Have you ever ridden a train any long distance?

Every summer I usually have my youngest grandson with us as his mom works full time. My daughter use to meet me on a Friday night when she was done working and I would get him again Sunday night or Monday morning. That was before we moved to Florida and she still lives in New Jersey. When my husband and I moved to Florida we took the Amtrak which carried our car also. It was convenient but so bumpy. I said never again. My husband had a bad knee, which he had operated on after reaching Florida. My daughter and I were talking about her taking the Amtrak down after school lets out so I can have my grandson here until August. We have a wedding in New Jersey so we will be going up there the beginning of August. I am trying to think of any other alternatives. Maybe a Greyhound Bus. I will have to check that out too.

I prefer the train when i travel to California from texas where i live..it takes me a day and a half but i like traveling that way and looking out the windows and visiting with people.. I couldn't handle the long bus rides so that is out for me..

I think the next time, if we ever go on a train again, I will just sit in the chairs instead of the sleeping room.

@Rosekitty Normally I would have gone to sleep but with a bum shoulder and my husband on crutches with a bad knee, we found it horrible. I would consider trying it again under different circumstances.

You are lucky it isn't that far for you not like me. My grand kids have to fly 8 1/2 hours to come and see me. There Mom has to drive them to LAX and they get on a plane to Tahiti. It is a long flight for them but they love it. They are alone and the people take care of them on the plane. Ac coding to them they get special service and extra attention.

@ramapo17 The first time they came the youngest was 9 and turned 10 here. His sister was 11 and turned 12 here. The airline takes really good care of them and it is an excellent program they have.

I take it that airfare is too outrageous. I'm really no help at all, I live in southwest texas and it's either car, greyhound or plane. The trains we get here are only freighters, no more passenger trains.

Sorry, I've never ridden a greyhound @ramapo17 I usually drive where ever I plan to go and haven't been on a long trip since the late 70s.

What is it like to take the greyhound for a long ride. I am thinking of trying that. It takes us 20 hours by car to go from south Florida to northern New Jersey.

@rebelann I am still trying to decide. Usually my husband drives when we go anywhere as he thinks I do not know how to. I have been driving for so long and I am older than he is but he likes to be in control. I want to go up to New Jersey early to help my daughter with some things so I would be going alone whichever way I decide to go. I hate flying to begin with so going alone makes it much worse in my mind.

Sometimes you get better rates than waiting until the last minute @jaboUK.

Yes I have, but it has been a while. The last one was when I was traveling through the Netherlands, France and Germany back in 2005. Long distance traveling by bus is fun too.

That sounds like a nice trip. Just seeing those countries would be very nice @cahaya.

I have taken the train from Alberta to Ontario. I loved it and loved sleeping in the sleeping berth and being rocked to sleep. I would far rather take a train than a greyhound!

I thought that was going to be the way for us but it was terrible. I felt like I was being beat up and boy the train was flying.

Did you ever go any distance on the greyhound? I did long trips on buses when my daughter marched in Drum Corps but the longest was 12 hours.

@ramapo17 that is too bad that you didn't find it enjoyable.

I had experienced a long distance (500 kilometers) train ride . . that was 25 years ago back in the Philippines. I loved it. But here in Calgary I just take the LRT (citywide) once in a while.

I think I will try it again. I do like being on the ground better than in the air although the last train ride the train was going so fast I swore we were going off the tracks.
