Clever Recycling of Wine Barrels

Recycled Wine Barrels

Part of our tour of Northern Ireland included a visit to Bushmills Whiskey Distillery. We found all the tours at the various sites were very good value, often lasting an hour or more. I was intrigued by the conveyor belts and automation which filled bottles, attached lids and labels then filled boxes and sealed them, all without human intervention. We were given a small nip of whiskey at the end of the tour. I loved these chairs and table make from old wooden barrels. These tub-type chairs are remarkably comfortable. Unfortunately they wouldn't fit in the motor-home. A few years ago, I had some half-barrels filled with flowering plants. I thought they were really lovely but the termites discovered them and ate them. I think they liked the sweetness from the wine. Have you ever recycled wooden barrels? I guess there are many items which could be made from them.

I have used barrels as planters and as a toy tub for my daughter when she was little.

@JudyEv I was lucky. Mine did not deteriorate, and I had them for several years.

I loved my planter boxes but they eventually disintegrated. They weren't cheap to buy so I replaced them with other pots.

Not wooden barrels but I plant in plastic and gunny bags, plants that are seasonal

A great way to use the old barrels - wouldn't mind having such furniture myself and the whiskey too of course

People come up with some very creative ideas, don't they? I really liked the chairs.

@JudyEv I can picture my grandchildren having races with those chairs since they're on wheels LOL

i love that they have wheels, including the table. makes them easy to move around... or yourself... or push someone. i like the floor too, looks non-slip.

The wheels are a good idea I think. My lounge are always getting moved. I sometimes wish they had wheels.

I rather like the way they've been made into furniture there. I had to laugh at the thought of your termites, they must have had quite a party!

Tipsy termites! The barrels were quite expensive at the time which is one reason why we didn't replace them with the same.

I read somewhere (was it from you?) that the barrels they age even single malt Scotches in are often old Burbon barrels from the US...to add a bit of extra flavor. If I had more room here, I'd use barrels for planters.

They mentioned using used barrels when we did the tour. As with any industry, there is a lot more to making whiskey than I ever imagined.

We did the Jameson Distillery tour in Dublin and they talked about all the different things they do with the barrels but furniture was not something they mention. Looks like a great use to me.

My son's friend made some lovely bar stools from big drums. You could possibly put legs on these to make them into stools. We toured Guinness in Dublin. That was interesting too.

They look beautiful. We do not get these barrels here.. I generally recycle everything wooden and everything recyclable.

Bushmills was one of my favorite whisky, but now it is too expensive. I believe that those ones are whisky barrels, usually the sine barrels are much larger.

You are right about them being whiskey barrels. We didn't buy any either although we got a bottle of Glenmorangie coming through the Duty Free in Perth.
