The last time I had to call in to the local doctors was last month when Little One suddenly got severe conjunctivitis. I had to rush there on a Friday late afternoon, dreading the experience, and was pleasantly surprised when I was greeted by a receptionist I hadn’t seen before, a lady who was very friendly, pleasant and helpful. I was taken aback as the previous times I have had to go there the receptionist has been a sour-faced woman who made everyone wait as long as possible while she gossiped in the back office, and seemed to feel that her personal duty was to save the doctors from actually having to see any patients at all! Last week Big One hurt her foot in gymnastics class and it still isn’t better so I thought perhaps we should get it looked at. I called round at the surgery and was even more surprised to find a second, equally pleasant new receptionist, a young man this time. Unfortunately they are full today and I will have to call in the morning but at least he was apologetic and told me this in a nice way. Is this a sea change in attitudes to patients I wonder? Perhaps you have just been lucky to run into pleasant people, or maybe most of them are and you were unlucky enough to run into only the unpleasant ones before.

I don't know, I don't go often, I'll have to call in more frequently now just to test the theory!

I can see that you are from England as here in Canada we use the word "clinic" instead of surgery.

I am happy that we usually find very nice receptionists at doctors offices and hospitals here. I have rude nurses that try to keep people away from "their" doctor.

I have never run into a rude or nasty receptionist, except one at a school in which I taught. Even the parents were afraid of her! Hope your daughter heals quickly.

I find now a days this tend to be popular in offices. I once went to the specialist (waiting over 6 months to get in then waiting in the office 3 hours after the appointment was) while the secretaries yapped, and flirted with the doctor. My regular family doctor about 3 of them at the front desk, yet they can never answer the phone, and never happy as they don't look up while they are having a conversation as I wait for them to put my info into the system.
