surgical scars

Is it just me but they look ugly, I will rather have multiple tattoos than having them. Few months ago I have an operation and I have this very ugly scar, It looks like a bloated pink work and its damn ugly. I never regret the tattoos I have, but having tattoos and a large surgical scar makes me look like an Ex-convict. I know there are treatments to get rid of scars but you know I have more important things in life to spend money on. I hate surgical scars, I thought only women with Cesarean operation are the only one who hates them but I am a dude who have appendectomy. My girlfriend dont mind it, but I secretly hated it. Its so ugly,it looks gross and I cant stand it, I know there are doctors who are able to stitch scars and make them fade away, I dont know why mine turned into a very ugly keloid.

Mederma, a lotion to help reduce scars, works very well. It works even better if it is till pink and has not yet turned white. I would though, since it has swollen in that area, get it checked out to make sure you don't have an infection or extra fluid that has built up as a result of the surgery.

Its really itchy but I have the willpower to not scratch it, imagine the pain I have to endure. I do hope the lotion you suggested works, I want to make it sink. Its summer and I cant get shirtless in the beach because of it.

Sounds awful. Sometimes some people just scar worse than others, or some injuries/surgeries scar badly. I think the best cheap treatment to get scars to fade away is just time. I knew a guy who'd had a heart transplant over twenty years before and when he showed me the scar I could barely see it. Of course, I don't know what it looked like a few months after the operation but he didn't have any cosmetic procedures done to make it fade and it was practically invisible. Maybe that can offer you a bit of hope. You probably don't want to wait twenty years though.

Well hopefully in 20 years you'll be prepared for the idea of being 47 and the thought won't depress you too much.

Maybe if its at least not itchy, I wont mind having a disgusting scar. I just enjoy every single day in my life, waiting for 20 years is too much, Plus in 20 years Iwill be like 47, ewww that is disgusting... I will be depressed if thats my age.

Oh, they do look different that is for sure. I have a scar that goes clear across my lower abdamin. The scar will minimize over time but it will always be there. There are oils you can use that help and there is a cream you can get that is juct for scars. Some people are turned off by scars but I think that is rather selfish.

That is sad. I wonder if your doctor could help you with this. Sometimes the smallest, silliest thing takes us over and we can't work it through. I grew fast and so I had growth scars. Whatever they are called. They used to embarass me. It is all in how we percieve ourselves.

i know how you feel, my boyfriend has a keloid too in his chest and he hates them so much LOL, and yeah i don't mind it too, i would even kiss it to make him feel better hahahahaha it used to be so small. he had them removed in the states a few years ago but the doctor said it is 50/50 chances that they can make them disappear or make it worse... well the worse is what has happened. it got bigger and i got so mad at his doctor LOL i tell him to just buy some scar removers and try them but he bought one tube and gave it to me for my scars on my legs because of my rashes hehehe... we still hope we can have them removed sometime soon but we are worried it can get worse again. we will see and just hope for the best. you can try dermatix, it says that it can remove and flatten scars and keloids.

hahaha are you serious? with a shirt on? yeah i know, he complains that it is itchy and it bothers him so much too but what i would do sometimes is i rub them lightly and he says it feels good and when it stops itching i would kiss it hehe yeah you can try that, it is a bit expensive but i think we should try it first rather than go to a doctor which would cost us a lot more.

My sister has a caesarian operation scar. It's very long. It gets bigger until it developed into a keloid. She used the cream prescripted by her doctor, but it has no effect. The keloid gets worse because it was always rubbed in her underwear and pants. She wasn't advised not to wear maong pants and underwear with garter. It's her first time, so she never thought she'll have this kind of keloid.

Why not go back to your doctor and ask for remedy? I heard that it can be treated through laser. I read that if keloid will be removed through surgery, it comes back and it appears bigger and worse. That's what I read. I don't know which one is correct and which one is not. It's best to consult a professional doctor.

I have ugly scars too on my body and am very self concious about them due to their nature as well. I feel your pain. Besides I will be getting surgery more than likely soon and will be getting yet another scar to add to my collection. They just keep coming, argh. I'm glad your girlfriend doesn't mind, she is a good woman and she knows that they are just skin deep. Its what's inside that counts, trust me. Just be glad and happy she cares for you no matter what you think of it.

I think you have develop a keloid scar.I have heard that this is not a problem any more because there are available ointments to soften it and and eventually erase it completely. Please consult a dermatologist so that he can prescribe you a proper medicine to cure it.

