I know that they didn't grow up with the Internet and some of them came across the Internet in their work in their fifties or sixties age wise. My local library card lets a user have 1 hour of free Internet use. There are beginner courses for computing for the over fifties. Some old people hate Internet shopping because they are worried high street shops might close down. As time moves on more and more people are shopping on the Internet. A lot of old people do not like social networking sites like Face Book. How could these sorts of old people be encouraged to see the Internet in positive ways do you think? Which age were you when you learned how to use the Internet?

to some extend ,internet is just like double side sword, we can get information through it ,but sometimes waste too much time.

The young ones are very benefited from easy use of internet and many people think that the internet is the best way to express yourself. But the older generation don't really have a curiousity or the very need to express themselves through internet like many younger generation have to. So that is why, older generation have the difficulty to see internet in positive way. But some of older generation who is open minded about the advancement of technology seems don't mind it and even feel that internet is very useful for add more information.

My brother who is a couple of years younger then me does not trust the internet and I have been trying to get him to go on it, because well I want to show him photos of my cute grandchildren and do not want to put the photos in an envelope, put do not stamp on it, and mail it. It would be so much easier to email them. I think the old people or people who think they are old do not like the internet because they are afraid that an invisible person will sneak behind them and where they are going or that the internet is not safe especially for banking. It was in the 1980s and I was in my late thirties and early forties. Then they had telephone modems and you had to enter the code on the keyboard, there was also the Commodore 64, etc. And yet now I have some of my friends say that they do not know anything about computers. Well I am not good with electronics, but I am not afraid of using something that goes over the internet.

There is something to be said about life without the internet. I think life back then was much simpler. I think that's why old-er people tend not to like the internet. I don't think that it's the technology that hampers them, rather than the 'simpler' life that they've grown accustomed to. I was already in my early 20's when I was online.

It is always the problem with old people that they cannot take a new technology easily as they cannot adjust with it.

The old people don't like the internet because they are afraid of the new technology. And they are afraid to learn it. Because it is not very easy for them to learn when they grow old. They even may not use the computer well. I started to use the internet when I was 22 years old.

It's difficult to motivate people for change if first they don't want to change. It doesn't mean that what they're doing is bad, it doesn't mean that the internet is better too. There are just those people who refuse change, as they say "why fix something that isn't broken?". My mom is one of them. She's slow in terms of technology and does thing the "old school" ways. But we just let her do her thing. The time when I showed her how the iphone works (because I planned to give her mine when I upgraded) it took several months. But I showed her what she could do with it and she started getting some interest. Then when I asked her if she'd want it (I got my upgrade already) she was delighted because she knew what she could do with it - but of course, there was a slow learning curve using the sms features and all because it would need some getting used to when you upgrade from a keys to a touch-screen. But she's getting the hang of it. But for some reason, I couldn't get to teach her computers. She does well in tablets and phones, but she's really afraid of the computer. She's afraid she'll break it and it takes her longer times to analyze things rather than doing it the way she does best. So, we just let her. :) Maybe you could just teach them one-at-a-time, like the way they taught us painstakingly slow when we were younger. Have a great mylot experience ahead!

Yeah, definitely in my country, old people don't believe what it says on Internet, they prefer their life expereiences and the TV more than that. Originally, my parents didn't like and trust Internet too, but after knowing many of their colleages and frinds who r as the same age as theirs havealready begun to know and shopping online, or browsing news online, they started to ask me how to use Internet. So I think the best way to encourage them to like it is to let them know the examples that people who are as old as they r can use Internet, maybe that will stimulate them like it stimulated my parents. And I stated my computer life since I was 12.

This old person in his 50s is very au fait with computers as are most if the people that I know. Some of whom are in their 90s! However there are many no doubt that have a fear of pressing the wrong buttons and breaking it. Silly though that might sound. Also I know that a lot of elderly people that think that they will get viruses on their computers and will not put their debit/credit card numbers in because they worry about ID theft or card skimming. But the silver surfers are out there and thriving.

Well, people don't like change, especially people from older generations. I know that I don't personally like change either, but only if it's imposed ON me by someone else and it's not something that makes sense to me or has any reason behind it. If it's something I want, then I'm totally behind it. I am a techie, so I can see how important the internet is. I have no idea what is wrong with people who don't want to use it. People think they will get robbed shopping online, nope. The only time something happened to me, I don't think it happened online because it was a card I had not used online PLUS I had recently paid it off so I had no balance. I actually think people who don't like facebook should stay OFF it. The last thing I need is some grumpy disgrunted grouchy person who doesn't like social networking getting on there and griping about everything. Clearly, social networking and email and other internet use makes your life easier. If you live far from family, it's a great thing to use so photos and events can be shared instantly. If people don't want to use it, then they will just miss out. I know that I do what is easy for me as far as sharing things like events, races, vacations, birthdays. I post info online. If people don't go online or to facebook, well, you won't see it. I'm not going to mail letters and printed photos to 20 people. I'm going to post them online once and you can all go and look. That's how it is.

I think I learned to use the internet when I was in high school. During that time, internet is not that a demand but a luxury in our province. Before, if a family does have a personal computer then he must be rich. I guess, oldies do not want to explore internet because they are not used to do surfing and for them they are too old enough to do the same with those of teens and in 30's to 40's.

I started when I was in highschool. That was 10 years ago. My mom is not very good with technology but since she's working in a different country, she was encouraged to learn how to chat, to videocall, to use facebook so she could communicate and keep up with our daily lives. I guess, old people appreciates internet as a means of communication while young ones treat it as a source of entertainment :)

I'm 35 years old now, at the age of 17 i was able to play online games and surf the internet, and its too expensive that time to rent internet, its so funny, when i ask money from my grandma, will i tell her that i need money because i will go to the internet cafe, she says "what is that", i just don't reply, maybe she thinks internet cafe is some kind of a coffee, she heard it as "internet coffee", so then she give me money, but as time goes by she was able to find out what in internet cafe really is, she just laugh because she though internet cafe is brand of coffee. Will i guess its up to us on how to explain to the oldies about the internet, my grandparents were really amaze how we can put pictures in the internet, as a matter of fact they're so interested to learn how to use the internet. As they learn, we encounter problems about them, they spent more time on the internet compared to us, they watch movies etc. So funny.

My mother-in-law was about 70 when she started using the internet. She took a beginners' course and she also asks her family for help. Today she is a member of an online dating site and she spends quite a lot of time online. The libraries in my country arrange courses for people who are new to the internet. Those courses are for everyone, but many people from the older generation participate, and I think that is a nice way to get an introduction to the many things that the internet offers. I was 21 when I used the internet for the first time. One of the teachers from my school introduced us to the internet and we had the chance to surf the internet for one hour. Today I use the internet daily.

Hi ! Some old people can't appreciate internet , they were still hooked with traditional ways , writing manually important matters . They find it more accurate and comfortable with but in the other hand , i have noticed that those oldies who loves writing loves internet also. In one site that i joined most writers are bit adults and they are so good in uploading photos in line with their write ups. I come to think that those who likes internet are the people who have the passion to write and read. Like me i ma so hooked with internet because i am writing and at same time reading following other's write ups.

I know many people who would like to use a computer but they think it`s difficult and never try.In my coutry there are a lot of elderly people whose children work and live abroad and they are motivated to start courses in order to keep in touch. As for me I was 42 when I used Internet for the first time.It was long time ago and since then I can`t imagine my life without it.
