Tuning in and being mindful

I once wrote an article on mindful eating. I found that so interesting. I think tuning in to our own needs and that of others is so important. So much fighting and ugliness in the world. If people who say they love their partners would stop, tune in and evaluate what the other person is saying and perhaps even try to understand how they are feeling before they respond to them, then make a sound decision and speak from that instead of a knee jerk reaction we would all be so much happier and live more enhanced lives. What do you think?

A lot of society's ills would be remedied if we would just pay attention.

Yes, GG, you are so right. If only we would pay attention the other person a bit more.

and think about how it would feel if we were on the other side of the fence.

I am not sure if many of us know our true needs. People create an idea of what they think they need and try to achieve that. We should remember every day, to be mindful of ourselves and of people around us. We get selfish and careless in relationships and we manage to damage them because we only think of ourselves.

Quick Story... I went to my children's neurologist's appointment the other day. She has known us since my 8 year old was 5 months. I was telling her that i needed about a weeks worth of pills because of something that had happened. I had a seizure while holding the boy's pill box and it got dropped and spilled everywhere. We finished our visit and as we were leaving she called my neurologist and told her that she thinks I may need an increase in my medication. She said "she is a very good mother who takes great care of her family but isn't so good at taking care of herself." I am very good at tuning into others and being aware of them.... not so good at taking care of me. I think that if people took the time to look out into the world, past the darkness, and started to see other people and what we really need (stability, basic needs met, love, and understanding - that kind of thing) the world would be a much nicer place with less pain and suffering.

....and if that started from the kids up then people would all be happier. But, it also starts from within. I hope you are going to give to you too.

I agree, we could all benefit from thinking before we speak or make decisions. You can say a lot of hurtful things if you are not careful and think first.

@celticeagle Exactly! It's so odd. Why can't we just slow down and think? Why is it so hard for us?

That surely is the key to making friends! Being mindful of others, rather than ones self. It always pays richly in life.

Being mindful of the other person is being a friend. In more ways than one.

I have to agree with that. Listening is an art. Constructive discussion is an art. Yet emotions can annihilate those skills!

It is something we have to work at just like anything else that we want to be good at doing.

Too many people only think about themselves and were never taught to think of others first..it all comes from how they were raised.. I try to teach mine that way to help and hopefully they have learned to pass that onto their children...we do have too much ugliness in the world.

Self involved is one of the characteristics of narcissism. It is prevalent. I try to live by the golden rule. There is a lot of ugliness and self serving people in the world and many of them are in government.

True. If we could see from their perspective, Or just imagine ourselves in that situation. It could result in great peace & harmony.

Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. Think about the other guy and how he might feel. It's a good practice to get into.

I agree many people do not listen to what is being said, and jump in with a response before really thinking about what was said, if we take time to answer a much better level of communication and understanding would take place...

They care too much about what they are going to say. Taking a little time for others is a good way to live ones life. It's rather tough to do at times.
