Indigenous Peoples' Day: Movement to Rename Columbus Day Spreads Across US
Columbus Day takes place on Oct. 12, and Native American activists around the country have been working to have the annual holiday renamed. Eight cities have declared Oct. 12 Indigenous Peoples' Day.
I have been waiting for this change for many years and feel not only does CC need to be taking out of the History books, but the children should be told the truth.
What do you feel about this who live here in America it affects you?

I dont think we should take anything out of the books per say, but things do need to be corrected that's for sure.

@Jessicalynnt they are writing new books all the time so it wouldn't actually be written out of an old book but be revised to truth time

@Rosekitty some of those books are worse, they take things out, or call things like the civil war, the little dust up in the south. that one made me giggle

@Rosekitty There is what we say about CC "CC is the perfect politician, he travel and he does not know where he goes, but he always do that without paying a penny".

I dont care about what they name it. Practically, naming does neither change the sun or the moon. And I have my weird theories too
I only dont want them or anyone to name a day after me
On the serious sides, I do agree with @PhredWreck - the truth is what is important and that must be taught.

I think you could have both. Why do we have to get rid of Columbus Day to have Indigenous Peoples Day? For one thing, the day would be forever marred by the attitudes of those who resent Columbus Day being taken away.
Whatever else may have happened, one has to acknowledge the hardships of the journeys that Columbus made, and the courage it took to make them. At least half of what the revisionist historians are now laying at Columbus' feet were acts committed by the men who came with him, and the governors set in power by the Spanish monarch. As for the rest, well the slave trade would have happened regardless of who was in charge of the voyage. It was 1492, capturing slaves was quite normal and would have happened even if Columbus hadn't been there.
The treatment of the native peoples offends our 21st century morality, but Columbus wasn't any less politically correct than anyone else of his day.
Not everything we learned about Columbus was true, and not everything they are saying about him now is true, either. The truth lies somewhere between. But we should still recognize the importance of his voyages.
And we can recognize the indigenous people as well. We don't have to choose to recognize only some parts of history and blot out others. I don't trust anyone to be in charge of that.
