Too many responses? Too little time? How does one handle such a situation?

There are times when one least expects it responses just get flooded. What happens then? Is it possible to do justice to all those responses - comment and then counter comment sometimes leading to a long chain of to and fro commenting. Who will you choose and what will you choose? Have you had this experience and have been fair to all responses?

When i receive quite a few responses, i don't comment on all of them at the same time. Firstly,i will comment on the ones where i know my answer is appropriate to the responses, then later on i will go back and respond to the others if and only if,my comments will not be similar or the same as my previous ones, since repeating the same thing over and over again is really not necessary. So,i would say yes, i do try to be fair to everyone even though it's not always possible to answer every single response.

The earnings may be insignificant but it also forms part of a discussion allknowing! Many people write a few lines for the sake of it and move on. It depends on each person's time and inclination.

My statement is for the 'When too many responses are received it becomes more like a question answer session' part of your sentence.

When too many responses are received it becomes more like a question answer session and not a discussion per se. Not being able to comment on all respnses is the sad part of the story!

I normally start a discussion only when I have time and I am reasonably sure I will be able to respond and comment further. When I am in slight doubt I will add a clause asking to be patiently borne with if I am delayed.

That is true. Sometimes, there is so much of comprehensive discussion and interaction just between a few members that one wonders whether all has been said and there is nothing at all left.It is good but many times we do do not have the time and inclination.

Nothing like looking at a topic that has been discussed threadbare even with few responses as joining in and having a say seems to me to be a better proposition. Just a thought.

Hi there! I rarely start new discussion so I don't have such problem..Always comment back to any comments I received. I wonder the same too for those who like to start many as they really have time to answer to all of them but from my observation there will be only some of them who did so while the rest they usually answer the first two pages and leave the rest or they just select any post they like to reply.(^^) I always suggest to them to start just a few so they can reply to all the comments they have but decision is in their hands~(^^)

The sole meaning of this site is to have discussions on topics raised but when many responses are received the quality of interaction goes down and understandably so. myLot is not the only activity that users here spend their time on and therefore in my opinion if there are fewer responses then they could be developed into meaty discussions as I call them.

We do not get notifications when further comments are received and we therefore need to look at our 'started' page to check frequently. I did not get any notification about this comment you have made here but because I checked I got to know that you have put a comment and a good one too!. I can do this because I have received few responses.

Fewer responses but have back and forth conversation is better than having more and with only single response. I like it when one person send in his/r comment and then others get in his/r- like interruption on the same topic without they need to send their post but we will not going to get notification about it unless if we check the responded button...

Hello Allknowing, It happens with me most of the time and i just can't do justice to the discussion as i can't comment back to the responses but though delayed i try to comment back to the responses.Still now lot of my discussions are unresolved and i have to comment back to the responses which i will try to finish of soon and that's the reason i don't want to start discussions now a days.

I don't think they should. Some people may feel like writing a few lines on a given topic and whether the person who initiated the discussion comments or not, the person who responded gets two cents or so; why spoil another person's chance at earning that small sum? There may be people who look at that.

In that case I wonder if myLot could introduce an option to bar further responses? It is better that way than leaving responses unattended to. What say?

This is one of those reasons why I prefer to respond to discussions, rather than starting them...hehehe! Anyways, in reply to your question/ discussion here, I think that if there are just too many responses, then you have a choice of either responding to each one or to choose to reply to only those you feel that are worth replying to.

Everyone who responds waits to receive comments on their responses and that is how a response gets recognised and opens up into a discussion.

Miadsoriano! What allknowing is trying to say is that when people interact more and more under the same topic, the discussion becomes really worhtwhile even if a comparatively lesser number of people are participating than a discussion which has many many responses but there is not enough time to comment on. And we cannot ignore any response without comment because it is courtesy to comment on a person's response.

I think having a lot of responses is a good thing. This means the discussion you have made is very interesting for most members. Just try to entertain all the responses, whether it be negative or positive, as much as you can.

When many responses are received even if it is just to one topic not much justice can be done to deal with responses received. That is the time when there is a tendency to 'pick and choose'!

"allknowing" how can you not know? hee hee A person probably would not receive all the responses at one time. Maybe throughout the day and next day. So, unless it is 100 responses, it shouldn't be too overwhelming to respond to them

Sometimes I get many responses and I am always very happy when that happens, but it takes me a long time to comment on all of the responses. I love commenting on the responses and I enjoy talking to people who respond. If I don't have enough time to comment on all of the responses I postpone some of the comments. That doesn't mean that I have forgotten the discussion and don't intend to comment on the rest of the responses, it just means that I didn't get around to them yet. I don't think that late comments are a bad thing, and sometimes it not possible to comment on every response as quickly we want (if we don't have much time)

Too many responses will only be of substance if they are commented on and the topic discussed thoroughly which is difficult really. It is better to get a few responses and spend time dealing with them than rush through commenting on several responses where I feel justice cannot be done.

