Our dining room table has a semi-permanent resident at the moment, a rather large book that just won't fit on any other surface in the house. It is the archives book of my local swimming club and I have it on loan for as long as I need it for my research into the old swimming baths. I can definitely see why the swimming club thought it best I take it home, rather them having to get it in and out of their club room cupboards all the time! It is so heavy I can only just carry it by myself. And so, having been dumped on my table a couple of weeks ago, there it stays. It's actually a valuable and fascinating resource for the work I'm doing. And I guess, that by staring me in the face every day I can't possibly forget what I'm supposed to be doing. The aim is to have it finished and returned before Christmas. So far the going has been slow, and I'm not even half way yet. But, each little session counts. So, now that I've had my coffee break I shall return to the 1921- 1922 swimming season and see what little treasures I may unearth from those years.

Sounds interestings. Swimsuits would be different, covering up the body.

They certainly were different and there was segregation of the sexes in the early days

sounds like the pages need scanned, I hate seeing hard copies of things be the only copies, so many ways for it to get lost!

A lot of it is in the form of newspaper clippings, which are available on microfiche at the library. I suspect that is where much of it came from when they put the archive together for their centenary. At least some of the information will become more readily accessible once my book is published.

@valmnz that is certainly true! Not my type of subject, but I do find myself interested, I think your enjoyment over the subject is catching!

@Jessicalynnt I'm glad about that! Hopefully I can do the same in the next two years with the people on whom I'm relying on to buy the book!

This is the biggest book that I have ever seen. You should take pictures of the pages and then process the pages with an OCR so you can convert the photos into text (or pdf). I know it's a long process, but it should be interesting.

@valmnz This really is a labour of love it seems. It's great that some people took the time to record all that went on.

Definitely a labour of love, but has now enlisted the support of local historians. It helps to have someone to turn to when the going gets tough.

I can't even begin to imagine going through something like that, but it must be great to have the job of writing about it once your research is over.

Yes, writing the story of our local swimming baths, in existence from 1917 - 1966. The book will be released for the centenary of opening day in 2017.

I can see that it's fascinating to find out what they were up to nearly 100 years ago.

It's also fascinating realising that many of the problems connected to public facilities today were similar back then too.

Gosh, this one was written some time ago, how did you find it? The archives book is still sitting on the table, as I'm only up to the 1930s with my research.

This is too precious to be placed on a coffee table, and is indeed almost as big as mine. This has to be handled with kid gloves almost!

@ElizabethWallace it is usually kept locked away at the swimming club. I've been loaned it for my research. The only place in my house big enough for it is the table. It is too heavy to be moved from one place to another.

I can imagine going through the archives would be so time-consuming - coming across fascinating bits and having to read all about the nitty-gritty of years ago.

and oh so many cross references and things to double check, since it contains a lot of information I've already obtained fom the newspaper files.
