Finally Our Homeless Vets will have Homes

Connecticut takes the First step and the first State to make homeless among Vets a thing of the past. Other States need to follow their example. Around 300 veterans who were described as chronically homeless will now have homes due to the Department of Housing, non profits and volunteers are making this possible. They will also have Support Services available to the veterans. This is one of the best things I have heard all week as our veterans need this, they do not need to be sleeping in the parks and cars. They fought for Our Country and need to be recognized for their contribution and for keeping Us Safe.

That is a really great move and definitely a healthy example has been set. I read about it a few months back when I presume it was still in the making and this is something really good. Maybe off discussion, but I also read somewhere that some celebrities too are working on these lines to provide some of the spaces they have been in possession of for such noble causes. This too can be effective as many normal people do idolize the Celebs.

I think it's wonderful for the state of Connecticut to help vetrans like that. Personally, I believe vetrans should get all due respect. There have been many changes throughout the years when it comes to giving the vetrans the respect they truly deserve. I believe through the state of Connecticut helping vetrans obtain a place to live is not only ideal, but it's the first step in the right direction here in the United States. Hopefully, the rest of the states will follow its example.

I agree whole heartedly with what you have said Kiki. Our Veterans have not been given the respect they deserve but now that will change.

How could they have been homeless in the first place is a question that comes to mind. They need to taken care of on a preferential basis

Yes All they certainly do but then how does anyone become homeless. Perhaps because of mental issues or loss of a job. Whatever the reason it has happened all over the world.

@Marcyaz They are special people and government should have seen to it that they do not become homeless.

I am so happy to see this. This should be done everywhere and I dont know what is taking anyone so long to do it. It is common sense and decency to house and help them, after all they deserve it. So do all homeless too, should be anything done to help. That would be my one charity if I had the means..the homeless. There is no reason for it.

This should never have been continued after all they were in the battle zones fighting and then to come home and be treated like nothing is just not right. I agree all homelessness should not be continued, we should be helping those in need.

I always found this to be horrible how they treat the veterans when they come home after a war or tour of duty. How they can turn their backs on them is horrible. It goes to show you that the government only sees them as numbers and fighters, nothing more. That is sad. I am so glad the they are doing this for the vets. I always believe that they should have completely free medical and be able to go to the doctor and or hospital of their choice. Also they should be paid a salary for the rest of their lives. Maybe not lots of money, but something. And yes, they should always have free housing. That's how I see it. They fought for this countries stupidity and came home damaged in many ways. The least this country could do is take care of them one hundred percent.

They can go to the VA hospitals but sometimes there is a long wait and by then it could be to late. If they stay in the service long enough they can draw a pension but I am not sure now how long it is something like 20 years I believe. Housing should be a number one priority for the vets that is for sure. We don't want them to be out on the streets begging for food when they are the ones who fought for our liberties. I fully agree we should take care of them one hundred percent.

Unfortunately as far as I still know they can only go to the VA hospital which some of them are not fit for anyone to stay at.

@Marcyaz I believe that as well. They need to change the structure for our soldiers. The VA hospital was always not a good place to go. Maybe they are understaffed or not enough of them. It shouldn't be like that. And they should be able to draw a pension anyway. They go and fight for this country and most don't come back home. That is a horrible thing. And the ones that do come home are just pushed aside.

Yes it is time that our veterans have a roof over their heads as they were the ones putting their lives on the line for our Freedom. They have been treated badly for way too long.

I know and I hope that other States will follow the example of Connecticut as to the VA they don't seem to care about the veterans either and I don't feel they are really helping them. Okay enough said by me on the VA.

@DWDavis They are not thought of very highly in the Phoenix, Arizona area with all the stuff that had recently been found out how they were not making appointments for vets and letting them suffer it out. Big shake up was going on there and a friend needs a lung transplant because of Agent Orange and the VA doc will not approve it. I really don't expect him to hang on much long. How sad a vet can't get the help he needs.

@Marcyaz I think the attitude of the VA depends on what part of the country you are in. Veterans I know, including my dad, think very highly of the VA clinics here in eastern NC. But then we have a lot of active military bases in our part of the state. I think that makes a difference.

I am glad that they are taking care of them. There is something weird going on in several European countries, they help illegal immigrants and do not care to find a home for the local homeless. This is wrong.

Anna, it is the same here taking care of illegal immigrants but forget about the local homeless people. That is not right and we should change how we do things and take local people into consideration before someone who has come into our countries illegally. I say send them back where they came from and charge their Country for what it cost us then maybe people will stay where they are or come through legally.

Simone, I know it is just terrible the way they have been treated. Finally they will be treated like they should be and have a normal way of life, at least as normal as can be for them.

With all due respect they are not the first State to do this--also 300 seems a very small figure for Connecticut even if they are defined as chronically homeless

From what I read it is the first State but of course maybe they are the ones who are doing the most for their vets, yes I thought it was a small figure also but I would suppose not everyone wants to be in the system. I think it would be hard to go out and find everyone who would qualify.

It sure would be scary to not have a home to go home to in the evening. I don't know how they have manged to keep their sanity. Finally something is being done to help them have a nice environment.

Yes I think most of us have seen the vets on the street corners with signs asking for help, the poor guys. I know I personally have seen lots of them and have given a few bucks if I have any cash with me, to me so they can at least buy a doughnut or something. It is so sad and I always wished I could do more as my husband was a war veteran also but was not homeless. Who knows where we will be a year from now, it could be one us out there with a sign asking for help.

It is a first step. I think that nobody should be homeless. Housing right is a constitutional right in my country, and several other European countries (Spain, Portugal, Greece, Switzerland and Finland). It means that only people wanting to sleep in the streets are in the streets, and that the state offers a roof to every homeless. It is a matter of human dignity, and I don't care to pay more taxes for these people, it is a good cause.

That is wonderful Topffer that your Country and others do help and only those wanted to stay in the streets are in the street, also they offer a roof to every homeless person. The US should be ashamed for the way they have treated their veterans to leave them out on the streets.