Heyya allknowing! I usually only start one or two discussions at once so that I am sure to give justice to all that responds. I love a very active discussion. I always answer all the responses. I feel like if one has taken the time to respond, the least I can do is let them know that I have read it and appreciate the fact they have found my discussion interesting enough to post in.

No allknowing, I don't have that issue as I get very few responses. That's okay though I'll just keep responding to others and get credit that way anyway. This ones I like to respond anyway so that helps my feelings. Maybe you won't have too many respond to this one and won't have to take so much time deciding what to do. Keep up the great work!

Oh allknowing! You nut! I just went to your profile. You spend much much time on mylot. Wish I could, but You haven't started but 4 discussions in 2 weeks. You will be able to handle that easily enough. I thought you were serious and I wanted to see how many you actually have to answer!

Hi there... I never leave any response without commenting. I try to be fair to all respondents but if it is too long and i have collected many responses then i give a break so that i have not to repeat my thoughts. It is a hard task and i admit that but most hard to select the best response, Have a nice time.

hello ak, That is one reason why I only posted one discussion at a time. I've tried posting 3 discussion and all got responses and I find it really hard to response to every comment. So, from that time on, I tried to start one discussion. That way,I am sure I can respond to every comment and also have a good inter-action with other mylotters. Have a good day

If there are too many responses even if the topic is just one, there is a tendency to pay more attention to some and ignore others.

Yes I have experienced this before and I don't feel too good about it. I cannot be on here as much as I want to or used to be here before because of school. I really have a lot of discussions I haven't responded to and I do feel bad :( And also today I am back here after almost a month I think. The thing was I had forgotten my password and don't really have time for internet these days!

You will be paid for your contribution and responses to the topic posted by you are not your contribution. If you comment on those responses there is a chance that your comments could earn you something provided they are quality comments.

this only happens to me every once in a while and when that usually happens you make Todays Top Discussions i made it 3 times yesterday on 3 of my discussions and the discussions got atleast 10-20 responses and my best answer for you my friend is try to reply to as many as you can its one of the only ways you get paid here.

The payment part here is just a bonus juggal... A discussion needs to be filled with opinions and counter opinions and when too many responses are received it does not happen that way.

So nice to see your beautiful Rose! I would like to believe, that I am "ever" the diplomat...and each response I receive deserves a quality reply! Easy for me to say...as I have never faced that dilemna (LOL) YOUR time is as precious...as I deem mine to be, therefore you deserve quality recognition! If there are time constraints (as I work everyday)...I create time, with my "unwinding" cup of tea...at day's end, to give creedence! There have been times (like recently) that I have had computer issues..and lost all my "incoming mail"...and I always feel so guilty, that I may NOT have responded to some-one I hold dear, here!

I have a choice, right...I choose the pinkish, which on my computer looks "lavenderish" because, forever, I have been searching for a rose, highly odiferous..."Silver Anniversary"! Opens a deep lavender..and gently progresses to soft mauve with silver petal tips..to no avail! I do understand your observations, and have seen it, but also seen it on some very incidental discussions! I can only take charge of me, and give each discussion..my best response! I DO only start discussions, if and when my outside obligations are few and far between!

Have a pick perga.. yellow, pink or red? Those could be exceptions where the mind if willing but the flesh is weak kind of situations or is it the other way around I am confused. But in general I have observed that where there are many responses the quality of interaction gets diluted.

hi allknowing the answer to that is do not make so many discussions you do not have time to answer as its common courtesy to comment on all the responses also since you do not get paid for our responses if you want to earn anything on discussions commenting back to all the responses earns you big earnings. so its worth while to do it.

It has nothing to do with me but a general observation. What if just one topic gets flooded with say 100 responses. It is like posting 100 topics, as each response is worthy of a topic that needs attention.

I know what you mean, and when I was a bit new here, I've had a hard time replying back on the comments I received from the topic I posted. I found out that it's also more difficult if I reply to them in one sweep. I mean, back then, I wait for a day then I reply to the comments. But now, as soon as I get a comment, I see to it that I reply at once. But I never choose which person to reply to or not. I think we should all reply to them. They exerted effort in reading and replying to our topic. The least we could do is to acknowledge their comments.

What I am beginning to understand is that on the one hand we feel happy when we receive many responses and yet on the other not being able to do justice to all the responses received by commenting back and forth in a way defeats the purpose of this site which is DISCUSSION!

I think that if I know I am getting into a busy part of my life, where I cannot monitor a discussion if it blows up, then I will not be making many discussions or really any at all. There have been times where I have been caught off guard. Going to be with something like seven responses and waking up to twenty five or thirty. And that might not have been the most extreme example. I can respond to topics no problem. But given the fact that I don't feel like or have the time to actively monitor any discussions I have, there does not seem to be any point in making them. There are ideas in the back of my head, how good they will do will remain to be seen, but there is a chance that a topic that I might not think get many responses, will blow up pretty quickly. Thus is the nature of the myLot.