Try to eliminate the itch by applying some hot water in a small container or bottle. Put it in your keloid scar I am sure the itch will be gone right away.Do not try to scratch it because it would just add the itchiness of your scar and the scar would tend to grow as you keep on scratching it so better make ready your hotwater container to be ready for eliminating your itch.

I am considering that, maybe after my next to salaries, we know dermatologist charges too much with their services. I dont know if ointments works because its huge.

It actually depends on you skin type, that's why you developed keloids. Fortunately I am not the type of person who develops them even if my mother and brothers develop keloids when they have deep scars or wound, either from operations or injections. I always attribute this to my love of tomatoes since tomatoes are rich in Vitamin C. As a child, I would munch on tomatoes as if they were apples and I preferred these over regular chips, sweets or breads that may be offered to me. I have had two surgeries already, one is a major one which removed cysts from my ovaries and another from a big lump on my left hand. My ovarian cyst operation is similar to having a CS done, but thankfully the scar is smooth because the doctor who operated on me is also very vain (she even looks in her 30's when she's already pushing 50). If my memory serves me right, I don't have any stitches to close my wound, rather she used a laser that sealed my wound and even recommended a scar remover ointment if in case I did develop any keloids. Eight years after my operation, no one even notices the scar even if I am in a bikini . I've had stitches for the surgery on my hand. It was just a minor operation with a local anesthetic. I recall that I was getting impatient when the lump on my hand was removed because it took more than 30mins. The reason for that is the doctor who did my operation made sore to get all of that mass in my hand. Fortunately both cysts and lumps that I have are benign ones. The scar on my hand where the incision was made just looks like a regular fold of skin on my wrist. When my scar was new and still fresh, friends and family suggested that I have a tattoo to cover the scar. I never listened to them cause I have a low threshold when it comes to pain. Now you can't even notice it. if you hate your scar that much, then have some cosmetic surgery done on the scar so that you won't notice it anymore.

I just have surgery to remove my appendix and some monster in my spleen, so no surgery for me for now, I think I may consider surgery to get rid of these scars first once I have the money, as you see I do need some cash, I lost a lot of money from my surgery few months, ago, Now its time for me to save lots of money and be rich first. Looking flawless is at the bottom of my priorities at this moment. hope this scar will flatten someday and Please God, get rid of the itch.

Hello Capt, I think the surgical scars are common for all. May be on time it may fade a bit but the marks should be there in our body. Fortunately I didn’t have any major surgery so far but I had one laparoscopic and the small scar is still there. Similarly my hubby went through two surgeries in different times (due to accident) and the scar is there in his body still. So nothing to worry or feel sad.

I also have an ugly scar from my knee surgery. It wouldn't have been all that bad and would have mostly been faded away by now, but my body rejected part of the stitches, and the crazy doctor wasn't careful at all when he was taking out the part of the stitches that was being rejected. He just dug into my knee with tweezers and then cut the stitches with these little scissors. So now mine looks like an ugly worm. I did hate it, but now I'm kind of just used to it and don't really care. I mean, there is nothing I can really do. I would rather not care than have to feel embarrassed all the time. I really like to wear shorts in the summertime and I haven't let my scar stop me. My knee scar is not the only scar I have and maybe that's part of why I've been able to get over the idea of having it showing. I also have a good amount of SI scars that are visible from years ago. I have grown fond of most of them, except for one on my hand that I find particularly ugly; and one of a name on my arm. I used to try all kinds of creams and stuff that are supposed to fade scars, but if you read the active ingredients of these things, it is clear that they really won't work, and they don't. I have tried so many and they are just a complete waste of money. I am sure that there is something that could help; maybe something natural, but it's been so long that I just don't think it would work anymore. Well the good news is that a lot of scars do fade with time. Sometimes it takes years and years, but they can get less noticeable, especially in color, sometimes texture. So there is hope that your scar could improve at least a bit. Anything helps though, right? Well I hope that you can get over the embarrassment of your scar. It's very freeing to be able to accept the things we can't change. Good luck.

Oh, sorry that you have grown that ugly scar (keloids) I don't have it- but still I don't like the line left by C/S operation. I hate the lines- because it reminds me of my frustration not having the capacity of giving birth naturally. About your scar- have it tattooed to hide :)

I had been undergoing tattoo removalsvin the past months though, Plus this keloid is itchy as hell , I think tattoos will make it worst, It just look freaking gross. I am usually shirtless in my apartment, but now I always wear a shirt just ton cover it. I feel angry whenever I saw it. I cant believe that when I was a teen, I think wrist scars are cool. people change as they get older I guess.

