Homeless People With Animals...

So, the crazy homeless guy I talked about forever ago...We saw him the other day at the gas station. He didn't say anything, I think he knew better. But anyway, his poor dog looked so sick and he looked so bad... I feel bad for the dog, he never asked to be homeless. He is probably so cold and so hungry I am sure. Do you think homeless people should have dogs?

It a one that tugs at the heartstrings for sure. On the one hand the dog is his sole companion and gives him lots of comfort. On the other hand he has a responsibility to look after the dog and that entails having money to feed and pay for vet fees. Really he needs to sort himself out before having a pet. Harsh maybe, but that's how I see it.

I agree with you, his dog is innocent. His dog did not choose to be homeless or choose to be hungry all the time-He Did. So I think its unfair that the dog has to suffer, be hungry and cold outside... It breaks my heart for the dog.

how do we know that both man and dog weren't both home]less strays and they teamed up out of mutual need? or, the dog had been with the guy before a sad economic turn around, and he felt it would be wrong to turn the dog in to the pound because the dog was attached to him and it would have been cruel and irresponsible to give him up? what makes me most distressed that there seems to be more sympathy for the dog than the man- I don't suppose the man wants to be homeless any more than his pet

That might have been his dog BEFORE he became homeless. Having pets can be very therapeutic. My boyfriend is a combat veteran, but when he feels down, he just hugs his dog Yoda and kinda curls into him. Yoda senses his pain, and it makes Jim feel better. I'm sure that this man didn't ask to be homeless either. From what I've seen in documentaries, he's more likely to feed his dog than himself.

Well, in that case, no, he doesn't deserve the dog. Why did his mother not fight for her pet? I would NEVER allow anyone to take my dog from me-and he's really my boyfriend's dog, even though I take care of him more! SMH-why would anyone CHOSE to be homeless?

His mother got the dog because he wanted him, but she had it at her house because he was living there...Then they got into a fight over her rules and he left with the dog even though his mother told him to leave it there. He chooses to be homeless because in his mind its easier to be homeless than to have rules (weird I know). Our neighbor took him in for a few days a while back. The neighbor asked him to do three things in a weeks time, he asked him to rake the yard, vacumn the living room floor and sweep the kitchen. He was living there for free, the homeless guy said I am nobody's slave and he left!! All because he did not want to do a few chores!

It was his mother's dog, who this guy lived with at first but left because he didn't want to live by her rules anymore. He tells everyone he could work but doesn't want to because he doesn't want a boss telling him what to do... He is choosing to be homeless which is why I am saying he does not deserve this dog. The dog had food and a roof over his head before this guy took him from his mother... Just a little background info on this guy...

I think they are human like everyone else, they have feelings and needs, and if a dog give them a little joy in life let them have them.

however your question was should homeless people have dogs, so I answered you. I agree with the commenter who said they probably feed them better than they get fed themselves. I have seen that when I was working with this population,

So you think its okay that the dog is hungry and cold and gets no vet care? I respectfully disagree with you on this one... If it was a stray dog anyway that would be different but this dog had a home and was being fed until he took it...

Hi! I think if one is poor and it is difficult for him to manage his own affairs, then there is no fun of keeping a dog. Dog has its own requirement of food and space, how a poor fellow will meet those requirements.

VANDANA I did not know about Alsatians and moreover I've limited knowledge about dogs as such. However, the thrust of the post is keeping a dog when the owner himself is in doldrums, I expressed my opinion on that point only.

Deepu...you too? I dont know if you know the pets closely enough. Alsatians dont eat if their master has not had meal. They just want to be loved and cared...they are like babies when young, and elderly when they grow old. Love pours from their eyes..try looking into them..just once...you will know you cant get that kind of love from any friend. And poor people dont have many friends do they?

No, I don't think that homeless people should have animals. These people can't take care of themselves and so why would they give an animal a good life? I certainly understand that they must be lonely but an animal is not the way to go. Its a form of selfishness i think.

I don't think so either in most cases...Especially not in this case. This guy chooses to be homeless and his dog suffers with him for it. How is that fair?? It's not! I think he is very selfish since multiple people have told him they would take the dog in and take care of him and he said no.

