Keep Mobile on Airplane mode while you sleep

I generally keep my phone on airplane mode while I go to sleep at night. I am following this from the past 3 months and have observed a difference. I get a sound sleep now. What's your take on it.

Continued vibrations, radiations and blue light from the phone affect normal sleep. People sleep less and are becoming less adept at what they do during daytime. So it's good you get it to ariplane mode. I personally keep my phone far away so that I won't be able to see it, and when the alarm rings, I have to get up to stop it, so there's less chance of shutting it up.

It is good to keep our phone away so as not to get affected by its radiation and if we have set up an alarm, it forces us to get up and switch off the alarm.

Keeping phone on silent before goin to sleep is the norm at my place. But scientifically speaking, it doesn't matter if you turn it off or not, what matters is the time interval between you having last stared at the screen and you hitting the pillow. The blue light tinge in your cell screen light triggers chemicals in your brain that are associated with you remaining awake. So you watching your cell is actually you telling your brain to stay awake. There should be a 1 hr gap between the two for you to reallllyyy get a sound sleep.

A very scientific explanation! But there can be other reasons for insomnia too!

@dpk262006 I have not seen anything called offline so don't think I have that option.

Flight mode facility is available on smart phones. If this mode is turned on it disallows outgoing and incoming calls. In some other phones, there is an option called 'offline', if you press this option outgoing/incoming calls get barred

Airplane mode is when the phone stops functioning as a phone, but other features like music, camera etc still continue to work!

What does the airplane mode do? Will you still be notified if you get a call or text?

@anushreem Then if airplane mode shuts the network down it won't work for me as my cell is the only phone I now have and in case of an emergency I wouldn't be notified so I will not use the airplane mode but thanks for the information on it.

@anushreem .....I wish it had a mechanism to turn on at a certain time.

No airplane mode shuts the network! So it is not possible to get a call or text in that case.

I leave it on since it hardly ever rings unless something urgent crops up and someone is trying to reach me..

@anushreem Yes thats true, I keep it away from me...I keep it on because I have had two incidents where something serious had happened and my relatives were unable to contact me because my cell was switched off, now I guess I am being extra cautious !

True. Even I used to keep it on for the same reason. For emergency purpose anyone can call us, so even I used to keep it on.

But when it is on, RF-EMF transmissions are on from mobile phones which is not good for health in a long run

It's a new information for me! Let me try during my next air travel. But I would like to know the benefits of airplane mode and how to do this on a Nokia model which is more than three years old.

On air travel, it has to be in air plane mode only, unless you switch it off. For sleeping, I prefer the silent mode.

@SHARINGPARTHA do not remember the functionality in Nokia phone. The best you can do is to switch it off

I sometimes keep my phone on 'flight mode', while sleeping. I've not closely observed if it helps in sound sleep. . It all depends how tired I am, if I am tired, sleep catches me up quickly. Otherwise, I prefer to switch it (mobile) off when I am going to sleep. If mobile remains 'on', it keeps radiating and some applications keep running in the background, which drains out the battery . I do not like to be disturbed by a phone call, when I've gone to sleep, therefore, I switch it off, most of the times.

@ria1606roy - I fully agree with you that mobile phones are for us (or say for our convenience), we are not for mobile phones. I normally switch my phone off when going to sleep, so as not to receive any SMSs etc.

yeah and moreover, the phone is for our convenience. It doesn't help when it is the cause of disturbance to us, because we don't need that. And I kind of hate the messages that enters late at night. Always makes a loud sound.

I just leave mine on, as i get notifications, and I want to keep up with them, as i get a lot on my phone. I put it beside me on the bed. I don't get phone calls, but I still leave it on, becasue my son requested that I do so, in case he needs to get a hold of me.

@anushreem It is much easier to just keep it on, just in case, and shut it off, and maybe misss something important. I never know when I might have to be there for my son.

Mine is always on. But I placed it away from me. However, there are times that I forget it's on my bed and I just discover it when I woke up in the morning. I'll try to make it on airplane mode too.

I just leave it as it is because if there's any emergencies, I want to make sure I'm notified. But then again, I live in a tsunami prone zone so that's why I'm worried.

But since you have network in your phone while you sleep, it still emits frequency which is harmful for your health in a long run

Hi This is a good idea for those who used to get any kind of notifications from phone. But mostly I don't get any call or message at night. So I don't switch it off. And it don't disturb my sleep as well.... I have to keep it on as I don't want to miss any emergency call if something happens.

Yes.. I have heard about it. But can't do anything. As emergency can come any time. But I put my phone away from me on table. So may be it doesn't effect me more.

I agree with the fact that cellphones are one of the major cause for insomania. If u want to get a good sleep u shud keep it at a managable distance. But i don't think it is necessary to keep it on flight mode because u don't know when it is a urgent call.

Yes I agree, that we might get an urgent call..But I generally keep it on airplane mode at 12am and get up at 6am so that is a short duration

@anushreem its ok.....but you don't know.......when u will get a call..............it may happen once in a while...but probability of getting call at odd hours is always there..and u don't know its urgency untill u don't pick up.....