Ex-convicts are not the only ones who have had an appendectomy, and I believe you don't show this scar everyday : it is less serious than a scare on the face. A lot of treatments are used for keloids, but they are not completely efficient actually and another surgery would probably make it look worst. Sadly you have to live with it until medicine can remove it : maybe you will like it at this moment...

I just hate looking at it, I hate seeing it, I hate touching it I hate being shirtless in the front of the mirror because of it. Then the worst thing, Its very itchy and swolen. If the keloid will sink, I wont mind the scar, but I hate the keloid appearance,

Thinking again, it is better that you hate it than the opposite : you will avoid to become a scar exhibitionist and to post photos of your scar. Joking apart, have you spoke about it to a doctor and asked if it was possible to do something for you ?

I had cervical spine surgery about 18 months ago where the surgeon went in through the front of my neck. I have an obvious scar there. BUT, it has only been the past few months that the scar has turned white and has no more swelling. These things can take quite awhile before they finally don't look so gross anymore. Give yours time and I'm sure it'll look much better. I don't know if this will help but, when I was pregnant, I was told to use vitamin E oil on my belly to prevent stretch marks. I would poke a hole in a vitamin E gel cap once a day and squeeze the oil onto my hands, then rub them all over my belly and I never got a single stretch mark. I totally believe this worked because my belly was HUGE with my first baby as I had developed a slight case of toxemia (water retention) and gained an enormous amount of weight, still no stretch marks. This vitamin E oil may help your scar to heal faster plus it might get rid of the itching, although that is part of the healing process so, most likely, your scar has not completely healed. If it looks healed on the outside, that's not an indication that it is totally healed on the inside and you may experience itching for awhile yet. Try the vitamin E oil and see if that helps. Other than that, give your scar time and I'm sure it'll look so much better. Look on the bright side, your scar is a conversation starter, a "battle wound" that you can talk about if you can't think of anything else to talk about. I have scars all over my body and that's the way I look at them.

This is the biggest scar I ever had in my life, so i guess that's why I am in a panic about it. I am thankful though its something I can hide under my shirt, I am very health conscious now cos I don't want to have any major surgery ever again. I want to live a long, healthy and happy life. I will try some of the tips you gave and see if they will work, to get rid of the itch is the one I am gunning for. No more itch please... It gave me hard time to sleep and focus.

Hiya captain I have two of those. One isnt a surgical one, it was a cut that I got when I was a kid on my left leg - via a glass. There was a boundary of a house which was locked and our football went into their compound. I jumped over the boundary and when on return, one of those glasses they had to prevent trespassers pierced my left leg. I didnt go for any stitches then and hence it remains. The other one - it was a bizzare accident and I had to stitch my own slit reight near the left elbow. A screwdriver had pierced through and the vein had got cut. It was a sunday and I was all alone so I had no way but to stitch it at home. Later I did go to the doctor who did it the right way but by then, the scars were to stay. Though there was an advert (okay I do remember you and adverts dont go well together just like me) about some ointment which removes scars - surgical and even pregnancy stretch marks, but I never felt the need to try any of those. And of course we both have something more in common between us - the wrist slits

wrist slits are cool but keloid in my torso is not. Its long, its and it looks like something with a life of its own. I just dont feel confident with it around. Its borderline gross. I wont be shirtless in the beach for sure. It looks like a large worm and a small intestine. other surgeons are so good with stiching they dont leave marks. Its been months and its still swollen looking.

I know it's very annoying. I have a huge scar too and I find it ugly. I was even mad at the doctors that they made me so ugly that I can't look at myself. But with time I got used to it, and it fades to light pink, but it takes many, many months. Mine turned into a keloid too, although it's not growing thankfully. I used a cream that is said to be the best for scars, but turned out I'm allergic to it. I'm using calendula cream now. I was wondering if a cosmetical surgery helps removing it or not, but removing a scar with another cut that might leave scar too... I don't like the idea.

I had to have two surgeries on the same spot on my ankle because of a broken bone, and the scar is huge, hideous, and just plain ugly. I told the doctors and everyone else I don't care about it because theres nothing that can really be done about it. I may have to have a third surgery on the same spot, I won't wear pants, shoes, etc that show it, because it's one of the few things that make me truly uncomfortable. So I know how you feel, I don't have much advice on it, but I do know how you feel.
