A nice view of the Golden Gate Bridge on this afternoon's hike

My 14-year-old kid client and I took a nice hike this afternoon/evening on the Inspiration Point trail in Tilden Park between Berkeley and Orinda CA. Given the recent rains, we knew it would be nice and clear, so I brought my camera. We timed it so we'd catch the sunset on the way back. These days, the sun is setting (at about 5:30 PM) just North of the famous Golden Gate Bridge. We talked about a lot of things, including school, art, and even science. We saw lots of birds, one bunny, and one coyote, who was only about 30 yards from us. Do you think hiking and talking is a good form of therapy for struggling kids? Are there "nature opportunities" where you live? Note: You really have to click on the picture if you want to see the bridge clearly.

Neon Rider- old Canadian TV show. I wish I could get episodes of that. It was a ranch for troubled youth. Super show. The premise: group therapy and horses that needed taking care of and barns that had to be cleaned. I also wish I could go for a hike with you. Like I've said before, I think you might have been a good mentor for me when I was a goofed up kid. Or maybe I just need to be a loner, whatever age I happen to be.

My horse used to be my co-therapist. I put a lot of kids on her. A (human) horse friend and I used to talk about putting a horse ranch together for troubled kids. But life got in the way of our dreams.

I also took a photo of the sunset yesterday. The sky was not clear, but the effect very nice. I think that getting closer to the nature is a good therapy. We have plenty of "nature opportunities" in our area.

When I think of Switzerland, I think of beautiful mountains.

@TheHorse We see the snow on the mountains in the distance. Here in the south it's still pretty warm.

@LadyDuck I wish I could remember where in Switzerland I lived for a few weeks when I was four. We lived in Italy for a year, and spent some time in Switzerland. My parents are gone, so I can't ask them about the specifics. I remember that a preschool teacher got cross with me because I heard the word "cottage" in a story (during story time) and blurted out "like cottage cheese?" I felt sad for a few minutes. I honestly can't remember if the interaction was in Italian or English. I'd guess English, as the Italian word for cottage cheese probably doesn't overlap with the word for "small cabin in the woods."

Beautiful view. The even colour is not a common sight.

We could see the fog rolling in beyond the bridge, but there were no clouds, so everything was uniform.

I think that it would be very effective. I have wonderful conversations with my son and husband when we walk or hike.

I prefer to be moving when I have conversations with people. Among other things, it makes the silences less awkward. And it's during silences that we "process" stuff.

@Tampa_girl7 Oh, thanks. I love taking pictures of the Golden Gate at sunset.

Yes, but your areas are prettier, since you have more rain (usually) up north. Our wild areas are full of scrub plants. Although some people think they are lovely, I do not. I like super green forests with flowing streams. But I cannot handle the weather, so I live where it is dry and mild.

I'm kind of the same. I live in almost-coastal California but dream often of mountain streams and pine trees in the High Sierra or Montana.

I'm sure hiking and talking is good therapy. I knew a guy once who would go riding with his kids. He said they would talk about all sorts of things. 'Talking' in that sense didn't happen so much elsewhere.

I think being out and walking...or riding...makes people feel more comfortable...
