bought a washing machine in the yar 1982. It wasa locally made machine names 'KLAS'. It worked for a few years but some guests misused it and it gave way Now we have a Samsung machine. Normally I give them for repair.I am incapable of repairing nay gadget myself ; this is why I am extra careful with gadgets and do not wish to buy anything extraordinary.
