The French Riviera has known a terrible flooding the past Saturday night.
Nineteen people have been killed and some are still missing.
I have several friends who live in that area and I am glad to know they are safe, even if some material damages.
The small town Mandelieu-la-Napoule, south west of Cannes, has been one of the most damaged by the floods.
This is the place where I have spent my first vacation with my husband, my fiancee at that time.
It made me so sad to see those beautiful places covered with debris left by the water.
I have lived in that area for 30 years, I have never seen a similar phenomenon.
You can see a view of Mandelieu, I took not many years ago.

This is the first that I have heard of that incident, but it does not surprise me.
The current environmental conditions have made most places prone to extreme patterns of that and similar nature, which is not likely to improve and most probably will become more commonplace.

I am seeing huge weather changes and its sad when people don't survive because of the weather. Several people in my area didn't make it including the hiker and the rescue people couldn't save the person in the vehicle. Its sad to see how fast the water came down.

@LadyDuck That is the problem in my area to many houses near water and on the hills or at the bottom of the hill. Several friends keep leaving their homes this winter because of the rain. The mud and rocks are coming down and landing on homes.
When my husband and I decided to move here we talked to many people about the chance of flooding, as this house is in the flood zone according to the insurance company. The city has worked hard putting in better drainage and dealing with the power lines. My street didn't flood, so the drainage is good here. Some of the other areas were in trouble and need better solutions.

@Fishmomma When it rains for many days and the rivers come out of their beds, there is no drain that can save those houses. We are uphill here, there is no risk of flood.

Oh no...I'm sorry to hear about the flood. I hope they find the missing ones very soon. So sad to see natural disasters happening in so many parts of the world lately.

I went to Cannes in 1990. I haven't seen that area since then.

@LadyDuck Probably a lot in my case. Although 9 years changes a lot as well.

I have seen the terrible flooding and damage caused on the news Anna. It looked horrific cars just thrown about like they were little toys. They had around six inches of rain fall in two hours. That is an incredible amount of water to fall at one time.
We had a similar flood here in the UK around 3 years ago when a flash flood ripped through a tiny village devastating it and the water smashing anything in its path.

@LadyDuck Yes it was awful Anna. I remember a similar thing happening in Mauritius a couple of years ago. A freak rain storm and some people took refuge in an underpass and drowned!

Looks like a lovely area, Anna. It's hard to look at areas devastated by flooding and other disasters of that type, and it's hard for the areas to get back to normal if they ever can. It is sad to see that sort of thing.

All that flooding was horrible. Some of our southern states here in the US are experiencing the same thing right now
