Should we stop using a clothes dryer to save money?

Many can't afford the cost of using a clothes dryer and have to hang laundry outside. Some are working so much they don't have time to hang laundry outside and feel the dryer is the best choice for them. How much money would you save if you could hang clothes outside to dry? There are several online sites that will help some determine the best choice. Hanging laundry outside to dry is a major chore for most. Do you use a dryer or hand clothes outside?

I have been doing this for years to save money, we have a dryer and I use it for whites and towels. Seems like we saved about $50 when I first started doing it, not sure how accurate that is now days. Our dryer is old so no telling how much it costs to run it.

@mom210 Whites can get even whiter in the sunshine, Kimberley. My towels dry on the stiff side outdoors, so I can understand why you'd want to dry them in a dryer.

@Sheilamarie78 If you put them in the dryer for about 10 - 15 minutes they will fluff right up. We just go through so many towels I chose the towels to be dryed more as a convenience. I have a lot of teen boys, just gotta shower daily so I can stand to be around them (stinky)

I hang my washing outside almost every day. If it's raining, I wait until the weather is better. Electricity is just way too expensive where I live. Besides, I also love doing it and I do love the way it smells. I think the sun kills all kinds of germs too!

You are no doubt right about the sun and the germs!

And the sun can help bleach whites too!

I use a line when the weather allows to hang clothes outside. I have a dryer that I only use when it rains or it's too cold.

As a young child growing up that is how we dried our clothes on the line. I still do that now occasionally even though I have a dryer

I love to hang my washing in the fresh air, no amount of scented laundry conditioners etc can beat it. And it's free and environmentally-friendly.

I have never used a dryer and would not even consider buying one. Whether or not I could afford to use one would not alter the fact that the running cost is very high and in my opinion unjustified.

I can't afford to have someone put a clothes line in, I'm much rather hang em outside to dry if I could.

We stopped using ours years ago because of the cost. Hanging clothes outside is quite the norm in New Zealand

Now I use a dryer but sometimes in the past I have used the line as I liked it a lot, but you are right it is a lot of work.

I hang my laundry outside. We use solar power and hanging laundry outside is solar power, too. I love that fresh air smell!

I am a dryer person and haven't hung anything outside in years. As much as I used to love smelling freshly dried clothes from outside my allergies would kick in and my laundry would constantly make me sneeze. Now everything goes in the dryer

We use the dryer, part of it is because we don't want to hang dry the clothes, okay mostly because of that, and partly because there are several months where it wouldn't be feasible to dry them outside. In the winter my clothes would freeze before they dried.

I hang my washing in a glass roomed house indoors and hang big things like sheets over my bannisters which have been treated with Marine varnish

Though once in a while I do use the dryer, when there is sunlight I prefer to put the clothes on a clothes line to get them dried.

I doubt the savings of not using a dryer would be pennies. I wouldn't live w/o mine. I hung clothes out one - bird pooped all over - had to rewash - that's not a money saver if you ask me.