I am fine with that...honestly, the last couple of days our television has been showing the plight of homeless people in our capital, and I am truly moved to tears, partly out of gratefulness that god didnt give me that fate, and partly because I can understand how horrible it is to be out there on road without proper warm clothing at 2.7 degrees centigrade. We dont mix with them, dont socialize with them, we dont call them over to our parties or marriages. So if having a dog helps them feel loved, its a very small luxury. The dog may be accompanying his master from the days when he was not homeless, or the master may have shared his meals with a dog who had been left on the roads. Whatever the case, it is a right to love. So I am ok with it.

The dog is no fool, neither is the man...he is waiting for the right type of job to come along. The dog would not have come to him, had it got another home where it was loved for and cared for as much as this man is capable of...

This guy chooses to be homeless. He has been offered many jobs and places to live, he turns them all down because he doesn't like rules or chores. And now he brought this dog to suffer with him when the dog already had a home to be loved and cared for in...

Most certainly not, but it does rather depend to some degree on the circumstances. If a person has a dog and then becomes homeless it is understandable to a degree. For anyone to acquire a dog while homeless would be unforgivable because they know full well that they are not in any position to care for the animal properly. I often see people sat in doorways in the centre of town begging, with a dog lay at their side and looking very neglected. I suspect that some of these people are not actually homeless but prefer to berg rather than work. That is their choice, but as you rightly say it is not something that the dog has any choice in at all. They are used as a symbol to extract pity from passers by. We are taught as children that a dog is a responsibility and should be treated accordingly, which does not include keeping it on the street all day in winter or in the rain. It genuinely infuriates me when I see this sort of behaviour.

The circumstances do justify him having a dog since he had somewhere for the animal to consider home at the time. However, we are in absolute agreement that the dog should either have been left at his mother's house, or if that was not possible he should have gratefully accepted your offer to provide a home for it.

It was his mothers dog, well she bought it for him. He was living with her at the time and he left because he didn't like her rules. He became homeless because of rules and he took the dog with him, to suffer with him... We have offered the guy for us to take the dog so he would have a home and food but he said no this is my dog. To me, that is very selfish of him to do that to the poor dog! He will tell you to your face, he can work but he won't because he doesn't want a boss telling him what to do all the time! So yeah, he likes begging better than working.

Is this the guy that DOES NOT want to work? If it is, then a big NO!!, he shouldn't have a dog. That is the most selfish thing he could do is make his dog suffer when this jerk doesn't want to take care of himself or the dog. Now I'm pretty angry. What the heck is wrong with him? I'm sure some homeless people DO take care of their pets and would probably give up their life for them. I give them much credit and I'm sure they feel it is their best friend at the moment, bless their hearts. BUT, this guy, NO!
• United States
5 Jan 13
You could report him, at least for the dogs sake. I'm so angry right now I could spit nails, and it would be right towards him. Selfish is the perfect word that fits this guy. I can't believe he turned you down on your offer..jerk. He only wants this poor dog around so he's not alone in this world, without ever considering what he's doing to this dog. The dog is there only for his own selfish reasons and that's just wrong..period.

Yup same guy! I agree he should not have a dog. I feel so bad for the dog. What's worse is when we were still helping the guy over the summer we offered to take the dog in our house and take care of him! The homeless guy said No. We offered to GIVE him $100 for the dog when it was so hot outside, which would give him money in his pocket and help the dog-he still said no! That shows me how selfish of a person he is... Yeah I was mainly talking about this idiot! He cannot take care of himself nor does he want to much less a dog!

I don't think that you should be able to tell a person that they cannot have pets unless they have a history of abuse with animals. Now I don't know the man that you are talking about and I don't know his situation. However, I would assume that in the economy that we are in right now that there are a lot of people that have lost their homes and when they have to leave, they take their pets with them because their pets are a part of their family.

Friends of fair weather desert, pets dont...how can we deny ourselves that much love? And then, who is to guarantee that the pet would be looked after better than how we looked after it?

Well, I think that some homeless people would want a dog for company. Atleast there would be somebody beside him while he is talking, right? But really, having a pet would somehow make them secure in a way. The bad thing only is that since he has difficulty finding food for himself, then he might not be able to take care of the dog well.

