My mom was still working (she used to direct duplicate bridge games), and she was driving either to or from work, when she saw something blow across the freeway off ramp right in front of her. I don't know what prompted her to stop, but she did, and she found a very tiny kitten. He was just big enough to eat on his own, and she named him Pip, short for Pipsqueak.
Pip was probably about 9 when mom passed away. She had told my dad to take care of her cats (they had an orange tabby named Pretty Boy also), or she'd come back and haunt him.
Sadly, a window or something didn't close properly, and Pretty Boy got out, never to be seen again. Mom and dad lived in the Chatsworth hills at the time, and there were coyotes.
Dad remarried, and later moved to Fallon, NV, to work with the naval air pilots. He was an engineer, and his background was in radar technology. So after he retired, he got to teach Top Gun pilots how to interpret radar signals. Pip moved with him and Jane to Fallon.
Today I got an e-mail from Dad with the sad news that Pip had passed away. He included some photos, including the one that I am attaching to this discussion. Very sad. I feel like I just lost another connection to my mom.
RIP Pip: 1995 - 2013

Dawnald I hope that you are fine. You are not alone, I´m very sad to tell you that our dearest "whiskas" passed away yesterday hitted by a car. Everybody here cried loud for her, she was so tender and beautiful. I´m with you in your pain.
Loosing a loved pet is painful too.
Blessings Dawnald... dainy

Thanks you Dawnald for your kind words, thanks you, I feel guilty, I´m usually aware of my cats, I feed them almost three times a day while I cook for our family, but I had an accident 6 weeks ago, and I hadn´t cook, I feel guilty because I think that she missed the common care I gave her. Her special pampers and some special treats.
Our other 4 cats, are here, they have their food as usual, but I used to pamper them all when I was 100% healthy.
However I know that "Whiskas" must be at Heaven.
Thanks you for your kind words.
Blessings

Eighteen years is a good life for a cat. I have known so many cats (and afew dogs) in my life time. Some are so memorable and bring a smile to my face. They each their special ways. We had one at my grandmother's place we called 10 dogs. He was a tiny little guy when I first paid any attention to him. He was scratching on the box grams had under the table in the kitchen. Early in the morning he started this and grams and I couldn't figure out who it was. I went out and got this little tiny cat that had sounded like 10 dogs scratching on the box. He was a fiesty little character.

Lovely cat. I'm guessing it was Hallowe'en when that photo was taken... he's dressed up as the Paper Bag Princess. http://www.amazon.com/The-Paper-Princess-Classic-Munsch/dp/0920236162
Sorry for your loss.

Wow! 18 years is a great life for a cat. Pip was so fortunate that your mom came across his path. I'm sorry for your loss. I'll look for the pic when I get on site. I'm in my email answering this.

All these milestones and markers. I am glad Pip was rescued and had a good life with your mom and then your Dad. I see where you got your love of cats.

It's sad that black cats are adopted less often, they are just as sweet.

I am sorry for your loss.
He really looks very cute and first time seeing a cat dressed in a paper bag, I assumed Pip must be very small considering the size of the paper bag. He must have brought a lot of joy to your parents over the years.

precious baby, rest in peace.
On a side note I love the expression on his face, a mix between "what, don't even comment." and "Why / how did I get in this?
