Don't be anxious mylotting friends, or least don't be too anxious!

Anxiety and fear, panic and worry all have their purposes in our lives. Just like pain, everything has it's place and reason for being. It's when the thing becomes over active and all encompassing that it becomes a problem. Just like a tree growing too close to a house, anxiety can cause more problems than it helps if it's allowed to grow all willy-nilly and out of control. Yes, that tree might shade the house, but the roots could also be damaging the foundation, the sap could be hurting the roof. Anxiety can steal moments, hours, days. You can't think straight, see straight, feel straight. It's hard to function. You have to fight past the emotions to do...well anything really. You have coping techniques, medicine, things that help...sometimes. Sometimes they don't, and those are the times that annoy me the most. You often feel as though you can't talk about it. Not to your spouse, because it's always there, it's always a problem, so it becomes that story you always tell about that one time, that you feel they have heard so many times they no longer want to listen. Maybe they even don't, maybe they do, but that's not the point. I used to have cycles of mess, but for long periods would be fine. I used to be able to manage months of fine. I know what broke the camels back, I know what made it worse. I like the direction my life took after that time, but still, that time itself broke me. You may be able to glue a broken vase back together, but the cracks are always there. It may not hold water at all, maybe it has a slow leak, maybe it does hold water but looks terrible. That's me. I am the vase that's glued back together and has a variable leak depending on the pressure and weight of the water and the flowers at the time of the leak. Still that leaky vase has it's uses, maybe it now makes a great water to drip water on a plant!

I find as I get older, I have become more emotional, I thought it would be the opposite way.

Anxiety creeps in when I am not looking. I am trying to make sure that where I put myself back together I use something beautiful. I have heard, not sure it is true, but there are cultures that repair broken things with a gold paste to make it more beautiful in the repair.

You are wonderful, amazing post, thank you. Sometimes it's hard to get out from that cycle, can't see for looking, sometimes we need a guide to help us find the way out of that cycle. I know for it's it's been a hard few months but I will get there, I'm not going to have a break down, although I do break down at times and be in a flood of tears. I'm just to emotional at the best of times.

and there is the crux of it, it's a nasty cycle that can be almost impossible to break free from!

@kevin1877uk it's worse without support, or when life has thrown other stresses at you. speaking of...what fun things have YOU gone out and done this week? I know moving to a new area by yourself is super stressy

@Jessicalynnt,There was a time when fears, apprehensions, doubts and worries used to eclipse me frequently, but now I have learned how to replace them with positive thoughts.

@else34 our minds have ruts in them from the ways we think and feel the most often, those ruts can be hard to get out of!

The three things I tried to do to manage my anxieties are, 1) exercise, 2) keep myself busy, 3) have very "honest" conversations with myself, that typically involves in acknowledging the problem & working for a solution.

@Jessicalynnt It is definitely saved my sanity a few times. I also try to help people if possible, even if it's something simple, like house-sitting for their cats. I find helping people calms me down too.

I think I was more anxious when I was young. Now I know that we must accept whatever there is in for us.

Nice comparison. :) I could tell you better uses. Suppose you buy a mirror and decorate corners of that mirror with parts of broken vase? It can look good too.

I suffer from anxiety and I know how bad it can be. I just hope that nobody gets into zone of this social anxiety and agoraphobia.

@skysnap Sometimes I dont try, heh, some of my coworkers know because they have seen my coping mechanisms, and quietly support them, like ask me to go get them a glass of water to give me an escape, I appreciate those quiet bits of support.

I can't agree more on what you have said. Anxiety will slowly eat you up. I hope you will soon find a magic glue that will bind all the pieces of the vase much more tightly to preserve water without a leak.

I would too, but if that isn't possible, I want to learn to be happy being a leaky water dripping vase and find beauty in my new self

Anxiety is horrible, but made worse when depression is thrown in the mix too. I have my ups and downs too and know it is hard to talk about. Many people, even those close to us, just don't understand. I've never thought of it the way you talked about it, but it seems a very fitting comparison.

or they just get tired of hearing it, or just have too much to carry on their own to carry our burdens too.

Beautifully written. Honest. The part about how you can't talk about it to anyone, is so true! No one else has been in our shoes, and even if we find someone to listen to us rant and even if they try to help, it is of very little comfort. It is horrifying how truly alone we feel at times like those.

people either try to give advise (which is ok, depending on HOW it is given, but often it's not given right), tell you to just get over it (yeah that totally works, why have I never tried that before -grumble sarcastically-), or get tired of listening. It's a rare person who can listen and not blow it off, and most of the time, it's those who also struggle with similar things.

After reading the entire post it confirmed my thinking that you can write this because you have gone through that. Many would be in the category of the broken vase put back but atleast those who are lucky not to have reached that stage hopefully will benefit from this.

the anxiety blinds us and blows problems out of proportion. The tree we think might uproot the house won't but we chop it down from fear and it falls on the house - fear becomes a self-fulfilling prophesy

Wonderful description, a vase glued together with variable leakages. This is how I feel. Some day I am strong and positive, others I feel anxious and depressed.