Yeah, that could be sad. We can only hope that somebody could take the responsibility of bringing a sick dog of a homeless person to a vet to be treated....

I just don't think its right or fair to the dog that its hungry and cold...And it gets absolutely no vet care at all because the guy cannot afford to take the dog.

If I were to consider things strictly, homeless people shouldn't have pets as they could hardly feed themselves. But then I'm trying to widen my thoughts on this and came to ask myself when did that man acquire this dog? Was it before he became homeless? Did he ever try to give away his dog for adoption but nobody would accept? Or maybe the dog didn't want to leave his master alone? We all know that dogs are very loyal to their masters especially if they were treated with love and care and dogs could feel when we need them the most. The man is homeless, but I think his dog doesn't feel it is homeless because it is home with its master.

I understand your thinking BUT this guy had multiple people wanting to take that dog and give him a good home. The guys mother, us, our neighbor...we all wanted to take care of that dog and give him a good home. The guy said NO to all of us! So now the dog gets to suffer with him because this man is too selfish to give his dog a good home!

I think I can't make a judgement. Maybe anybody has the right to own a pet whether you are homeless or not. Unless otherwise Animal Welfare groups could lobby for the formulation of a law governing this.

I think everyone should be allowed to have pets as long as they care for them the right way! Pets need to be fed and have vet care.... Most homeless people cannot do this for their pets.

Some people will stick beside their pet forever, and vice versa. Now for me I would give them everything before myself. But if I was living on the street I would ask a close friend or family member to take care of them for the time being. I know they would.
• Valdosta, Georgia
5 Jan 13
Yes some will. This guy however will not. His poor dog is hungry and cold... I feel so bad for it. I agree, I would ask someone else to take care of my dogs if I ended up being homeless again... This guy could have let us take care of the dog, we told him to let us and he would not let the dog go...

Well I'm not a pet hater or something but I'm more concerned for the human before the pet... No homeless people shouldn't have a pet if they can't feed themselves. They have had that pet before though.
• Valdosta, Georgia
5 Jan 13
I'm not concerned for this guy at all just because he doesn't want to get a job or live with anyone because he doesn't like having rules or being told what to do...He will tell you that too! That is what he told us. We offered to take the dog over the summer to get the dog taken care of and fed, but the guy would not let him go...

8 Jan 13
Ah, I see! Well its his foolery then and not some other circumstance that caused him to be on the streets. What a jerk for not letting you take the pet! That's unacceptable especially if he knows the poor thing has to suffer with him. Now I can see your side more...

The other option would be for the dog to be a stray, caught by the pound & euthanized. At least with the homeless man he get's some companionship. The two are probably far better off together.

No, he could have left the dog with his mother where he belongs... he instead chose to make the dog suffer along with him. The dog had a home where it was fed and taken care of...

That's good that the guy feeds his dogs. The guy I know does not feed his dog. If the dog eats a couple scraps its a lot. The poor thing is super skinny and does not look good at all! =( I just dont think its right...

I know of a scavenging couple, homeless but they have a bicycle with a sidecar which they use for scavenging and maybe as home at night. They have two dogs and a cat riding the bicycle. The dogs look well fed and so with the cat. Months ago, this couple did not have a bicycle and I saw the woman carrying the dog like a baby when the dog probably felt tired. My answer to your question is: it depends. There are big houses here of rich people who have dogs and whose dogs are skin and bones.
• Valdosta, Georgia
6 Jan 13
Yeah if they take care of them then its great! At least the animals have someone that love them and they can love. The problem for me with this guy is he does not care for his dog. The dog is hungry, cold and has no vet care at all...

I don't understand it, either. Peeople should be responsible for their animals... the only exception I see is when it's a stray animal basically, but most of the time I see homeless people with dogs, the dogs seem so healthy or... like not a mutt, but a valuable dog. Most of the time they even get the dogs to evoke pity for the dog in the people, and give money... yuck.

I don't believe that people who cannot properly care for themselves should be adopting pets. I can't help to wonder though if the dog was already a stray and they're just both two homeless friends who found each other.

I agree with you. He has no right to have a pet that he cannot afford to feed and take care of. No, the dog was not a stray. His mother got the dog for him when he was living in her house...
