Getting My 'Fix' of Farm Animals

While we quite liked free camping we stayed at caravan parks every few days. This gave us the chance to charge all the electronic stuff – camera batteries, tablet, laptop, phone. Early in our trip we spent two nights at Parsons Green Caravan Park and Animal Farm in the Galtee Vee valley in south Tipperary. We were surprised at the size of some of the parks. This one had tours arriving through the day, often consisting mainly of school children. I've always been interested in the various sheep breeds so was delighted to find Soay and Jacob sheep here. These are both ancient breeds. The Soay come from the island of Soay in the St Kilda Archipelago some 65 kilometres from the Western Isles of Scotland while the Jacobs often have four or six horns as opposed to the more normal two. There were alpacas, sika deer, goats, alpacas, a llama and donkeys. There was even an emu although this was not easy to view. It is regarded as an exotic animal and to have it on public display requires a special licence and a vet on site. These new requirements are part of the EU rules. Bureaucracy gone mad again. Two piebald Irish cobs pulling governess carts took guests on a tour of the site. A Shetland pony and foal were also on view along with Highland and Dexter cows. So I got my fix of livestock for the week. It was a place I could have happily worked at.

I think the only one to give permission to display an emu, should be the emu.

You're right but emus are curious creatures and like a bit of interaction to brighten up their day.

I was always on the look-out for zoos, wildlife parks or animal farms. And I saw some wild deer including some in Phoenix Park in the middle of Dublin.

That's why many of my fellow Singaporeans love to visit Australia. Life is more peaceful and close to nature. I think it is good to travel to your country, and breathe in some fresh air, and live in a farm for a couple of days.

We have kangaroos on our property and our Singaporean friends loved them.

I really enjoyed your slideshow. I wish there was a place like this near me, I would love to see all of those animals for myself.

I really enjoyed that place. I liked the fact that they were trying to help the ancient breeds survive.

@JudyEv Aren't they aggressive birds? The ones I have seen are.

We used to have a pet emu once. We made sponge cakes from the eggs but made them in a baking dish.

@sofssu Once they lose their fear of humans I guess they appear aggressive. They become very 'in your face', don't they? They like shiny things so would try to pick at watches etc. But if you stood your ground they are very unlikely to attack. Having said that you wouldn't want to pick a fight with one. They have a very strong middle toe which can inflict serious injury.

I enjoy so much to watch animals. I did not know about the EU rules about the emu. This prove that European bureaucracy is becoming ridiculous.

There seems to be a lot of very silly rules. When we were there some years ago they were paying Irish farmers NOT to grow crops so that Eastern European countries could export theirs. Also, to qualify for certain grants, all farm buildings must be painted green to blend in more with the surrounding land. Really stupid rules. I guess it keeps lots of people in work thinking up these crazy things.

@JudyEv This is the most stupid rule in Europe, they also pay Italian farmers not to produce milk because they buy it from Eastern European countries, the problem is that they are paid very little and the imported milk is sold at a high price. I still wonder why we unified Europe.

@LadyDuck It is so stupid. I worry that one day there might be a big upheaval and, for instance, Eastern Europe will stop exporting milk to Italy, Italy has got rid of all its dairy cows and suddenly they can't get any milk. It seems a very dangerous way to go.

I'm glad you enjoyed it. It was great wandering through the walkways between the various paddocks and seeing the animals.

That sounds like a nice place to visit. I don't know much about sheep, but it would be cool to see those that you mentioned.

I grew up on a farm and we raised stud sheep among other things. Ever year there'd be orphan lambs to rear. I now have a pet sheep who is a great character so I have a great interest in sheep - as you'll probably discover if you keep reading my posts!

Four or six horns that is quite unusual and a sight for sore eyes.

I know it's not everyone's cup of tea but I was really excited to see these ancient breeds 'in person' so to speak.

It's been great to relive our trip to a certain extent through writing and going through the photos.
