How often do you cook?

This evening we went to visit somebody. The lady is down. She cooks twice a day. I cook only once each day rest is warming. I am also fine with leftovers for the following day. But they never use their refrigerator to keep leftovers. Their refrigerator is to keep milk, and curds only. And of course vegetables and fruits. They are vegans like me. So though this question is a bit personal, I would like to know if it is wrong to eat leftovers and if you do not find it objectionable, can you tell me how often in a day you cook. I apologize in advance.

Leftovers. No problems. We have even left overs from the last Saturday in the refrigerator. I think it all depends on how busy you are with other things and how much do you care for serving fresh food. Going by the today's scenario, when people do not mind eating frozen foods that were prepared weeks or even months ago, there is no problem with eating home made food that has piled up in the fridge.

Exactly. What is the guarantee that the restaurant is serving you something fresh? lol. At least you are sure of hygiene at home. Ironically, they take so much pain for health and their health is not up to mark. I feel sorry for aunty because she is having acute leg pains so cooking is becoming tough for her. But at this age letting go of habits is also hard. Right..she is about 13 years older than me. Not having kids is another issue. Who will do for them? It is very difficult to find a maid who cooks even one meal. Old age homes are not likely to follow their patterns. Right? Some habits should not be cultivated.

@vandana7 I feel sad for her - at her age no one to care for her.

I cook three times every day, breakfast, lunch and dinner. There is nothing wrong in eating leftover, but I like to make something different for lunch and dinner.

Actually, I too make breakfast, lunch and some bread for dinner. I meant..cooking curries. I cook two curries and what we call dal (pulses - sort of thick soup) once in a day in about 1 hour or so between 11 am to 12 noon or may be 1 pm. That sort of concludes for the entire day. Evening cooking is confined to making flat bread. They cook two curries in the morning, and whatever is left over is passed on to the maid, and in the evening another curry. I feel sorry for the couple because even if they go to any old age home this habit will have to be discontinued. Adjusting to it in old age will be tough and getting a maid to do that job is not easy either.

@vandana7 Of course almost nobody can afford to have a maid here in Switzerland, they are far too expensive. Even in Italy people had a maid in the fifties, then the Labor Union imposed a minimum salary and nobody (except the very rich) can afford a maid anymore.

@LadyDuck ..labor is still cheap in India. Here we do get maids. But no maid will come twice a day for cooking. That is guaranteed.

I so agree with that. In fact, there are many dishes that taste good when they are used as leftovers. lol

We make full use of the refrigerator. Whatever is left over is frozen and eaten may be next week.

I agree here. A week may be difficult for me to cook for though some of my aunts are used to cooking for a long time and then spending the rest of the time on other activities or even going out of town. But I am fine with leftovers, even a week long. lol. I can't make out the difference. I had a friend coming over to stay with me. She used to cook twice in a day too. I think when they get accustomed to such things, old age becomes tough. It is not laziness that needs to be thought of. It is whether others will be able to do this for me when I am old, and will I manage to adjust at that time, or will I be fighting with others because of my discomfort that needs to be thought of, I think. :) In the past, we did not have refrigerators, so it was understandable. But now, it is silly if you ask me. lol Thank you for making me feel comfortable about one time cooking. :)

@allknowing ..oh we have sumptuous breakfast. Everyday. Sunday and Monday idlis, tuesday and wednesday porridge, thursday and friday brown bread, saturday dosas (green gram). Sometimes, Tuesdays to friday schedule changes. Those days we eat eggs so I try to avoid upma unless necessary. Eggs mean more proteins, right? :)

I cook breakfast then dinner. I eat lunch sometime outside. I do try to cook less to minimise left overs. I get depressed if I have to eat the same thing for 3 meals.

lol. Actually, we are only two. Therefore, quarter kilo of vegetable is insufficient for a day for us - both of us like eating vegetables. We have to buy every vegetable 1/2 kilo. That usually does spread to three meals though whatever is left is not much. But other fresh vegetables and soup the next day increases variety.

We tend to cook once a day but only cook enough for that meal so there is rarely leftovers however if my wife cooks curries she will eat it over two days l don't eat curry! Sometimes if we make a large meal we freeze some for another day. We abhor waste! Breakfast consists of porridge or toast which l do not consider as cooking!

@vandana7 depends on the day. Usually 2x in the morning and late afternoon. If there I any leftovers I just heat them up and do no cooking. Big meals are left for the holidays.
