Next stop on my road trip north yesterday through the central North Island was at Taihape (loosely pronounced Ty-happy) for lunch. This is a tiny town of only about 2000, but an important one as it's on State Highway 1 and is a central stopping place for refreshments and such for those travelling north and south. I'd hoped to get a photo of the main street, but as this is a long weekend it was extremely busy and parking was at a premium. Instead I headed a short distance out of town to this lovely old-fashioned roadside restaurant. The food is not bad, the coffee passable, the service friendly and there's plenty of parking. Taihape is an important railway stop and was important as a base in the building of the main trunk line in the late 1800s. These days rail is not such a popular mode of transport and coaches or buses serve the town as transport. Taihape is known as the gumboot capital of the world, a self appointed title. I'm not sure if they're called gumboot elsewhere - galoshes, rubber boots, wellingtons? Taihape serves a wide reaching farming area and gumboot of course are worn in wet muddy weather. Each year the town hosts a gumboot festival, the main attraction being a gumboot throwing competition. I'll try and get a photo of a large gumboot sculpture on my way home. So, there I was, about halfway through my journey by lunchtime. I hope you're enjoying following me on a map.

Great.. my dad always called them Gumboots but the trendies of today call them Wellies, in all their bright and lurid designs... not something my dad would have worn though...happy travelling!

@valmnz Are they the type of high boots that fishmen used out in the water?

@Marcyaz similar, not high, just up to knee, the farmers wear them in the mud.

It's quite dated and worn, but still a popular shopping place.

We call them gumboots and we have worn them with ladies having them just up to the ankle.

@allknowing therefore probably not the gumboots I know. Ours are strictly for walking through puddles, gardening or down on the farm!

I don't think I've ever owned gumboot as I'm quite a city person. But my husband and son wear them in the garden and other similar places. They're definitely a must on the farm.

@valmnz normally that would be my thoughts, this year I may need something. I am thinking some water proof hiking boots might be the way to go

@valmnz It's good to see that there's more to NZ than sheep and more sheep - that's the impression I picked up. Thanks for rectifying it.

Why would anyone think that, we only have twenty million of them! Most people think we are only lakes and mountains.

@valmnz You also have some place names that present problems to people from other places: we all do!

We call them gumboots or wellingtons. The railway has been phased out in many of our country areas too. I think it's a step backward really.

What a nice little restaurant Val. I never heard the therm gumboot, but I know what galoshes are. It is interesting to know that this little town is the galoshes capital of the world.

They'd be horrified at them being called galoshes, too English, not Kiwi style at all

@valmnz Galosce is how we call them in Italian and galoches in French, no one would guess what the other words mean.

I grew up saying "rubber boots" but my Canadian hubby always says "gum boots" and now I do, too, as I like the sound of it.

I'm enjoying the trip Val. We often had gumboots as kids, they were chunkier and heavier than normal wellingtons.
